Psytrance - Acid…..Man This tutorial shows you how to create a psytrance acid type sound and melody.

Step 1 Open Dune (or any synth with similar parameters) and select the init patch (1).

Step 2 We are using the init patch default settings.(OSC 1 to SAW). Drop the semi tones down by 12 (1 octave) to make the sound deeper (1). Also adjust the filter by dropping it somewhat and increase the resonance for that acid sound. (2+3).

Step 3

Here we start to adjust the filter and the associated envelopes to shape the sound. Adjust the env amount (1) to about 30% - This setting sets up how much the filter envelope will affect the Filter. (filter section) Now adjust the Filter envelope to taste (2) - When you adjust these settings you will hear the effect straight away, this is why we turned up the ENV amount previously. Also Adjust the Amp Envelope to taste.(3) - Try not to use too much Release here as we want the sound to be short and snappy.

Step 4 Here we add some more voices, do a little bit of detuning and add some stereo spread to give the sound some width, body and depth (1).

Step 5 Click on the tab that says "EFFECTS" at the bottom LEFT corner of Dune. Now we adjust the effects to give the sound its final, gritty character, starting with the Distortion effect (1). We also want the sound to have some deeper, expressive movement, to achieve this we use the Phaser/Chorus effect (2). Finally we give the sound even more depth and dimension plus a final amount of liveliness. The depth is achieved by the Reverb and the "liveliness" is added by using the delay effect (3 and 4).

Step 6 Now it’s time to write that killer pattern for your new acid sound. I have created a quick example for you to follow if you wish.

Step 7 The final touch is to add some filter cut-off automation to give the sound some character. Here i have shown this as it’s accomplished in Cubase, you will need to find your own DAW's automation processes to achieve this if you are not using Cubase. It will be in the manual under automation.
