Functional SkillsFunctional Skills Numeracy & ICTNumeracy & ICT
CELTA / PTLLS
Today we will… identify issues relating to the functional
skills of ICT and numeracy for ESOL learners
• describe & evaluate some ways in which teachers can support learners’ numeracy & IT skills in an ESOL/EFL classroom
• evaluate a range of ways of to embed elements of functional skills in ESOL/EFL
What do we mean by…
Functional Skills• Practical skills in English, Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) and Mathematics.
Key Skills• Communication, Application of Number,
ICT, Working with others, Improving own learning & performance, Problem Solving
What do we mean by…
Basic Skills• Literacy, Numeracy, LanguageSkills for Life• The national government strategy for
improving basic skills
What do we mean by …
• ICT
• ILT
• IT
To what extent do you agree?
“In today’s society, we believe it is … important that everybody can use ICT. So we shall offer basic ICT skills as a third area of adult basic skills alongside literacy and numeracy within our Skills for Life programme.”
21st Century Skills: Realising Our Potential DfES, July 2003
What is the relevance of this quote to us as language teachers?
Not only can the use of ICT motivate learners and support the delivery of the curriculum but also … ICT skills can be furthered. The ICT Core Curriculum on embedding ICT in other subject areas (www.ict4sfl.org.uk)
What is Numeracy? • the ability to:
– understand and use mathematical information
– calculate and manipulate mathematical information
– interpret results and communicate mathematical information.
Numeracy – the Core Curriculum
Number numbers and the number system and calculations.
Measures, Shape and Space
common measures of money, time, temperature, distance, length, weight, capacity, perimeter, area and volume, and shape and position.
Handling Data data and statistical measures, and probability.
From the Adult Numeracy Core Curriculum
Everyday ICT & numeracyHow do we use:
•ICT•Numeracy
Four groups: – 1 x ICT on the etherpad– 1 x ICT on A3 paper– 1 x numeracy on the
etherpad– 1 x numeracy on A3
paper
Assessing Materials
• What assumptions does the teacher have in setting these tasks?
• What numeracy or ICT problems would a learner have with these language learning materials?
• What can we do to help them?
The Assignment
• Reflect on your strengths & weaknesses in IT & numeracy (p.4)
• Briefly describe & evaluate ways in which teachers can support numeracy & IT skills in the context of their language learning (p.2) 300 - 500 words
The End!
Can you think of…
• The difference between ICT & ILT?• A problem an ESOL learner might
have with numeracy?• A way of incorporating numeracy into
an ESOL class?• A way of developing IT skills in an
ESOL class?
ICT in every day life• Your ideas…
• cash machine• mobile phones• radio or CD player• mp3 player• chip and pin card• PC & Internet for
leisure• PC & Internet for
work
Numeracy in every day life• checking receipts• paying for things• reading a fuel gauge
or speedometer• measuring ingredients• calculating the length
of a bus journey• using & recording
phone numbers• topping up pay-as-
you-go mobiles
