Hello and goodbye to our magical, marvellous, fantastic, wonderful and brilliant manatees, hummingbirds and mongooses! (There are not enough adjectives to describe how fabulous you all are!)

We cannot believe it is the last week of term! We have truly loved teaching each and every one of you and are so sad that our time teaching you in the classroom got cut short. You are all amazing, and your new teachers are so, so lucky to have you! You will be able to see welcome videos from your new teachers this week, which will be so exciting! Guided Reading For this last summer term learning pack, I thought: “Let’s do something fun!”. So I decided to do a book I have read to LOTS of classes whether they are Year 2 or Year 3 or Year 6, and they have all laughed tons! You can find a link to a video reading of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=489micE6eHU

Activity 1: Can you identify each of the crayon characters from the postcard clues? Work out which crayon said each quote, name and colour the crayon.

Who Am I?

4

Activity 3: The crayons in this box are very upset! What could they be saying or thinking?

You can add their words and thoughts here or make your own speech and thought bubbles like this:

Page 5: P.S.H.E………………………………………… 38fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...short. You are all amazing, and your new teachers are so, so lucky

5

Activity 4: Duncan needs some help. Can you write a letter trying to convince one of the crayons to not quit?

Activity 5: Last task. This is all about colours. Start by unscrambling the different crayon colour names:

Page 6: P.S.H.E………………………………………… 38fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...short. You are all amazing, and your new teachers are so, so lucky

6

There are lots of colours in the world, these are just a few. Which colour would you add to your crayon box and why?

Think about all the different colours you have been exploring when you did your Wadsworth Jarrell art and your Yayoi Kusama art. Think about what your colour would be used for colouring in. EXTENSION: There are so many things you could do with crayons - can you find some other activities you could do? Like make a crayon character. What ideas do you have?

Before you look at any of the tasks, can you work out how many children liked each sport? Which is the least popular sport? ………………………………………………………………………. How many children voted for football and tennis? ……………………………….. How many children voted for hockey and basketball and swimming? ……………………………… How many children voted altogether? …………………………………………… Look carefully at the next pictogram. Then sort the statements into true or false:

Page 9: P.S.H.E………………………………………… 38fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...short. You are all amazing, and your new teachers are so, so lucky

9

Statement True or false?

The horses were the least popular animal.

The number of chickens seen were half the number of cows.

The total amount of sheep and pigs were 70.

Science This week our scientist of the week is…

Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai was born in Kenya and went to

university in America! After completing undergraduate and master’s degrees in biology, she returned to Kenya,

where she wanted to save the environment and fight for women’s rights. She founded the Green Belt

Movement, that teaches Kenyan women how to plant new trees in deforested areas and sustainably draw income from the land. Since then, the Movement has

trained 30,000 women in trades to raise them out of poverty, and planted over 51 million trees. For her dedication to both environmental conservation and the

advancement of women’s rights, Maathai received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 — the first African woman ever to receive the award.

Lots of books have been written about her and her amazing work, listen to one here:

Wangari Maathai: The Woman Who Planted Million of Trees

To celebrate the work of Wangari Maathai, over the summer we would like you to create a seed collection ready for you to sow and plant next year!

Plants and crops are bursting into flower everywhere at this time of year. In your

gardens or the park, see if you can spot any plants that have gone to seed and pop these seeds in your collection.

To collect the seeds have a go at bursting seed pods and shaking seeds from ripe seed

heads!

You can also have fun designing and making paper seed packets to store them in!

Topic

We know you did something similar a few weeks ago, but summer is peak butterfly season in the UK so it is the perfect time to make a butterfly feeder and monitor the butterflies in your garden over the summer! This was the most successful feeder the teachers found, so we would like you to have a go at making this one! Equipment:

- Extra large water bottle / plastic plate - String - Beads (for decoration) - Old fruit (butterflies love the sugar in rotting fruit!) - Hole punch

Method:

1. Cut the bottom off your water bottle or get your plastic plate. Punch four holes around the rim and a few in the bottom to let out rain water.

2. Attach string to the four holes. 3. Decorate the string with beads. 4. Place cut up pieces of fruit on the plastic bottom. Butterflies are particularly

fond of sliced, rotting oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, peaches, nectarines, apples, and bananas!

5. Hang your butterfly feeder in your garden or out your window and watch the beautiful butterflies come to feast!

6. Put up photographs of your feeders on Seesaw!

Art Go to folder w/c: 13.7.20 on and watch ‘ART: Romero Britto’

I hope that you are going to have just as much fun finding ways to respond to this artist as I have had sharing him. As always, here are some suggested activities though you may have something else in mind you’d like to try. Activity 1. What’s in a word?

Try some word art Britto style. You could write your name, a word( think about our values and dispositions) or you may even want to write an inspirational message. Activity 2. Portraits - you, family, celeb, animal…

Romero Britto loves to create portraits for the rich and famous. Why don’t you have a go at creating a portrait of your lovely self, family member, a celebrity ( past or present) or an animal. You could use a photocopied photograph ( copy it on low density in black and white) and then paint/felt tip pen on your design. Or you might simply draw them freehand. Activity 3 - buy, sell, buy, sell....

Britto’s art can be seen on a number of merchandise ranging from coke bottles to armchairs. Why not design some merchandise too! You could choose anything from a

Page 31: P.S.H.E………………………………………… 38fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...short. You are all amazing, and your new teachers are so, so lucky

31

cup to a car! Or may even want to wrap something you have in paper and then draw the design on. Remember, whatever you choose to do, try to do it in Romero Britto's style. You,ll need to think about:

● The types of colours he uses ● How the colour white is used ● How the colour black us used ● What shapes features in his work ● The types of lines he uses and how he uses them ( using a ruler will help here) ● Go on Hitherfield! Let's get happy!

You may want to use one of these templates to begin!

Handwriting

Reminder: Have you got yourself a sharp pencil?

Use the lines in your homework book to practise writing the letter below.

1. Check you are sitting upright, with both feet flat on the floor. 2. Make sure your non-writing hand is resting on the table. 3. Practise writing the letter in the air in front of you (sky writing). 4. Start writing the letter from the red dot.

For each activity this week, do three lines of practise for each join.

Start on the red dot and use the lines to help you! This week you will practise joining to the letter ‘s’.

Practise sky-writing these shapes before each activity to get your fingers warmed up.

Activity 1: Today’s join is… ns

Phonics

Hopefully you had a go at exploring the Phonics Play Comics and interactive games last week. Please keep exploring them if you found them helpful and fun:

https://phonicsplaycomics.co.uk/comics.html There are comics for all Phase 2, 3, 4 and 5 letters and sounds patterns, you can choose

which one you’d like to read. The Phonics Play website phonics interactive games are currently free to access by

logging in with Username: march20 and Password: home. Before each activity this week there is a 4-in-a-Row Phonics game you can play. Each one has a different set of blends to concentrate on using. Today is bl, gl, and cl. You play with a partner; choose a colour each (counters or pens/pencils); take turns reading aloud; if you read it correctly you cover or colour the word with your counter/colour; whoever gets 4 in a row is the winner!

Activity 1: Today’s tricky word is… to Have a look at the high frequency words you have covered in Phase 5:

oh, their, people, Mr, Mrs, looked, called, asked, said, so, have, like, some, come, were, there, water, where, who, again, thought, through, work, mouse, many, laughed, because, different, any, eyes, friends, once, please, little, one, do, when, what, out

Page 41: P.S.H.E………………………………………… 38fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...short. You are all amazing, and your new teachers are so, so lucky

41

Each letter has a value e.g. a=1. Use Spelling Scrabble to practise the words you find trickiest. ‘Have’ has been done for you to show you how to do it:

What are the days of the week?

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday! What small word is in all of the days of the week? Read through Dilly’s Diary and answer the questions below:

43

4-in-a-Row Phonics Game: fl, pl, and sl blends.

Activity 2: Today’s tricky word is… two Today we are going to look at adding the suffix -ing to verbs. Sometimes when we say or write about things we are doing, we can use different verb endings to describe the same thing: I meet my friend I am meeting my friend What has changed in the sentence? Have a look at this sentence: I eat my dinner I am eating my dinner Can you see that ‘am’ has been added and the verb has -ing added? Change these verbs: walk ……………………………………………………. park ……………………………………………………. see ……………………………………………………. go ……………………………………………………. look …………………………………………………….

Page 44: P.S.H.E………………………………………… 38fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...short. You are all amazing, and your new teachers are so, so lucky

44

All these verbs don’t need to be changed when -ing is added: it is just the verb+ing. Can you write some sentences using these verbs with -ing added?

break, leap, sleep, cheat, float, boil, sail Remember: -ing is a suffix that shows something is happening. But there are lots of words that have ing on the end that are NOT verbs showing something happening. Have a look at the word grid below. Colour the suffix -ing words in red and the ordinary ing words in blue .

EXTRA CHALLENGE: Can you think of any other words that end with ing but are NOT suffix -ing words?

Page 45: P.S.H.E………………………………………… 38fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...short. You are all amazing, and your new teachers are so, so lucky

45

4-in-a-Row Phonics Game: br, cr , and dr blends.

Activity 3: Today’s tricky word is… has This activity is all about recognising the suffix -er. Lots of words with -er on the end are verbs that change to become nouns. E.g: teach teacher driver ………………………………………. paint ………………………………………. plumb ………………………………………. photograph ………………………………………. Some words with -er on the end are adjectives that compare: fast faster

Page 46: P.S.H.E………………………………………… 38fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...short. You are all amazing, and your new teachers are so, so lucky

46

This wordsearch has words made from the verbs and nouns below into their new -er nouns. Can you find them all using the clues of the verb and noun words without the -er added?

We can also add -er to words to compare them:

Olly Grandad Grandad is older than Olly.

Page 47: P.S.H.E………………………………………… 38fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...short. You are all amazing, and your new teachers are so, so lucky

47

Which lighthouse is taller ? Which flag is smaller? Which scarecrow is shorter?

Which child is young er?

4-in-a-Row Phonics Game: gr, fr , pr and tr blends.

Page 48: P.S.H.E………………………………………… 38fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...short. You are all amazing, and your new teachers are so, so lucky

48

Activity 4: Today’s tricky word is… tomorrow This activity is all about recognising the suffix -est. These words are adjectives but they are a special kind of adjective - they are called superlative adjectives. Superlatives describe the most that something could be e.g.

Here are 2 activities for you to complete using -er and -est to compare:

Page 49: P.S.H.E………………………………………… 38fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/...short. You are all amazing, and your new teachers are so, so lucky
