Ophelia, in Shakespeare's Hamlet "The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind." William James Most of society’s challenging problems—including crime, poverty, prejudice, violence, and environmental sustainability— are related to human attitudes, values, and behavior. Psychology informs our understanding of these problems and their solutions. Defined as the scientific study of the mind and behavior, Cadets in this course will gain an understanding of the complexities and diversity of human thought and behavior - skills that can be applied to their own lives, and those around them. II. Textbook No actual textbook will be used for this course, but the structure comes from the American Psychological Association’s (APA) National Standards, which can be found at http://www.apa.org/education/k12/national- standards.aspx HOWEVER, Using the Course Calendar and Resources on CANVAS is greatly beneficial and useful for success in this course. All powerpoints, assignments, due dates, and schedules are found there. In addition, you can ask questions, start discussions, and go “beyond” the classroom. III. Cadet Materials Cadets will need the following materials for class: #2 pencils or ball-point pens (please no fountain pens or those likely to leak) Folder or Binder to keep graded assignments, homework, etc. in OPTIONAL colored pencils, crayons, or markers for assignments – I love to give extra credit for going “above and beyond” with assignments, making them more presentable, or being creative. Each Cadet will be ISSUED a notebook (which will remain in the Classroom) for the purpose of answering daily journal questions and taking notes. This should NEVER leave the Classroom without CPT Curtis’ permission. (If a notebook is filled, another will be issued) IV. I. Course Description "We know what we are, but not what we might be."

William James Most of society’s challenging problems—including crime, poverty, prejudice, violence, and environmental sustainability— are related to human attitudes, values, and behavior. Psychology informs our understanding of these problems and their solutions. Defined as the scientific study of the mind and behavior, Cadets in this course will gain an understanding of the complexities and diversity of human thought and behavior - skills that can be applied to their own lives, and those around them.

II. VI. Absences and Make-Up Policy

Any assignment that is not turned in on the due date will be recorded as a zero. This grade will become permanent one week before the end of the quarter if not turned in. Late assignments are welcomed until the last week before a quarter ends, but after an assignment is more than a week late, your citizenship grade will be docked.

After a school-excused absence, Cadets will have the number of days absent +1 in order to make up the assignment.

ASSIGNMENTS (with the exception of quizzes and tests) can be found at the class website, which can be

accessed at ltcurtis.wordpress.com VII/VIII. Attendance and Tardiness

Cadets are expected to be standing in formation, ready to enter the classroom on time. If a Cadet absolutely MUST be late, whether it be restroom or other reason, they are expected to check in with their Element Leader, or Class Leader (so as NOT to be marked tardy or absent). Any lateness that does not follow this protocol will result in a tardy, if less than 10 min. or an absences after 10 min. (SEE school policy)

IX. Rules and Consequences Class Rules

All UMA rules concerning conduct, dress, and academic integrity apply in and out of the classroom. *See the handbook for the specific rules.

Come to class prepared. No going to your lockers. There will be a place in the classroom you will keep your assigned notebook. Study Guides will be provided for tests so as not to necessitate the notebook leaving class. If you must take it home for any reason, don’t forget to bring it back!

Cadets have the RIGHT to learn. Instructors have the RIGHT to teach. Anything that impedes another person’s ability to learn or mine to teach will result in discipline.

I believe in a policy of mutual RESPECT. I will respect you and ask you to respect me. This should carry over to language, following directions, and honesty.

Consequences Below is a list of possible consequences. This list is not exclusive, and is not necessarily in order.

Referral to an administrator

Loss of Citizenship Grade

X. Computer Usage Cadets must adhere to and follow UMA’s policies and guidelines for computer use. During this semester there will be several times Cadets will use computers to create presentations, research, or to complete other tasks. This use will be monitored and any misuse will be dealt with accordingly. XII. Honor Code Cadets are expected to do their own work. Any cheating will be cause for a loss of points on that assignment or test and referral to administration, as well as notification of parents. Plagiarism will be discussed in greater lengths during the term and as much care should be taken to give credit for another person’s work and ideas. XIII. Syllabus Acknowledgement and Information sheet The last sheet is a form that must be returned completed and signed by parent / guardians and the Cadet, and returned by the next class period. XIV. Parent Communication Every week there will be a class email sent to Parents and Cadets summarizing what was done in class that week, and upcoming assignments and topics. It is VITAL that the emails given to the office are correct, and up-to-date.
