SEPTEMBER 10, 1971:HEINZ HALLOPENS ITS DOORS
The opening night for the PittsburghSymphonyOrchestra in its newly-renovatedhome was full of celebration fitting to thegrandeur of the building itself. September10, 1971 marked the 45th anniversary of thePittsburgh Symphony and the 20th year ofWilliam Steinberg’s role at the helm of theOrchestra. Before the opening event, sub-
scriptions for the 1971-72 season were soldout!
The festive eveningwas celebratedwithceremony and pageantry: flowers adornedthe tables and hallways; dinners were heldfor guests; champagnewas served to all; andabove all, world-class music was performedby the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Theentire city of Pittsburgh was celebrating theopening of its new performing arts centerand the nation took notice.
A thousand of the 2,847 guests were

Although theHilton was only two blocks from the newvenue, Mr. Heinz provided his guests withair-conditioned buses to transport them tothe red carpet rolled out in front of theentrances to the Hall.
Members of the National Council onthe Arts, including chairwoman NancyHanks, deputy chairman Michael Straight,Marian Anderson, Charlton Heston, JamesEarl Jones, Maurice Abravanel, conductorand director of the Utah SymphonyOrchestra, concert pianist Rudolf Serkin,Peter Mennin, director of the JuilliardSchool, and sculptor Richard Hunt, amongothers, attended the opening night’s events, despite the John F. Kennedy Center for thePerforming Arts opening the same week alittle closer to home.
The inaugural concert of the PittsburghSymphony Orchestra in its new home of
Heinz Hall for the PerformingArts began at8:40 p.m. and concluded at 10:45 p.m. Thededication address was given by Henry L.Hillman. The oboe sounded an ‘A,’ MaestroSteinberg arrived at the podium and the firstnotes of Beethoven’s Overture toConsecration of the House rang throughout thenew concert hall. Samuel Barber’s Fadographof a Yestern Scene, commissioned by theAlcoaFoundation for the occasion, followed theOverture. Prior to intermission, MaestroSteinberg led the PSO in the first movementof Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 in C minor,“Resurrection,” with the rest of the work tofollow after intermission. Soloists for theevening were Joanna Simon, mezzo-sopra-no, and Benita Valente, soprano. ThePennsylvania State University Chorus, directed by Raymond Brown, completed thenecessary forces for such a momentouspiece, aptly chosen for the resurrection of aworld-class concert hall from the “ashes” ofPenn Theatre.

biography
Dave KozIn a career that spans 20 years and a dozenalbums, saxophonist Dave Koz has estab-lished himself as one of the most prominentfigures in contemporary music.
As noteworthy as his body of recordedwork and as entertaining his live performanc-es and other past accomplishments might be,Koz finds himself in an era of dramatic andsweeping change where everything oncetaken for granted is suddenly up for grabs. Kozembraces this era of change, on HelloTomorrow, his first album for ConcordRecords. Released in October 2010, HelloTomorrow debuted at number one on bothBillboard’s Top Contemporary Jazz Albumschart and iTunes’ Jazz Album chart and wasnamed the “Best Smooth Jazz Album of 2010”by iTunes. Hailed as “an event record” by TheNew York Times, it has already yielded twonumber one singles: “Put The Top Down,”which spent 18 weeks at number one on theMediabase Smooth A/C chart (the longest stintat number one of any of Koz’s chart-toppinghits) and “Anything’s Possible.”
Produced by Grammy winners John Burkand Marcus Miller (who also appears on mosttracks), Hello Tomorrow features a diversearmy of high-profile guests: Herb Alpert,Jonathan Butler, Brian Culbertson, Sheila E.,Boney James, Jeff Lorber, Keb’ Mo’, RayParker, Jr., Lee Ritenour, Christian Scott andothers. Each of the 13 tracks, most of themwritten by Koz and his collaborators, otherspenned by friends and legends, focuses onbeing open to new beginnings, and trustingthat the future is unfolding in all the right waysfor all the right reasons.
“I’m excited to be with a new recordlabel after nearly 20 years,” says Koz, “but it’sreflective of a larger change for me personally, and there’s always some apprehension thatcomes with big changes. The more people Italk to, the more I realize that there are mil-lions of people with a similar story – the lossof a job in an economic downturn, the end ofa marriage, the beginning of a new career, anycircumstances that force them to take a step ina different direction or reinvent themselves insome way. They’re reaching a certain pointwhere they see a life ahead of them that they
never expected. Many of us are at the begin-ning of a new era, and we’d be wise toembrace it.”
The project has been a guiding force forKoz, and could be the same for longtime fansand newcomers alike. “I made this album part-ly as a means to help myself through this unfa-miliar time,” he says. “Hopefully it could be atool to help anyone else in a similar situation.”
Music, and more specifically, the saxo-phone, have been Koz’s primary survival toolssince his childhood and adolescence in L.A.’sSan Fernando Valley. He started playing as ameans to land a spot in his brother’s band, butsomewhere along the way, “the saxophonebecame my best friend, my most trusted ally, because it enabled me to communicate feel-ings that I didn’t have the words for. In manyways, it saved my life.”
After earning a degree in mass communi-cations from UCLA, Koz took the leap into acareer as a professional musician – a decisionthat immediately led to touring gigs withvocalist/multi-instrumentalist Bobby Caldwell, keyboardist Jeff Lorber and pop singer RichardMarx. He signed with Capitol and released hisself-titled solo debut in 1990. Noteworthy fol-low-ups included the gold certified LuckyMan (1993), Off the Beaten Path (1996) andfour holiday albums – December Makes MeFeel This Way (1997), Dave Koz & Friends: ASmooth Jazz Christmas (2001) Memories of aWinter’s Night (2007), and UltimateChristmas (2011). The gold certified TheDance (1999) and Saxophonic (2003) eachspawned five top five hits on the contempo-rary jazz charts, and the latter album scoredtwo Grammy nominations.
In addition to the 2007 Christmas album,Koz also released At the Movies that sameyear. Produced by the legendary Phil Ramone,At the Movies spent 12 weeks at the top ofBillboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart andscored a second Grammy nomination for BestPop Instrumental Album. A year later, Koz fol-lowed up with Dave Koz at the MoviesDouble Feature CD + DVD.

Keyboardist/Composer Gregg Karukas' 11solo CDs have garnered consistently solidreviews for his signature piano touch, pristineproduction, and melodies that are both soulfuland sophisticated. “GK” is his latest project onTrippin Records. In addition to being one ofthe few smooth jazz artists that writes and pro-duces his own solo projects, Gregg has a solidtrack record contributing to the careers ofmany others over his three decades on thecontemporary jazz and TV/film music sceneas producer, songwriter/arranger, musicaldirector and keyboardist. His latest high pro-file gig: musical director and keyboardist forthe sold-out Dave Koz and Friends MusicCruises to Alaska (2011) and Europe (2012).
Since moving to Los Angeles from theWashington, DC area in the early 80s, Gregghas recorded and toured with everyone fromSergio Mendes to The Rippingtons (he was afounding member), Rockwell, Larry Carlton,George Benson, Richard Elliot, Dori Caymmi,Peter White, Kirk Whalum, Paul Brown,Melissa Manchester, Jessy J. (he co-wrote andarranged Jessy’s #1 hit, “Tropical Rain”),Brenda Russell, and The Jazzmasters Tribute.Gregg has received multiple best keyboardistnominations at the Oasis and NationalSmooth Jazz Awards and his radio hitsinclude: #1 “Nightshift,” #1 “Summerhouse,”#4 “Blue Touch” and #4 “Girl in the RedDress.”
Gregg spent his early years close to thejukebox in his father's roadside tavern inBowie, MD absorbing the hits of the sixties —from The Beatles to Motown, Stevie Wonder, then singer/songwriters like Carole King,James Taylor, Leon Russell, Laura Nyro andJoni Mitchell. “I was inspired by the idea thatyou could touch people's emotions withmelodic songs and lyrics that meant some-thing.” At age 17, right out of Bowie HighSchool, Gregg joined with Pittsburgh nativeTim Eyermann, the former lead alto playerwith The Air Force Airmen of Note to formEast Coast Offering, where he honed his com-positional skills and jazz chops in "jazzlounges” up and down the coast. They quick-ly became Washington, DC’s top original
crossover group — opening shows at thefamous Cellar Door for artists such as AngelaBofil, Larry Carlton, The Robben Ford Band(pre-Yellowjackets — this is where Gregg firstmet Russell Ferrante), Jeff Lorber (w/KennyGorelick....G.), and many others.
As a key player in the emergent LASmooth Jazz scene, Gregg’s early bands andCDs included young undiscovered sax talentsDave Koz, Gary Meek and yes, Boney James, before his breakout Warner Brothers deal. Hislong-time associations with these and othercontemporary artists such as Rick Braun, PeterWhite, Brazilian guitarists Ricardo Silveira andDori Caymmi, Richard Elliot, singers ShelbyFlint and Brenda Russell, Paul Brown, new-comer Jessy J. and many more are evidence ofhis solid place in the all-star realm.
“People say my music sounds romanticand uplifting — and I look so happy on stage,”he says. “It's totally true. For me, the bestmusic comes out of an inner feeling of eitherintense happiness or sadness. I always try tostay faithful to that original inspiration, because that is where the true ‘sound of emo-tion’ comes from.”
That uplifting attitude shows in his con-certs, as Karukas has emerged over the yearsas one of the genre's most dynamic and inspir-ing live performers since he first took the stageat the 1987 Catalina Jazz Festival with theoriginal Rippingtons.
