Dear Parents, Carers, Students and Community, National Assessment Program- Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) Yesterday and today our Year 3 and 5 students completed three of their NAPLAN tests- Language Conventions, Writing and Reading. Tomorrow they finish up with Numeracy (Thursday). Our students should be congratulated for the mature approach to completing these tests. Parents are reminded that results won’t be received until mid-August at the earliest. Aboriginal education – NAIDOC celebrations NAIDOC Week is held in the first full week of July, which falls in our school holiday period. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. Mount Warrigal Public School is planning our school celebrations and would love to have our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community help lead us in the planning of the day. If you are able to assist in any way, please contact our school office or see your child’s teachers, myself or Mrs Neaves. We look forward to working with you. World of Maths – Next week - 18th (K-Yr 3) and 20th (Yr 4-6) May Next week our students have the opportunity to participate in a fun, hands-on experience that will support and enrich our class Mathematics programs. If you have not yet returned the permission note and money, it’s not too late. We would love to have all our students involved in this fun and engaging learning experience. If you require assistance please contact the office. P&C – AGM Monday 16 th May, 9.30am Firstly, thank you to the P&C for once again supporting our students and their families with the organisation of the Mother’s Day stall and raffle. The work behind the scenes in the lead up and on the day should be recognised and is greatly appreciated. I know our students loved ‘going shopping’ and were excited to be able to spoil their mums on Sunday morning. This coming Monday, the P&C will hold their Annual General Meeting and warmly welcome all parents and community members. The meeting will be held at the school in the community room and will start at 9.30am. School Attendance Reward Students who demonstrate pleasing attendance this term will have the opportunity to participate in a reward at the end of this term. What this reward looks like is yet to be decided but some ideas discussed have been a movie and popcorn in the hall, a free sausage sizzle, additional play time, etc. We really want your child at school every day (unless they are sick of course!) and if they need to be absent a note or doctor’s certificate must be returned within 7 days explaining their absence. Winter School Uniform We began the year with an excellent effort in wearing the correct school uniform each day. Winter uniform for both boys and girls consists of the school tracksuit pants and jacket, or maroon tracksuit, a school polo shirt and appropriate footwear. As usual, uniforms can be purchased from Kym in the canteen. If the weather is extremely cold and you feel your child needs extra protection from the wind, they may wear a parker, beanie, and gloves on their way to school, but will be asked to remove these during class time as our classrooms can be heated if necessary. If it is possible to buy these in school colours, please support by purchasing maroon. A hat must still be worn to play. Communicating with your child’s teacher I would like to encourage all parents to maintain contact with their child’s class teacher. By the end of Term 2, all teachers will report to you via our usual Semester 1 report, but they may also ask you to come for an interview. You may also request an interview with your child’s teacher at any time. Your child’s educational success is a team effort and we must all work together to make this happen. Remember, communication doesn’t just have to be due to a concern. Teachers love good news stories – so if you have one, please pass it on! This year Stewart House will have provided care for NSW public school children for 85 years! This makes Stewart House one of the oldest and most respected charities in Australia. We are participating in the annual Donation Drive. We are selling Key ring torches for $2. The ever popular High Bounce Handballs are already sold out. It is fun and practical. These will be on sale in the middle quad at 8.45 from Friday 6th May. All money raised will go to Stewart House. Ms Ellem (Organiser)

FOOD & GOODS DRIVE CARE PACKAGES

FOR AUSTRALIAN TROOPS LAST WEEK!!!

Supporting Our Defence Personnel Who Are Currently Serving Overseas Our school has begun a new initiative this year. We will be collecting items so we can put together Care Packages for service men and women that are serving overseas. It will give the students an opportunity to put the ANZAC spirit into a meaningful context. This spirit lives on with our current service men and women. The students will be collecting items that these service men and women can use while away from their families for extended periods of time. We are asked to ensure that packages are made up of non-perishable goods. All donated items can be given to the classroom teacher and items will then be sorted, boxed and shipped overseas to our service men and women. Please send in by Friday 13th May 2016 We hope that you will support our service men and women. Ms Maree Ellem

Library News I have sent home notes in regard to overdue books as part of the process of transition to Oliver, our new library system. Please encourage your child to find any overdue books and return them to the school library to receive a special treat. Premier’s Reading Challenge All students in Yr3-6 who have signed up for the PRC should have started their Reading Logs. When you reach five books come to Mrs Marold for your reward. If students are not sure what books are on the challenge list please refer to the PRC website or check the list in the Library. There are books on the PRC bookshelf for participants to choose from. Students in K-2, K-2H, 3-6E and 2-3M are reading their way through the challenge with their teacher. Book Club Orders are due into the canteen (thanks Kym) by Thursday 12th of May. If credit card is your preferred payment method please use LOOP as this a convenient way that Scholastic has devised to make payments and processing of orders easier. Activity groups in the Library The Library is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays at 11.10-11.35 for quiet games and activities. Mrs O’Leary has a fabulous range of wool and Loom bands to craft and create. If children are interested in forming Chess or Checkers, Origami and Lego clubs sign up and join in the fun. THANKYOU Woolworths Earn and Learn Rewards A big thank you to all the parents and carers from Mount Warrigal Public School for collecting so many tokens. Also a great big thank you to Mrs Gray and Mrs Voysey for organising the tokens and sending away for a wonderful variety of equipment to use in our school playground. We have decided to use this equipment in the quiet area garden. As you can see in the photo below, we are currently using some wind sails in the garden beds, some wind chimes in the flower trees and the construction toys are placed onto our new equipment trollies for undercover play. Not all of the equipment is being used at the moment; the rest has been stored and will be put out later in the year. If you get a chance come up and see the new equipment. Once again a big THANK YOU from all the boys and girls at Mount Warrigal. Gail O’Leary.
