PSD NewsTerm 3, 2016 Published 12 October, 2016
Welcome Back!Well Term 3 went by in a flash and here we are at the doorstep of Term 4 already! Our newsletter celebrates all the achievements of our students throughout last term and summarises important information for the term ahead. Please keep your diary handy so you can pop all those important dates in as you read through it.
Many of our students participated in exams during term 3. Their results were wonderful, but they are not our sole definition of success. The success was in our student’s determination, resilience and commitment to
constantly improving themselves. Well done to all those who participated!
During term 3 we welcoming the lovely Alarni Morgen to our team. Her classes have already been very well received by our students and I am very much looking forward to Alarni taking on the teaching of more classes in 2017. You can read more about Alarni on page 7.
This last term the PSD teaching team have been working on reviewing our Policies and Procedures in light of the new Child Safety Standards. All dance studios must be compliant with these standards by January 2017. We are well on the way to making our policies and procedures available for comment and feedback. We truly value your input and encourage you to make comment as these documents are distributed to you.
As many of you are aware we have been exploring options to expand our studios. We have been through the process of applying for a permit to trade from the Unit next door. Unfortunately, our neighbours are not so keen on the idea and have objected. We could pursue it further but it would involve a significant amount of time and financial resources to do so. As a short term option we are exploring some other venues to cater for some classes, particularly on a Saturday morning. Whilst this may not appear to be ideal I am of the view that there is a reason for everything. Perhaps another venue will present new opportunities?! The growth of the school this year is testament to our strong values and organisational culture. Regardless of where we dance those things will not change! We have certainly demonstrated this with our Tyabb venue. We now welcome close to 40 students each week at the Hungry Peacock and we look forward to extending this further next year.
Our 2017 timetable is “under construction” and it will be made available to our existing valued dance families in the first instance. You will receive the timetable with a link to our new online enrolment portal where you will be easily able to enrol, select classes and organise payment information all in the ONE place!! I strongly encourage to get in quickly before we release the timetable on the 1st December to families new to our school.
Rehearsals for all our performances are well under way. The Enchanted Fairy Garden presented by the Petite Dancers is quite simply going to be divine. Storybook Adventures for the rest of the school is a feast of fun, fantasy and all drama all rolled into one. We look forward to a wonderfully enjoyable, fun and magical term 4!

Our Vision
Peninsula School of Dance is
hub of artistic expression
and activity for young people. A place where young people are nurtured,
challenged and inspired to be the best they
can be.
Boys Day at the BalletLachlan and Addis
enjoyed every moment of their classes at the The
Australian Ballet boys day on Saturday. Well
done boys, what a wonderful experience
for you both!
D-Step has been very busy this term, putting routines together for performances. The Mineez and senior D-Step crew kicked off by performing at the A for Attitude launch in Langwarrin. This was a great opportunity for the crews, as not only did they show off their hip hop moves, they also had the chance to be back up dancers for a couple of the performers!
The Juniorz and the senior D-Step crew joined forces and danced a combined routine at Dance Aid Melbourne. This event raises money for charities, and this year they raised $6026.50 for Make a Wish Foundation. What an amazing effort!!!
Apart from our Annual Performances, the D-step crew will also be performing at the Bunnings Spring Launch on Sat 24th September and at our Petite Dancer’s Performance “The Enchanted Fairy Garden”.

ATOD Come TogetherI am so proud that our school is affiliated with the Australian Teachers of Dance. Over the school holidays I attended the Come Together conference in sunny Queensland. It provided dance teachers from across the country with a space to share, learn and celebrate the art form that is dance.
International guest speaker Tricia Gomez challenged us to really explore how we create an inclusive space for kids with disabilities in our studios;
Marc Brew was asked us to re-think teaching practices, movement pathways and their infinite possibilities;
Phillipa Zeigenhardt created a judgement free zone for teachers and challenged us to think about how we do the same for our students; Clint Salter & Chantelle Duffield inspired us to reflect on our business practices and investment ourselves as business owners;
Lisa Howell shared her infinite knowledge and wisdom on safe stretching and injury prevention;
Studio owners Danielle Lennon, Jane Grech, Stacey Morgen and Tanya Carne shared with us their wisdom and insights into their successful studios;
Karen Malek (ATOD President) provided outstanding leadership throughout the conference and shared her wonderful teaching knowledge in relation to alignment; Andrea Dalton delighted us with her birthday party plan ideas for studios;
Elysia & David from the team at Energetiks excited us with the news of their new boys Dancewear range being released early next year;
And Paul Malek reminded us the life is a dance, dance is life. It is constantly evolving, there are endless possibilities and nothing is incorrect.
Kate Meade gave us permission to dream and the affirmation to continue.
My head, heart and soul have been inspired, nurtured and challenged. Thank you ATOD and all involved.

I was honoured to witness a fine group of young people, led by the talented Alexandra Dellaportas, pull off an incredible production.
Miss Sophie Armstrong was also very much involved in rehearsals and behind the scences.
From the concept, choreography, sets, costumes, sound, lighting design they did it all. A number of PSD kids were involved in the production both onstage and off. I am completely blown away by their inspired creativity, commitment and tenacity.
The opportunity to dance alongside, and be mentored by Daniel Gaudiello (former Principal of the Australian Ballet), was quite simply incredible! Alex, at just 18 years of age you have created something that many could only dream of doing, bravo!
Watch this space...... the evolution of Spark Youth Dance Company is going to be fascinating to witness!!

I have been on the hunt
for a stellar Jazz teacher
all year. As you all know
my standards are high.
Our team of teachers
at PSD are dedicated
to the art of teaching
and Alarni is certainly
that! She is a beautifully
warm, engaging and
dedicated young teacher and we warmly welcome her to
our team. She will be teaching Silver, Senior and Advanced Jazz for
the remainder of this year and will expand her role with us in 2017
including taking the reins of theD-step Crews whilst Miss Carla takes
maternity leave. I am sure you will join me in welcoming her to our
dance family.

Alarni’s Bio
After discovering a love of dance at just three years old, Alarni set
out to devote a life to dance. Having trained at some of Melbourne’s
top dance schools including Tony Bartuccio Dance Centre, Patrick
Studios Australia (PSA) and Kelly Aykers Full-time Dance; Alarni
has the technical and teaching skills to cater to all levels of dance.
Alarni commenced her professional dance career at age 18,
performing in various commercial gigs with some of Melbourne’s
top choreographers including Alannah Scanlan and Jason Gilkison
(Everybody Dance Now – Channel 10 reality dance show). Alarni
made her theatrical debut in the English National Theatre/AKA
Australia national touring production of The Cat In The Hat, touring
Australia before commencing a full-time teaching and management
degree with Kelly Aykers to combine her passion for performing and
children’s entertainment. Alarni believes that one dance class can
uplift and inspire, and hopes to continue being a role model for kids
by helping them to realise any dream is achievable with courage
and self-belief!
Dance Dads!
Thank-you to all the wonderful parents who celebrated the joy of dance with us during the last week of term. It was really
fun!
We loved the energy and enthusiasm
displayed, especially by some of our
awesome Dance Dads!
A word of grooming from my good friend Jane Grech, Director of the Jane Grech Dance Centre:
Does your dance teacher nag you about your hair? Taking off your jumper in class? Being appropriately groomed? Do you know why!?
She’s preparing you for life out in the world. Wear your uniform with pride. Be ready for class, show you have prepared, show that you are ready, show that you care. Look like a dancer - feel like a dancer for casual clothes in class equals a casual mind.
Show up, look the part, don’t hide under jumpers. Your body is your instrument - show it so you can grow. Be ready to receive corrections with humility and grace - they are your teachers gift to you.
When you hide, you avoid feedback. When you get no feedback, that’s when you should start to worry... Your teacher has given up. She doesn’t want to ask you to take off your jumper one more time, do this yourself, and be ready.
Be humble and hungry. This is why good grooming is important.

Miss Sophie becomes a Cecchetti Associate
Congratulations Miss Sophie
on becoming a Cecchetti Associate!
What an incredible
achievement and testament to your dedication to the
art of teaching dance. All
whilst studying engineering
& bio-medical science!
What a wonderful role model you
are for our young dancers.
On the 9th of September welcomed Toorak College Prep students to our studios. We hosted a dance class and activities focusing on the Central Idea “Imagination and creativity identifies individuality and uniqueness”.
We think a dance studio is quite possibly the most perfect place to explore this idea!
Showtime is just around the corner! We are having lots of fun trying on costumes and learning choreography. Remember dance is just like a team sport. When your child is away for significant periods and it can impact on the placement of other student’s.
Please make every effort to be at class and not miss rehearsals.

When I walked through the stage door at the Melbourne Arts Centre I was delighted to see a PSD friend, Lachlan Clue. After signing in and waving goodbye to my mum and sister, Joseph Chapman (A soloist in ‘Nijinsky’) escorted the class of around 10 boys to the rehearsal room. Joseph directed the class and after warm-up we started with 25 minutes of barre-work. After the barre we moved into the centre and did a series of turns, jumps, spins and leaps. Tours were challenging but really fun and exciting to do. At the end of out dance session we were all invited to observe a ‘Nijinsky’ class/rehearsal. The class included some familiar faces such as Francis Lawerence, Brett Chynoweth and Principal Artist Ako Kondo. It was exhilarating and inspiring to be amongst these dancers in this environment. I am so glad that I took the wonderful opportunity to take part in this class that benefited me so much.

ExamsPSD classical ballet, hip hop, jazz, tap and contemporary students worked extremely hard to prepare themselves for exams. In the lead up to exams students displayed diligence, commitment, self-discipline and poise.
Regardless of the results our students improved and learnt so much from the process of preparing for the big days. We are very proud of them all!.
