Cross-X.com Negbook Omri Ceren Lacanian Psychoanalysis Page 1 of 50 Jacques Lacan was a French psychoanalyst who explained Freud’s discovery of and observations about the split subject (that is, the subject constituted by a conscious and an unconscious) by recourse to descriptions about the nature of language. According to Lacan, there is a radical and unbridgeable gap between the signifier (concept-trigger) and the signified (concept) –  more simply, a word is never identical to the thing that it tries to describe. Among other things, this gap prevents us from ever fully and completely describing either ourselves or reality. W e find ourselves in an endless and always ultimately impossible effort to try to do both (that is, to either fully describe ourselves or reality). This effort becomes the epitome of desire, and one of the consequences of Lacan’s insights is that desire, because it aims at the impossible, can never be fully satisfied. Instead, what occurs is that we create fantasies of completion that allow us to convince ourselves that we ’ve either described ourselves or reality. However, because these are just fantasies they are inherently unstable and therefore symptoms eventually emerge that threaten them. Our desire for the fantasy is so overwhelming, however, that rather than try to give up the fantasy we usually try to cover over the symptoms that threaten the fantasy. There are two levels to this kritik. The first level is simply that the plan tries to address mental health problems (i.e. depression, eating disorders, etc) without understanding the way that the mind actually works. Without understanding Lacanian psychoanalysis, the affirmative’s plan is doomed to be a band-aid solution that will cause the harms to reappear. The second level addresses the affirmative’s harms and solvency claims. It is an application of Lacan’s insights about the individual to the social body. The kritik identifies the harms as symptoms of a failing fantasy (whether it is the fantasy of multiculturalism, or American strength, or anti-racism, etc). The affirmative plan is essentially engaged in trying to treat the symptoms to save the fantasy. However, remember that one of the consequences of Lacan ’s theory is that the fantasy will always be unstable and there will always be symptoms to it. Eventually, the symptoms become so overwhelming that treating them individually becomes almost impossible. Even then people don’t want to give up their fantasies, however. What has historically happened instead is that to save failing fantasies, from Nazism to Manifest Destiny, people create out-groups that they can blame the failure of the fantasy on. In other words, rather than realizing that saving a fantasy is impossible, people try to blame some group for the failing of the fantasy. The implicit solution is that the elimination of that group will bring back the fantasy, and the results are always horrific –  the out-group is exterminated. The kritik calls on the judge to reject the affirmative ’s attempt to save their failing fantasy in order to avoid such horrific consequences.
