Housing: Any dwelling that provides shelter

Needs: Basic requirements people must have in order to live

Psychologist Abraham Maslow prioritized human needs

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

As each need is met,you progress up the pyramid to the next level of needs

Other Needs Met Through Housing

Beauty: Everyone’s concept of beauty is unique. Beautiful surrounds make people content and relaxed.

Self-expression: Showing your personality and taste. For example, a bold person selects bold colors in their home

Creativity: the ability to combine two or more ideas/items and make something that is uniquely yours

Status: Big house, lots of money, location; builder of home; outside materials

Household = A group of people sharing the same dwelling

Nuclear Family : Couples and their born or adopted children

Single parent family: One parent and child(ren) Step family: One or both parents were married

before with a child(ren) from the previous marriage

Childless family: Couple and no children Single person household: smallest type Extended family:

Several generations (grandparents) Same generation (cousins)

Life Cycle

A series of stages that people pass through in their lifetime

In each stage there are new challenges, needs, and priorities

Beginning

1. Early in marriage with no children

Childbearing

2. Family is growing with children up to age 6

Parenting

3. Family has school-age children age 6-18

Launching

4. Children are now adults and leave their parents home for college, job, marriage

Midyears

5. The years between children leaving home and the parents retiring

Aging

6. Retirement. Usually one spouse ends up living alone

Quality of LifeThe degree of satisfaction from life“Good “ housing gives people satisfying

surroundings that improve their quality of life

1. Personal = everyone and every family is unique and what type of housing that improves quality of life is unique. Individual importance.

2. Society = to improve quality of life, everyone has to work together. Well-kept buildings and nice landscapes.

3. Privacy = adds to quality of life so that people can relax and have recreation. Security systems, blinds, and fencing.
