The cold and flu season has really hit us and several of our students (and staff) have needed time off to recover. Despite this we have 55 students who have a perfect attendance record for Term 2. Congratulations to these students for staying healthy.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents about their obligations regarding attendance at school. Attendance is compulsory and it is the responsibility of parents to ensure children attend on every day that the school is open. There are times however, that due to illness or other reasons children will be unable to attend. Parents need to provide explanations as to why their child was away from school in these circumstances. Unfortunately there were a number of cases (in our local area) referred to legal branch last year for consideration for prosecution because parents were not meeting their obligations under the act.
If your child is late to school or not at school we will send a text message to you as a reminder that you need to explain the absence. This system also works as a safety plan for students – if you think your child is at school and for some reason they haven’t arrived you need to know ASAP. A recent incident in the media has highlighted the importance of both school and parents knowing where children are at all times.
This week we will sadly say goodbye to our trainee speech pathologists from the University of Newcastle. The team has been working, under guidance from their supervisor, to assess the speech needs of most of our Kindergarten students. They have provided a wonderful service to our school and we will certainly miss them. The school would like to wish them all the very best for their future careers.
Our 10-day swim school is also drawing to a close. A big thank you to Mrs Adam, Mr Kuczer, Mrs Smith and Mrs Lishman for all their hard work at the pool. The staff at First Splashes, Toronto have been wonderful in supporting our students and we will miss them all while the pool is closed for renovations.
Please don’t forget that the P&C pie drive orders will be available for collection tomorrow afternoon between 2-3pm from the canteen. There is one order with no name on it.

Our mural artist Lex James has recently had a children’s book published. Because he is currently working with our students doing murals for our school, Lex is offering his book at half price to any student who would like a personally autographed copy. Usually $19.99 the books will be available for $10. If your child is interested in purchasing a copy, please bring your money in an envelope with child’s name and class and see Mrs Cowburn at the office. Lex will be here every day until the end of term.
