Vision A just society without poverty and discrimination

Mission To reach out to the poor and downtrodden primarily to meet their basic needs for survival and help them to attain overall development

Approach

Prachodana follow a multi-stakeholder participatory approach in our programmes.

Objectives• To facilitate community based (rural as well as urban) sustainable development process.• To facilitate and promote programmes for poverty alleviation and livelihood security. • To facilitate and promote gender equity, decentralization and participatory approaches in

development process. • To work for the development of agriculture & allied agriculture sector and watershed management. • To promote environment conservation and management programmes. • To facilitate Human Resources Development Programmes. • To facilitate studies, researches and learning process especially through educational activities,

both formal and non-formal, according to the need.• To inculcate in the individuals a sense of cooperation through small scale industries.

Major Interventions Since its inception, Prachodana has extended its hand to the various sections of the community including underprivileged in the slums and streets, the hungry, sick, destitute, orphans, aged, dalits and tribes. Some of the major thrust areas and activities of the society are:

‘Shanti Ashram’- Home for the Destitute• During these years of pro-poor activities, the ‘Prachodana’ staff and volunteers have witnessed

several instances of pain and suffering of the sick and dying on the streets. Attempts to find and admit them in hospitals and rehabilitation centers would often fail as these places would have no space to accommodate them. This dream has turned into a reality with the inauguration of ‘Shanti Ashram- Prachodana home for the Destitute’ on 2nd October 2014 by His Beatitude Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, the Major-Archbishop Catholicos of the Malankara Catholic Church.

• The inmates are provided with food, clothing, medicine & medical care. During their stay, if their families are identified they will be sent back to their home after their treatment. Those who have no families of their own, continue to stay back in the Ashram. At present, we have fifteen members at the centre, served by three staff members.

Food for the Hungry• ‘Prachodana’ started this virtuous service on 1st may of 2010, by providing meal to the starving

stomachs on the city streets of Delhi. • Under this unique programme, food in packets are collected daily from homes, individuals

and institutions, in and around the city and give it at free of cost to the homeless, physically handicapped, the mentally challenged, the sick , the starving children and aged, and have no one to depend on as they are found on the footpaths and on the streets. About 200 to 1000 packets are being distributed daily.

• On special occasions like Christmas, Easter, Deepawali etc… we prepare additional food and enhance our reach to around 1,500 persons on the streets.

Clothing & Space Curative Health Care – (Mobile Clinic)• Prachodana collects medicines and clothes from institutions & individuals and provide to the sick

and needy people at free of cost. In most of the cases, Prachodana would identify the wounded people and treat them with necessary medication.

• During winter, Prachodana procures woolen clothes and blankets and distributes them in the slums or camps where these poor people take refuge. A staff nurse is fully engaged for this programme.

Non formal Education for the Less Privileged • Non formal education is given to the less privileged communities in urban areas. The programme

is two fold. • One for the children of the construction and domestic workers, started during 2010-11 and other

for the children from slum areas started on 14th December 2014. After their school hours, the students come to the tuition centre (At Neb Sarai, New Delhi) for the better understanding of their subjects. At present, 80 students are coming for tuition.

• The basic education for the children belonging to four to ten years of age of slum dwellers at Mansaravor Park, New Delhi is conducted in a night shelter there. At present, there are fifty eight students who are enrolled for the basic education programme.
