Thiscourseoffersanintroductiontopsychologyasascientificdisciplineandasaprofession,withspecialemphasisoninitiatingtheacademicandprofessionaldevelopmentofstudentsintheBachelorofPsychologyprogramme.Thecontentofthiscourseisstructuredaroundthegraduateattributesassociatedwiththescientist-practitionermodel,thebasisforthetrainingofpsychologistsinAustraliaandinternationally.Thiscoursealsoprovidesafirststepinyourdevelopmentofpsychologicalliteracy,thatis,thecapacitytoutiliseyourpsychologicalknowledge,skillsandattitudesinaconstructivemanner,withtheaspirationalgoalofbecomingapsychologicallyliterateglobalcitizen.

RationalefortheInclusionofContentandTeachingApproachTheintegratedacquisitionofthegraduateattributes,aspartlyindicatedthroughassessmentofthelearningoutcomes,comprises“psychologicalliteracy”.This(aswellasPSYC1001andPSYC1011)isthebeginningofthatjourney,withanemphasisonlearningandapplyingpsychologicalprinciplesto“self-management”knowledge,skillsandattitudes(KSAs)thatshouldbeusefulinyouruniversitystudiesandbeyond.Bythetimeyoureachthirdyear,therewillbea“capstone”courseorexperiencethatwillassistyouintheprocessofintegratingyourlearningacrossdifferentpsychologycourses,andthusprovidingyouwithsomeinsightintoyourownlevelofacquisitionofpsychologicalliteracy.
TeachingStrategies
Thiscourseinvolves2hoursoflecturesperweek,aswellasa2hourpracticalclass.PracticalParticipation:Practicalsareanessentialandcompulsorypartofthiscourse,andwillinvolveinteractiveactivitiesthatbuildonthepreparatorymaterial,andassistinthedevelopmentoflearningoutcomes.Tobenefitfromandtocontributetopracticals,preparationandcompletionofallpreparatoryworkisrequired.Materialrelevanttotheassignmentswillbepresentedanddiscussedinpracticals.Yourattentionisalsodrawntothefollowing:Yourpracticalsessiontime:Youmustattendthepracticalsessiontowhichyouhavebeenallocated.Itwillnotbepossibletoswitchorchangepracticalclassesonceallocationsarefinalised.Practicalsessionattendance.Attendancewillberecordedatthebeginningofeverypractical.Late-comersmaybeaskedtoleave,andallabsenceswillberecorded.Missingpracticals.Inadequateattendance(lessthan80%ofallpracticals)mayresultinfailuretopassthecourse(whetherornotyouhavemedicalcertificatesorotherdocumentation).Ifyouareunabletoattendpracticalsbecauseofsicknessorothercircumstancesoutsideyourcontrol,thismaybegroundsforspecialconsiderationtodropthecoursewithoutfailure.PleasecontactDrMorrisassoonaspossibleifthisisthecase.Forevery6-credit-unitcourse,youareexpectedtospendanaverageof10hrsperweekonthatcourse—thisincludesclass-time,pre-andpost-practicalpreparationrequirementsoutsideclass-timegroupwork,data-gatheringexercises,andthenormalstudytimenecessarytoadequatelycompleteassignmentsandexaminationstudy.Undernocircumstanceswillemploymentbeacceptedasanexcusenottomeetexpectationsforclassparticipation,groupwork,orassessments.Remember,thesemestertimesarequiteshort(finalexaminationswillbeuponyoubeforeyouknowit),soitisyourresponsibilitytoensurethatyoudonotfallbehindwiththeongoingassessmentdemandsofthecourse.

Plagiarism is presenting someoneelse’s thoughts orwork as your own. It can takemany forms,fromnothavingappropriateacademicreferencingtodeliberatecheating.
UNSWgroupsplagiarismintothefollowingcategories:
• Copying: using the same or very similar words to the original text or idea withoutacknowledging the source or using quotationmarks. This also applies to images, art and designprojects, as well as presentations where someone presents another’s ideas or words withoutcredit.
• Inappropriateparaphrasing:changingafewwordsandphraseswhilemostlyretainingtheoriginal structure and informationwithout acknowledgement. This also applies in presentationswhere someone paraphrases another’s ideas or words without credit. Whatifplagiarismisfoundinmywork?Ifplagiarismisfoundinyourworkwhenyouareinfirstyear,yourlecturerwillofferyouassistanceto improveyouracademic skills.Theymayaskyou to lookat someonline resources,attend theLearningCentre,orsometimesresubmityourworkwiththeproblemfixed.Howevermoreseriousinstancesinfirstyear,suchasstealinganotherstudent’sworkorpayingsomeonetodoyourwork,maybeinvestigatedundertheStudentMisconductProcedures.

WorkingtogetheronamathsassignmentAgroupofMathematicsstudentsworkedtogetheronanassignmentwhentheyhadbeentoldthiswasnotallowed.Allquestionswherethestudentshadworkedtogetherweregivenzero,andthisleadtosomestudentfailingtheassessment.
NoreferencinginanassessmentA third year student submittedamajorassessment that includedmaterial froma journal articlepublishedinCanada.WhenhisessaywassubmittedintoTurnitin,itlettheacademicknowthatthestudentdidn’treferencethematerial.Thestudentwasgivenzerofortheessay,andbecauseitwasworth50percenthefailedthecourse.
CopyingdesignworkA final year design student used images of someone else’s designs in herwork and he said thedesignswerehisown.Thematterwas formally investigatedbyhis Facultyandhewas found tohavecommittedacademicmisconductandfailedthecourse.
