Learning Objectives

To develop your skills of communication—Listening, Speaking, interviewing, debating, persuasion, confidence,

vocal projection, making friends, collaborative working, negotiation and research.

Listening When listening, one is hearing what others are saying, and trying to under-

stand what it means.

Speaking The action of conveying information or expressing one's feelings in speech.

Interviewing An interview is a conversation where questions are asked and answers are

given. The word "interview" refers to a one-on-one conversation between

an interviewer and an interviewee.

Debating Debating and arguing. A debate is a formal type of argument that has a

structure. In a debate you argue a point of view as a part of a 'motion' or

topic.

Persuasion The action or process of persuading someone or of being persuaded to do

or believe something.

Confidence Confidence is a feeling of trust in someone or something. To be self-

confident is to have confidence in yourself. Self-confident people don't

doubt themselves. This is usually a positive word: you can be self-confident

without being cocky, arrogant, or overconfident.

Projection Vocal projection is the strength of speaking or singing whereby the voice is

used loudly and clearly. Body projection works the same way. It is a tech-

nique employed to command respect and attention, as when a teacher

talks to a class, or simply to be heard clearly, as used by an actor in a thea-

tre.

Building relationships Building relationships is about your ability to identify and initiate working

relationships and to develop and maintain them in a way that is of mutual

benefit to both yourself and the other person. Good relationships are the

key to getting things done and are essential when your success is depend-

ent on others.

Collaborative working Collaborative working is where two or more individuals work together to

achieve mutual benefits, in a spirit of trust and openness.

Motion A motion, also known as a proposition or resolution in other formats, is a

statement that usually sets the topic for the given debate

Negotiation A formal discussion between people who are trying to reach an agreement.

Research Research includes any formal and systematic collection of data and infor-

mation to establish facts and reach new conclusions.
