Community Newspaper Group

The achievements of schools and their staff and students are a vital component of our news coverage at Community Newspaper Group. Our reporters are always looking for positive stories about their local community and rarely an edition is printed without such a story involving a school. We are committed to shining the spotlight on moments of success and sustained achievement at schools. The successes we write about show how integral teachers are to the community. After all, our coverage wouldn't be possible without "good" people and achievements at schools to write about. Our reporters are proud when it is "one of their teachers" or a student from "one of their schools" that they are writing about. And we know that among our readers are many past or present students, or parents of students, who share our enthusiasm and delight for all that can be shared as good news about schools, teachers and parents.

2012 Samantha Maiden

National Political Editor

In August 2012, Samantha Maiden’s coverage of the Gonski report expressed concerns for how the proposed changes could occur using the new model of funding. Maiden has been following the cash bucket in relation to education for some time, and the issues raised are as yet not resolved, but the public awareness of the issue needs to be held firmly in the spotlight, and able to be scrutinised. Maiden will do that. Samantha Maiden is listed on the Internet as a National Political Editor for the Sunday Telegraph, Sunday Herald Sun, Sunday Mail and Sunday Times (Perth). At the time of going to press ourselves (PTCWA Awards Committee), contact has not been made with Maiden, but her presence on the Internet is significant, with 13,627 followers on her Twitter page.

PTCWA acknowledges coverage by the media on items of high interest to the public in relation to their children’s education, and in particular what is happening in schools and with educators. And for 2012, the PTCWA Media Award goes to Samantha Maiden.

Mr Roland Penno (DATTA WA) - Design and Technology Teachers Association of WA

On behalf of DATTA WA I would like to nominate Roland Penno for the 2011 Outstanding Professional Service Awards. Roland has been essential in maintaining, developing and growing our professional association. DATTA WA over the last few years has been short staffed in many roles and this has led to the point where it could have easily been disbanded. Luckily through the efforts of a few dedicated and long serving active members, DATTA WA has developed to better address members in our rapid technological world. Roland has been instrumental in this process of change to serve the members better. He has been an executive member for many years, holding numerous positions such as Treasurer, Secretary, DATTA Australia Representative, PTC liaison officer and editor of our E-Journal. Roland is one such person who has devoted himself to DATTA WA, and steered DAATA WA towards the future through his recommendations at meetings and dedicated effort. I know at times it has been at a great personal cost. Roland has been the key orchestrator for implementing several system level changes and initiatives in DATTA that has strengthened a volunteer based association to become a more sustainable and self-supporting professional association.

Over the last several years as treasurer he has sorted and restructured the financial records and accountability for auditing by managing the books electronically and implementing the recommendations of an auditor. We now currently employ two staff on contract payments to follow up and process finances and receipting etc, and are now in the position to be able to provide the opportunity to employ an association officer with duties of managing the day to day running of DATTA WA. His outstanding daily effort and attention to a standard process with the financial management has allowed DATTA to position themselves in this manner.

He has also streamlined the payments and receipting processes online, he has setup DATTA WA debit cards for several executives as well as establishing and understanding and training for members of the executive to follow set purchasing and recording processes. Through his resourcefulness and liaisons with the outgoing president he has developed job roles and trained employees on contract payments to perform duties of DATTA WA. This year he has been acting treasurer as well as secretary due to the position being vacant, fulfilling two positions for DATTA WA. As always, he ensures all liaisons and communications are distributed to the executives and all members.

As an active member he researches, informs members and submits proposals. Recently he has co-ordinated the issuing of smart phones to the executives to reduce the workload and improve the response time of pending issues. Meetings and conference calls are now often completed over the phone, saving both time and money for the executive.

This year Roland dedicated many hours toward our annual conference. He managed the setting up, running and management of registration and payments for our annual conference.

This event ran smoothly and was recognised and praised by the members as being a huge success. The registration and payment for this event was all conducted online with Register Now. Roland has now taken this initiative and rolled it out to all professional development being offered by DAATA WA making the workload for all involved including attendees (members) easier.

Mrs Jan Mitchell (STAWA) - Science Teachers Association of Western Australia Chair- S-KIDS Committee 2005 – 2011 (Science for Kids Day)

Jan Mitchell has been involved in the S-KIDS (Science for Kids Day) since its inception in 2005. Initially this was in the position as an S-KIDS committee member and in more recent years she acted as the chair of the committee. S-KIDS Day is held at Edith Cowan University’s Mount Lawley Campus as a yearly event each October school holidays, and is an ongoing partnership with Scitech and STAWA. In 2011 over 160 primary school children participated in four different engaging hands-on science workshops over the course of the day.

S-KIDS Day aims to motivate primary children and parents regarding the importance of scientific literacy within the community, as well as providing a forum for engaging primary children in science. The day is supported by voluntary Primary and Secondary Science teachers as presenters and guest presenters, along with voluntary pre-service teachers who escort and engage the children around their workshops.

On behalf of the STAWA Primary Science Committee we would like to nominate Jan Mitchell for her outstanding service, significant contribution, leadership, and her long-standing and valuable support during the last seven years helping to ensure the success of S-KIDS Day.

It has been extremely satisfying to reflect on the positive impact S-KIDS Day has had on the teaching, learning and promotion of science. Over the last seven years approximately 1200 children have attended being supported by more than 200 pre-service teachers, along with practicing teachers, lecturers and community volunteers from various organisations who have participated or contributed on the day. The success of S-KIDS Day has been due to the outstanding organisation of the program that was coordinated by Jan Mitchell.

Ms Eve Ruddock (WAIER) - Western Australian Institute for Educational Research

Eve joined the Executive Committee of the WA Institute for Educational Research in 2003. She took on the role of ‘Research Seminars co-ordinator for 7 years from 2004 until she resigned from the Committee in 2010. This was a difficult role that Eve says she enjoyed doing. Eve used her personable talents to encourage researchers to make themselves available to present at these Seminars. At times, Eve was managing the Seminars with minimal assistance for the Committee, but she always had a positive, unassuming attitude. She was a reliable, loyal contributor to the Committee and was never reluctant to take on tasks at the Research Forum, no matter how menial they may be.

The calibre of the lady is reflected in her own words “It has been an honour to work with this inclusive organization where the emphasis is firmly placed on encouraging research in Education. I particularly value the support WAIER offers novice educational researchers. It is in this vein that I fondly recall my first presentation where, with the support of the chair (a member of the WAIER committee), a potentially ominous occasion became instead a useful and happy experience. After that, it was a pleasure for me to be able to help other novice presenters as they faced their first public delivery of their research work.

I continue to value the friendships formed as part of the WAIER membership and appreciate the generous contributions of the Seminar Presenters who were willing to share their expertise with us and the wider community.”

Ms Tehani Wessley - WASLA Publications Editor (WASLA) - Western Australian School Library Association

Tehani has made an outstanding contribution to WASLA in her role as Publications Editor, working tirelessly for school libraries in Western Australia and literature across Australia. In 2011 Tehani has promoted literacy and children’s and young adult literature as a judge for the Children’s Book Council Awards and the Aurealis Awards which are national awards for Australian literature. She is also currently a judge for the West Australian Premier’s Book Awards. Tehani is also an accomplished publisher and editor of children’s and young adult fiction.

During a period of major change and rejuvenation for WASLA, Tehani has been a committed committee member who has participated in the development and delivery of major professional development sessions for Library Officers, Teachers and Teacher Librarians. She has also been responsible for the development and publication of WASLA’s first refereed professional journal, ic3. This commitment has placed WASLA firmly into the academic area of publishing, while presenting a fresh approach to the dissemination of theory and practice in Teacher Librarianship. The journal also caters for school libraries which do not have professional Teacher Librarians on staff, by providing support and information for Resource Teachers, Library Technicians and Library Officers. Ic3 has been a major undertaking for WASLA in 2011 and would not have been possible without Tehani’s expertise, extensive knowledge of the publishing industry and dedication to the Association.

Tehani’s contribution to WASLA and schools ensures that Western Australian school libraries and their staff have support and a public voice which will enhance and advocate for the profession. Her efforts are greatly appreciated by the Committee as Tehani makes positive contributions locally, nationally and globally to Teacher Librarianship and Education.

The WASLA Committee proudly endorses this Award, and thanks Tehani for her work over the previous two years.

Mr Gary Adamson (ArtED) - Art Education Association of Western Australia

Gary has been a member of the Art Education Association for the past twenty five years, joining in 1987. Over this time there have been many departmental changes and Gary has been privileged to be a part of both of these and in some ways instrumental as an association member and classroom teacher.

In the early years of the association, when meetings were at then WAIT, now Curtin University, a small group of dedicated Art teachers, primary, secondary and tertiary met to help strengthen the bonds of Visual Art across the education system. Gary became a part of this group and in 1987 when he was employed by the “Education Department of WA” as a primary advisor for the state. He has been committed to work between both primary and secondary cohorts as a means to develop and implement Visual Art PP-12.

In the mid-eighties, as Primary advisor for the Education Department, Gary was instrumental in setting up the publication of “Arts Alive” as a departmental journal. This helped to create a vital link with primary teachers and help formulate greater collaboration amongst each other, creating a document that would thrive and build ongoing professional relationships with both Art educators and primary generalist classroom teachers, across the state, over the next decade.

As the Education Department went through change, to the Ministry of Education, “Arts Alive”, as a journal, was discontinued and took on a new look, “Arts Still Alive”. Gary’s involvement with the Art Education Association has been appreciated and members have enjoyed working with him. Gary believes he has been rewarded working with the Association members whose energy and sheer will to promote Visual Art across the state, has been so fulfilling for all involved.

Taking on various roles within the association, as convenor of the primary subcommittee, vice president, various executive positions and committee portfolios over the years has allowed Gary to work closely with a very positive and passionate group of educators, to help build a solid membership of educators across the Art Education Association of Western Australia. Gary has had the opportunity to work with many teachers over the years and in so many different capacities through his various roles; as a teacher within the department and representing his colleagues through his long involvement with Art Ed. WA.

These opportunities have ensured a very rewarding experience and the Art Education Association of Western Australia is very proud to nominate Gary for this Award for his services over the many years.

Ms Lynda Cumming (ALEA) - Australian Literacy Educators’ Association

Lynda was a primary school teacher who taught in a number of country schools before heading to Perth in the mid 1980’s and later becoming a First Steps Collaborative teacher. In 1994 Lynda taught at Attadale P.S. eventually becoming the Teacher Librarian there for many years. It was at this time that Lynda joined ALEA as a committee member. Lynda volunteered for many activities whilst on the committee from delivering books for babies, always being available to assist at mail outs, to organising end of year dinners and workshops. She was a highly organised member who gave many hours to ensuring that events ran smoothly and efficiently.

Lynda was the Conference secretary for a number of ALEA State conferences through the 1990’s and due to her amazing skills and organisation, together with the Treasurer, made substantial profits for ALEA members.

Lynda was a co-conference secretary for our National Conference together with AATE in 2002. This was an enormous undertaking and Lynda was the epitome of efficiency in ensuring that this event, in particular registrations, with over 600 delegates, ran smoothly.

Lynda organised our “Writers’ Picnic” for a number of years. This entailed searching for an appropriate venue, securing the services of a number of local authors and contacting up to 30 or more schools in a district. Venues such as the Museum of WA, the Maritime Museum and The Perth Zoo were wonderful settings for students to use their imaginations and write some amazing stories and poems. Lynda then organised the editing and publishing of the students work to produce a booklet for students and schools to share. It took an amazing amount of organisation and time and it was well received by all concerned.

Due to her work commitments with “STEPS PD” Lynda had to curtail her involvement on the committee of ALEA but she continues to be a great supporter of the organisation and we congratulate her on this well-deserved award.
