1 When people going to the historic village from the west they are directed to a roundabout way to get three. Just add a connection from the path to the crossing road.

2 The Sunday Farmer’s Market is the most bike‐friendly day of the week. The City’s many bike racks are encouraging even more and more people choose to come on bike or on foot. Great job!

3 Crosswalk at Periwinkle and St Michael’s Church is noncompliant (with MUTCD) (both sides). Either the “stop” markings on the path need to be removed or regulation mini‐stop signs should be installed.

4 Difficult for bikers crossing at crosswalk to see bikers coming from either direction on the path. Perhaps a traffic mirror would work.

5 In front of St Michaels church the sudden zig and zag to keep on bike path (going east west on north side of Periwinkle) should be straightened. Motorists are never certain what cyclists are doing here and causes possible bad reactions by motorists.

7 I really like the crosswalk at community house! When I ride at night it has some light and traffic is coming from just two directions unlike at the intersection at Periwinkle and Tarpon Bay. Also, the marker in the middle of the road alerts drivers.

8 Island Cow should put stop sign and lines on their driveway to prevent cars from always just running out onto bike path. Very busy location and cars aren’t looking for bikes – Island Cow should take responsibility of hazard they are making here.

10 The quick “jog” that the path takes at the intersection of Periwinkle and Meridian is of concern. I’ve witnessed many near‐accidents here with folks cycling different directions on the path and not being ready for the quick change in course.

11 Agree with the problem of visibility., I live off Meridian and is very difficult for cars and bicycles to see each other, poor quality road apron also along with needing straightening.

12 Parking lot (Periwinkle Place western entrance) ingress‐egress point can be dangerous. Cars stop on bike path and don’t watch for bikes, Require Place to make this intersection safer with their own parking lot stop and look for cyclists sign and stop line.

15 Periwinkle Way has the most intense Shared Use Path traffic on the island. Looking to the future, it would ease path congestion if a parallel path could be placed on the north side of Periwinkle. I believe this is a long term objective of the City

16 Dangerous parking lot (Tahitian Gardens western entrance) ingress‐egress point. No visibility for bikes or cars – cars don’t stop, Bikes can’t see cars from parking lot. Must require Tahitian Gardens to make this intersection safer with their own parking lot.

17 In order for vehicles to exit Purdy Drive, it is necessary to pull up onto or beyond the path. Periwinkle is not visible to the motorist if vehicle is behind the path. Perhaps vegetation can be removed to ensure visibility of both path users

18 There are many markers along the path that are part of the new Heritage Trail, which is a wonderful addition to the path experience. However, many path users don’t know what the mounted signs are and don’t stop to learn about Sanibel.

19 Perhaps the path could be moved back from Periwinkle just like they did at Donax.

30 I like that the path has been marked to remind bikers to “warn when passing” however the locations should be given more consideration. The four way at Periwinkle and Lindgren can be a busy area, some portions of the path are narrower than others and visibility is limited in some directions…

Sanibel Shared Use Path Master Plan Vision

Sanibel’s Shared Use Path system is and will continue to be an invaluable resource, one of the “crown jewels” of the island. Sanibel’s Shared Use Path system will serve as a means for residents and visitors to move about the island safely and easily under human power, reducing the need for using motorized vehicles on City streets and roads. The Path system will be designed and maintained in a manner that provides maximum access to frequently visited island destinations and is

attractive and consistent with Sanibel’s unique character as a barrier island sanctuary and small town community.

Goals and ObjectivesGoal: The safety of Sanibel’s Shared Use Path system and its users shall be of the highest priority.Objectives:• Design the Path system’s physical structure and signage to meet up‐to‐date standards so that Path users are safe and feel

• Improve daytime and evening bicycle, pedestrian, and motorist visibility along the Path system, particularly at intersections and commercial and residential driveways.

• Enforce City ordinances and State statutes to maximize Path safety and minimize crashes.

Shared Use Path Best Practice Design Considerations

Path widths are dependent on context, volume, mix of users, environmental impacts and available right‐of‐way. Generally the recommended width for bi‐directional shared‐use paths is 10–14 feet; a minimum width of 8 feet is appropriate in physical and environmentally constrained conditions. Because of right‐of‐way constraints and the Sanibel Plan’s focus on preservation of the barrier island as a sanctuary, the paths in Sanibel are generally narrower than typical shared use paths. This requires path users to be more vigilant and courteous to ensure that the path system remains safe and enjoyable, especially during peak times of year.

Path Width

Plant materials placed along the paths should be selected to take into consideration the need for excessive pruning, cleanup of fallen debris, and other maintenance. Trees and shrubs with aggressive root systems should either be avoided or root barriers should be provided. Consistent with the Sanibel Plan, new paths or widening to existing paths should avoid impacts to existing natural vegetation.

Vegetation and Landscaping

Consistent with Sate law, bicycles operated at night should be equipped with a headlight that is strong enough to allow for safe navigation and a taillight to make them visible to motorists and other Path users. Path lighting to enhance safety, may be considered at motor‐vehicle conflict points such as intersections or crosswalks, or where abrupt changes to the Path’s geometry may require additional visibility. Lighting along the Path and that crossings should be designed according to all applicable environmental, dark sky, energy conservation, or other local lighting standards, with consideration toward maximizing path user safety while minimizing glare and obtrusiveness to surrounding neighborhoods and wildlife.

Lighting

New pathways and reconstruction or widening of existing paths should be constructed, to the extent reasonable, in accord with the American Disabilities Act (ADA) and corresponding Public Rights‐of‐Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG). In addition to path surface recommendations, this generally means maintaining no more than 5% slope along the path and no more than a 2% slope across the path.

Accessibility

Sign and pathway pavement marking designs should be consistent throughout the path system, be in accordance with local ordinances, and should comply with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The Sanibel Plan places an emphasis on maintaining the natural character of the island and avoiding sign clutter. Accordingly, signs should be limited to required traffic control signs and key wayfinding needs. Pavement markings may be used to convey secondary information including messaging related to courteous trail behavior and supplemental wayfinding.

Signage and Pathway Markings

Provide adequate horizontal and vertical clearances. When possible, maintain a minimum 2‐foot, preferred 4‐foot, clear area adjacent to both sides of the path and a minimum 8‐foot vertical clearance. When horizontal clearances cannot be maintained because of natural vegetation, consideration should be given to warning trail users with pavement markings and/or signs to slow and exercise extra caution.

To the extent possible and consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act, paths should be paved or constructed of hard‐surfaced materials and should provide a firm, stable, and slip‐resistant surface. Pervious materials that meet these criteria may be considered to reduce path impact on natural drainage.

Palm Ridge RoadProject involves roadway, shared use path, access and landscaping improvements. The purpose of the project is to improve roadway aesthetics and shared use path safety.
