SUMMARYOFTHECOURSE

Thiscourseoffersanintroductiontopsychologyasascientificdisciplineandasaprofession,withspecialemphasisoninitiatingtheacademicandprofessionaldevelopmentofstudentsintheBachelorofPsychologyprogramme.Thecontentofthiscourseisstructuredaroundthegraduateattributesassociatedwiththescientist-practitionermodel,thebasisforthetrainingofpsychologistsinAustraliaandinternationally.Thiscoursealsoprovidesafirststepinyourdevelopmentofpsychologicalliteracy,thatis,thecapacitytoutiliseyourpsychologicalknowledge,skillsandattitudesinaconstructivemanner,withtheaspirationalgoalofbecomingapsychologicallyliterateglobalcitizen.

RationalefortheInclusionofContentandTeachingApproachTheintegratedacquisitionofthegraduateattributes,aspartlyindicatedthroughassessmentofthelearningoutcomes,comprises“psychologicalliteracy”.This(aswellasPSYC1001andPSYC1011)isthebeginningofthatjourney,withanemphasisonlearningandapplyingpsychologicalprinciplesto“self-management”knowledge,skillsandattitudes(KSAs)thatshouldbeusefulinyouruniversitystudiesandbeyond.Bythetimeyoureachthirdyear,therewillbea“capstone”courseorexperiencethatwillassistyouintheprocessofintegratingyourlearningacrossdifferentpsychologycourses,andthusprovidingyouwithsomeinsightintoyourownlevelofacquisitionofpsychologicalliteracy.

Thiscourseinvolves2hoursoflecturesperweek,aswellasa2hourpracticalclass.PracticalParticipation:Practicalsareanessentialandcompulsorypartofthiscourse,andwillinvolveinteractiveactivitiesthatbuildonthepreparatorymaterial,andassistinthedevelopmentoflearningoutcomes.Tobenefitfromandtocontributetopracticals,preparationandcompletionofallpreparatoryworkisrequired.Materialrelevanttotheassignmentswillbepresentedanddiscussedinpracticals.Yourattentionisalsodrawntothefollowing:Yourpracticalsessiontime:Youmustattendthepracticalsessiontowhichyouhavebeenallocated.Itwillnotbepossibletoswitchorchangepracticalclassesonceallocationsarefinalised.Practicalsessionattendance.Attendancewillberecordedatthebeginningofeverypractical.Late-comersmaybeaskedtoleave,andallabsenceswillberecorded.Missingpracticals.Inadequateattendance(lessthan80%ofallpracticals)mayresultinfailuretopassthecourse(whetherornotyouhavemedicalcertificatesorotherdocumentation).Ifyouareunabletoattendpracticalsbecauseofsicknessorothercircumstancesoutsideyourcontrol,thismaybegroundsforspecialconsiderationtodropthecoursewithoutfailure.PleasecontactDrMorrisassoonaspossibleifthisisthecase.Forevery6-credit-unitcourse,youareexpectedtospendanaverageof10hrsperweekonthatcourse—thisincludesclass-time,pre-andpost-practicalpreparationrequirementsoutsideclass-timegroupwork,data-gatheringexercises,andthenormalstudytimenecessarytoadequatelycompleteassignmentsandexaminationstudy.Undernocircumstanceswillemploymentbeacceptedasanexcusenottomeetexpectationsforclassparticipation,groupwork,orassessments.Remember,thesemestertimesarequiteshort(finalexaminationswillbeuponyoubeforeyouknowit),soitisyourresponsibilitytoensurethatyoudonotfallbehindwiththeongoingassessmentdemandsofthecourse.

Assessmentdetails:ResearchandCommunication(30%)GroupAssignment1(5%):Thisassignmentwillinvolveanalysisofaresearcharticle,wherebyaseriesofquestionswillneedtobeanswered(e.g.,identifyingtheindependentanddependentvariables).Yourgroupwillberequiredto submit one written response (for which you will all receive the same mark) in your Week 5Practical.GroupAssignment2(25%):The field-study presentation in Week 12 will be based on a field study that will be designed,conductedandpresentedinsmallgroups.Youwilltestaspecifichypothesisbycollectingdatafromatleast20participants,andyourgroupwillpresenttheresultsofyourstudytotheclass(forwhichit is expected that all groupmemberswill receive the samemark).Reportingon research in anyareaofscienceisanessentialskillthatreflectsyourabilitytosynthesiseempirical(research-based)material requiring a considerable level of both theoretical and conceptual understanding, and toreportyourconclusionsclearlyandconcisely.Thisassessment taskwill (a) familiariseyouwith theprocess of undertaking research in psychology, (b) familiarise youwith a particular reporting styleandhelpyouacquirethebasicsofeffectiveandefficientscientificcommunication,(c)emphasisethedevelopmentof your scientific communicationand information literacy skills, aswell aspromotingcritical thinking, and (d) provide youwith a supported collaborative learning experience. ThinkingLikeaPsychologist(25%)CareerAssignment(2%):TheCVandjobapplicationassignment,dueonMarch10,isdesignedasatriggertohelpyouthinkaboutwhatskillsyouwouldneedtoacquiretoworkintheareaofpsychology.Inparticular,youwillbegivenaJobAdvertisementandrequiredtopreparearesumeanda150-wordexpressionofinteresttoapplyforthejob.Later,SamanthaBerry’scareer-orientedlecturesandpracticalswillfamiliariseyouwiththeskillsinvolvedindeveloping,identifying,documenting,andreflectinguponcareer-relevantachievementsinrelationtograduateandprofessionalattributes.Youwillbeaskedtoreflectonwhatyouhavelearntinthecareersjournal.Journal(13%):AttheendofWeeks4,7,and12(noearlierthantheendofyourtutorialand11pmSundaynight)youwillbeexpectedtosubmitashortwrittenpiece(50-250words)inresponsetoaseriesofquestions,viaMoodle.Thesewillbeworthatotalof6%.Inaddition,nolaterthan11pmonMonday,June6th,youwillbeaskedtosubmitafinal,integrativejournalassignment(max500words),worth7%.Thefourwrittenjournalsubmissionsaredesignedtohelpyoureflectuponwhatyouhavelearnedinthelectures,practicals,andassessmenttasks.Eachjournalwillfocusonspecificelementsofthecourse,andwearelookingatyourabilitytointegrateandapplyyourexperiencesinthecoursetoyourownlifeexperiences,beliefs,andexpectations.Courseparticipation(10%):Thiswillbejudgedonthebasisofyoursubmissionofhomeworktasks,yourengagementwithgroupworkandPositivePsychologytasks,aswellasyourgeneralparticipationinandcontributiontotutorials.Itisnotenoughtojustturnup,youwillbeexpectedtomakevaluablecontributionstobothclassdiscussionsandgroupactivities.Pleasenotethatyouwillneedtoundertakesome“homework”data-gatheringexercises,andMoodleexercises,includingwatchingandrespondingtovideos,aspartoftheclassparticipationmark.

Plagiarism&AcademicIntegrityWhatisplagiarism?

Plagiarism is presenting someoneelse’s thoughts orwork as your own. It can takemany forms,fromnothavingappropriateacademicreferencingtodeliberatecheating.

UNSWgroupsplagiarismintothefollowingcategories:

• Copying: using the same or very similar words to the original text or idea withoutacknowledging the source or using quotationmarks. This also applies to images, art and designprojects, as well as presentations where someone presents another’s ideas or words withoutcredit.

• Inappropriateparaphrasing:changingafewwordsandphraseswhilemostlyretainingtheoriginal structure and informationwithout acknowledgement. This also applies in presentationswhere someone paraphrases another’s ideas or words without credit. It also applies to piecingtogether quotes and paraphrases into a new whole, without referencing and a student’s ownanalysistobringthematerialtogether.

• Collusion:working with others but passing off the work as a person’s individual work.Collusion also includes providing yourwork to another student before the due date, or for thepurpose of them plagiarising at any time, paying another person to perform an academic task,stealingoracquiringanotherperson’sacademicworkandcopyingit,offeringtocompleteanotherperson’sworkorseekingpaymentforcompletingacademicwork.

• Duplication:submittingyourownwork, inwholeor inpart,where ithaspreviouslybeenpreparedorsubmittedforanotherassessmentorcourseatUNSWoranotheruniversity.

Whatifplagiarismisfoundinmywork?Ifplagiarismisfoundinyourworkwhenyouareinfirstyear,yourlecturerwillofferyouassistanceto improveyouracademic skills.Theymayaskyou to lookat someonline resources,attend theLearningCentre,orsometimesresubmityourworkwiththeproblemfixed.Howevermoreseriousinstancesinfirstyear,suchasstealinganotherstudent’sworkorpayingsomeonetodoyourwork,maybeinvestigatedundertheStudentMisconductProcedures.

Repeatedplagiarism(eveninfirstyear),plagiarismafterfirstyear,orserious instances,mayalsobeinvestigatedundertheStudentMisconductProcedures.Thepenaltiesundertheprocedurescanincludeareductioninmarks,failingacourseorforthemostseriousmatters(likeplagiarisminahonours thesis) even suspension from the university. UsingtheinternetinappropriatelyAfirstyearstudenthandedinanassignmentwhereshehadcopiedfromawebsite.Her lecturerrealised she didn’t understand you have to reference websites in the same way you referencebooksandjournalarticles.ThelecturerexplainedhowtoreferenceandsenthertoaworkshopattheLearningCentretohelpherimproveherskills.

WorkingtogetheronamathsassignmentAgroupofMathematicsstudentsworkedtogetheronanassignmentwhentheyhadbeentoldthiswasnotallowed.Allquestionswherethestudentshadworkedtogetherweregivenzero,andthisleadtosomestudentfailingtheassessment.

NoreferencinginanassessmentA third year student submittedamajorassessment that includedmaterial froma journal articlepublishedinCanada.WhenhisessaywassubmittedintoTurnitin,itlettheacademicknowthatthestudentdidn’treferencethematerial.Thestudentwasgivenzerofortheessay,andbecauseitwasworth50percenthefailedthecourse.

CopyingdesignworkA final year design student used images of someone else’s designs in herwork and he said thedesignswerehisown.Thematterwas formally investigatedbyhis Facultyandhewas found tohavecommittedacademicmisconductandfailedthecourse.
