Dewey Public School Teachers of the

Year !!!

I would like to congratulate our 2014-

2015 Teachers of the Year for Dewey

Public Schools. Kendra Sloan is the

Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Debbie Miller is the Middle School

Teacher of the Year; and Josh Stowe is

our High School Teacher of the Year.

Congratulations to these teachers for

being recognized by their colleagues as

outstanding in their profession. A

committee will select a District Teach-

er of the Year in April.

All of our teachers are very dedicated

to the success of each student that

comes into their classroom. If you

have a chance, please let our teachers

know that you appreciate their hard

work and that they are not taken for

granted.

Construction Update

As of now, all of our construction

projects are substantially complete.

The work at the high school and

middle school was completed in

time for school to begin on time

this school year. The work at the

elementary followed closely behind

the MS/HS and was wrapped up by

Christmas break. We then shifted

our attention to the work at the ag

farm and the baseball/softball hitting

facility. Work began slowly on both of

those projects, but after a while we were

able to see progress. By early March,

we were able to put both facilities to

use. There are still a few details to

finish on the hitting facility and the ag

barn and will get those taken care of as

soon as possible. Our goal is to turn a

portion of the old practice field into

student parking during the summer.

This will allow us to move the parking

off of Bulldogger Rd. to open up the

front of the buildings and to mitigate

the risk of student injuries from cross-

ing the road to the cafeteria. Once

again, we want to say thank you for all

the community support that allowed us

the opportunity to enhance our school

campus facilities.

Superintendent’s Spring Message

Testing, Testing, one, two, three, Testing Beginning again in April, stu-

dents in grades 3-8 will take the

annual required state academic

exams. Students in 9-12th will

take End of Instruction Exams

in (7) different subject areas.

Building test schedules will be

posted on the school website

for reference.

Recent proposed legislation

at the state level appears to be

bringing about some changes in

the A-F grading system and

state testing. The A-F grading

system continues to receive

increased scrutiny about it’s

ability to truly provide valid re-

sults for it’s intent. And it ap-

pears that there could be big

changes in the testing format

that is currently being used in

our schools as well.

So as these changes develop

and ongoing discussions about

curriculum standards on which

student assessments are

based, we continue to be com-

mitted to working together to

help students perform well. It

is important that our students

have been properly prepared

by teachers with the infor-

mation they need and the

students give their best effort

on the exams.

Parents should receive an

information booklet describing

the test and even some sam-

ples test questions. Teachers

will review the booklets in

class before sending them

home. We encourage parents

to also review and discuss this

information with their students

for test preparation.

There are few routines as important as a

good night’s sleep. Studies have shown

that 70 million Americans are sleep-

deprived contributing to increased acci-

dents, worsening health and yes, lower

test scores. Sleep has a powerful impact

on children's mood, stress level and over-

all cognitive and emotional functioning.

But often unappreciated is the crucial role

of sleep in the learning process or “the

brain encoding semantic information into

long-term memory” In short, getting the

right amount of sleep makes you smarter.

Generally children ages 5-12 require

10 hours and adolescents 8-9 hours.

Building this kind of routine in today’s

busy world takes work so for ideas on

helping your kids build good sleep rou-

tines got to www.sleepforkids.org or

www.sleepfoundation.org. April is an

important month for student assess-

ment and a good time to apply this re-

search. Want to improve your students

test scores? Adequate rest prior to the

testing period sure would help. So,

nighty night and sleep tight.

Immunization Requirements: As of the 2011-2012 school year, all students in grades 7—10 are required to pre-

sent a record of having received one dose of Tdap vaccine. Tdap is a combination vaccine that provides a boost-

er dose of pertussis (whooping cough) along with the tetanus and diphtheria (Td). Tdap vaccine is routinely rec-

ommended for all children at age 11-12 years of age. This requirement is one of the best means we have to re-

duce the rate of pertussis incident in Oklahoma. Details distributed by MS office or school nurse.

Any balances left in your student’s account at the

end of the year will be carried over to next year. If

you know you are moving during the summer and

wish a refund of any amount over $3, please call

534-0933 x 204 to notify Brenda Shreffler. The

refund will be mailed following the next school

board meeting.

FYI: Free or Reduced meal benefits

from THIS school year will continue on for 30

school days into NEXT year. Applications

will need to be received and approved before

the 30 days expire.

Parents: Starting Monday, May 4th,

CHARGES not allowed in the cafeteria.

Your student will need to have an ade-

quate balance in their pre-paid meal ac-

count if eating either meal.

Now available: Online Payments for

meal accounts at www.EZSchoolPay.com You can easily set up an account to view bal-

ance and or to make a deposit simply with

your student’s ID number. See the School

Web Site for more cafeteria news.

Middle School students participated in

the St. Jude’s Math-a-thon again this year.

The money raised will help kids all over

the world who have cancer, AIDS, or other

catastrophic diseases. St. Jude’s covers

the cost of medical treatments that fami-

lies cannot afford. This effort combined

with the Angel Tree project and Pennies

for Patients resulted in almost $3,100

from Middle School students. Students

and teachers also participated in Bowl for

Kids Sake which is a fundraiser for Big

Brothers and Sisters.

The Dewey Middle School Parent Support

Group has been active supporting the MS

teachers with a monthly luncheon. The

group is sponsoring an end of the year

dance for all DMS students and we are

inviting the 5th graders to get acquainted

with the MS. The event is planned for

Saturday, May 2 in the HS student center.

Time is 6-8 pm. Only Dewey students may

attend. Mrs. Moreland would like to give a

great big THANK YOU to Shannon Crabbe

and all the MS parents that helped with

the support group. The support group is

offering mini grants to help with extras in

the classroom.

site that you have a child attending.

School Notices

Water. Water

helps flush our sys-

tems of waste prod-

ucts and toxins, yet many people go through life

dehydrated—causing tiredness, low energy, and

headaches. It’s common to mistake thirst for hun-

ger, so staying well hydrated will also help you

make healthier food choices.

Exercise. Find something active that you like

to do and add it to your day, just like you would

add healthy greens, or fruit. The benefits of life-

long exercise are abundant and regular exercise

may even motivate you to make healthy food

choices a habit.

BRAIN POWER: Only 2-3% of the body

mass is the brain..........but the brain consumes

30% of body energy consumed.

Since the brain works 24/7 it needs consistent

good foods. Foods that are Full of simple carbo-

hydrates (lot of fast foods, processed foods) give

a quick surge/feast........but then it's famine.

Complex carbohydrates are more of a time-

release food and sustain the brain's needs over

longer periods of time. Fatigue, trouble concen-

trating are examples of poor brain food choices.

PROFICIENCY EXAMS will be offered again

after school on May 18th. Prior registration is

required. Please refer to Student Handbook page

9 for information or check in a building office for

registration forms or any questions.

ACT TESTING is set for Apr il 18th or June

13th. These are held at either TCT or

Bartlesville, see Mr. Golden for how to process a

registration or with any questions. Other re-

sources for information are the School Web Site

or www.actstudent.org for all testing details. In

order for students to qualify for concurrent en-

rollment consideration they must have an ACT

score.
