General Alabama Public School Information

Age requirements: Children who will be 5 years old on or before September 2 are eligible for admission to public kindergarten. Children must be 6 years of age on or before September 2 to attend first grade. Kindergarten classes are provided in all public schools but are not mandatory.

Location: A child’s school is determined by the location of the parent’s or legal guardian’s residence. Students must attend the school in the zone they are assigned with the exception of magnet schools.

Transportation: Busing is used throughout the system for any student who lives more than 2.5 miles from the school they are zoned to attend. For students attending magnet schools, transportation is provided to and from the public school the students would normally be zoned to attend. The students will then be bussed to their neighborhood, depending on residency. There is door-to-door transportation available on specially equipped buses for children with special education needs.

Registration: Parents must present an Alabama Certificate of Immunization, also called a blue card, for their child. This certificate may be obtained from a pediatrician or family doctor. A child’s birth certificate and proof of the parent’s or guardian’s address must also be presented. A social security number is required. If a student is transferring from another school, a transcript, report card or transfer notice must be presented at the time of registration.

After School Care: After school care is provided for a fee at most elementary schools. The program is supervised by the YMCA and is

done on a contract basis with the school system.

Educational Systems Montgomery County Schools Montgomery Public Schools is guided by a students-first philosophy. The mission is to provide safe and caring communities where teachers teach and students learn at higher levels.

The district is comprised of 32,000 students in 54 schools and has a variety of academic programs and services to meet their diverse needs and interests.

MPS offers a full range of curriculum complemented by college preparatory programs, cultural arts, music, foreign languages, technology, career and technical education, and athletics, as well as 10 magnet programs that cover all grade levels and themes ranging from science, performing arts, technology, accelerated academics to international studies.

Seven career academies in the traditional high schools equip students with skills for high-demand careers in advanced manufacturing, health occupations, information technology, culinary arts and hospitality, public safety and business marketing. MPS will also open the new Montgomery Technical Center (MTEC) in late 2012, which will provide high school students with training and certification in

skilled trades like welding, plumbing, HVAC and carpentry.

The district is also constructing the new, state-of-the-art Park Crossing High School in East Montgomery. The $23 million school will house about 1,000 students and is scheduled to open in the fall of 2013.

Throughout the district, there are programs for children with special needs, including two special education centers and services for gifted students. There are also early childhood education programs and a host of supplemental education services.

Autauga County Schools There are 12 public schools in the Autauga County system—six elementary, one middle/junior high, one junior high and two high schools and a technology center. The system also has two K-12 schools. An interesting difference in this county is the housing of the students in the downtown district. The kindergarten students are in their own building, Prattville Kindergarten.

Inherent in the Autauga school system mission is the belief that “schools should be safe, happy places where children look forward to coming each day to celebrate their joy for life and learning, that all children can learn, and that teaching should be adapted to the learning styles of those being taught.”

Elmore County Schools There are 15 public schools in the Elmore County system—seven elementary, three middle schools, four high schools and one technical school. The Elmore County Public School System consists of four school communities; Eclectic, Holtville, Millbrook and Wetumpka. Each community has the grade composition of kindergarten through 12th grade.

The philosophy of this school system is: “Each student is seen as a unique person who possesses certain potential, needs, aspirations, and interests. As each student is different, the purpose of education is to provide appropriate experiences in school, which develop maximum achievement so each individual will become a useful and

School Report Cards Below are the explanations for each of the categories listed for the 2009-2010 school report cards. These numbers are reported each year by the Alabama Department of Education. Enrollment: Determined by the average number of students attending school after Labor Day.

Free/Reduced Price Meals: Percentage of students that applied for and were approved for free or reduced price meals. It is an indicator of poverty.

Highly Qualified Teachers: Percentage of classes taught by a teacher who is highly qualified by the State of Alabama in that class field. This qualification is defined and required by the federal

legislation known as “No Child Left Behind.”

Alabama Reading & MathmaticsTest: Provides an assessment of students’ mastery of the content contained in the Alabama Course of Study. This reading and mathematics test is given in grades three through eight.

#8 BEST MAGNET SCHOOL IN THE NATION Loveless Academic Magnet Program, Booker T. Washington Magnet, Brewbaker Technology Magnet and Carver High School were listed among the best schools in the country by U.S. News and World Report’s 2012 Best High Schools list. Loveless ranked number one in the state, 32 on the list of the nation’s top 500 high schools, and eighth best magnet school in the nation. Brew Tech and BTW were named silver medalists, which is an upgrade from the previous year’s Bronze Medal status. Carver High School was named a Bronze Medal school.

Montgomery’s Magnet Schools Montgomery Public Schools’ magnet programs are highly competitive programs that cover all grade levels with themes including technology, science, performing arts, accelerated academics and international studies. Each year, the number of openings varies from school to school with the most openings available in kindergarten. Transcripts are used to determine eligibility for magnet programs along with interviews and/or auditions depending on the program. Applications and transcript request forms for the magnet programs are available in the winter and spring at the magnet schools and on the MPS website at www.preparingstudentsforlife.com. Applications and transcript forms should be submitted by the deadline indicated on the application.

Only one application should be submitted per year. All students accepted into the magnet programs must be legal residents of the county before the start of school in order to attend. Proof of residency is required before a child may attend classes.

High School Career Academies Montgomery Public Schools High School Career Academies are four-year programs that begin in ninth grade that help students acquire the skills they need to fulfill college or technical school entrance requirements, receive industry certification or immediately move into the workforce after graduation.

Students have the flexibility to explore programs of study in diverse fields such as advanced manufacturing, hospitality and tourism, information technology, health science, education, business and finance, and law and public safety.

These programs combine hands-on technical training with core academic classes and project-based instruction in small learning communities that are designed to reflect the real world environments students will work in.

Academy students also gain practical career experience through externships with local businesses, dual enrollment and other educational opportunities with two and four-year institutions, and by interacting with professionals in the fields they are interested in.
