ULTIMATE DRIVING EXPERIENCE By Jackie Schuster JCDHA Secretary

It was a great weekend for Taking the Reins. The weather was great and so were the clinicians. Nancy Osterhaus organized a great group of people for the Ultimate Driving Experience. She had a diverse group of people talking about harnessing, hitching and then going out driving. You were able to get different presentations on harnessing and hitching. Some of the demonstrators went in great details on harnessing while others gave the basics. All the participants were

able to get a good education on the basics of harnessing a horse.

Everyone emphasized safety when harnessing and hitching. During one of the demonstrations, a participant picked up a horse being bitted differently than the other horse. Good Catch! After the demonstrations, participants that brought tickets were able to go for a ride and if they elected to they could try their hand on taking the lines.

The demonstrators were Steve Hasse and assistant Steve with Clydesdales, Mary Jane Svedberg and assistant Lena Lensmith with Percherons, Tim Smebak and assistants Joan, Nicole, Rachel and Josh with Percherons, Scott Mckinster and assistant Michelle Cheever with Shires and Nancy and Wayne Osterhaus with a POA and Clydes-dale. There were carts, a wagonette, people mover, surrey and a vis-à-vis to drive.

There were many comments on how awesome it was to drive the gentle giants and the POA. People were able to view boards on draft horses that included; a map and where the three major breeds Belgian, Clydesdale and Percheron originated, explanation of all the voice commands you can use with the horse, jobs they do, field work, horse shows and jumping. There was also a board in shape of a horse that explained what a hand measurement is and how a horse is measured. These boards were made by Lena Lensmith and Johanna Etlichter ,which were entered in the Wisconsin State Fair Draft Horse Education Division. They won the Chairman award.

On Sunday Nancy Osterhaus and her POA Sparkle were able to give a handicap person a chance to drive. She (participant) thought it was awesome and was very exciting about being able to drive. Nancy then directed her

to John Adametz, well-known farrier and teamster. He has made carts that were handi-cap accessible. She was then off to see him. Good Luck and we were glad to make your day.

Thank you to everyone that helped with the demonstration and brought horses.

Trail Riding

August seemed to fly by we were so busy! On August 10th Patty Wisneski, Gwen Kanies, and I headed to Antigo to meet Gail Seasor, Ken Carpenter, Margie Krae-ge, and John Jones to represent horses and the Wisconsin Horse Council at the Trail-Con. Here we showed that horses and ATV's can share the trails with a little bit of courtesy. Gwen, Patty, and I saddled up and rode the grounds interacting with the visitors and the ATV club that were present. At one point we were asked to act out the scenario of horses meeting up with ATVs on the trail for the Rhinelander television station. As Patty and I usually use mounting blocks to get on our horses, we were looking for a rock or table to use when along came an ATV rider. She shut off her machine when she saw us so we asked if we could use

her ATV to mount our horses. Apparently she was so surprised when we stood on the wheel of her ATV and our horses calmly accepted this. She told her ATV group who later had us reenact this for the camera. It always amazes me that our horses do so much for us when they trust us. As most of you have read previously, my horse Jazz, is new to most of this as she was trained to saddle last November and this is her first riding season. She was exposed to a lot of interesting things at Trail-Con. ATVs, a hard race track which they were grooming with a huge watering machine when we were riding in the infield, one of those wind men that have air blowing into them so that they dance around, and lots of people and kids wanting to pet her. She took all of it with a good look and then a "oh, okay" attitude. When we left Antigo, we went north and then east of Crandon to meet up with the Silver Dollar Saddle club to camp at the trails they maintain - Otter Springs recreation trail. The WHC had given the club a grant to put in a campground so we were interested in seeing the improvements they had made. Patty, Gwen, Gail, and I met some of our Machickanee Rider club members and the Silver Dollar club for a potluck din-ner and a trail ride. This club is very organized and enthusiastic about their trails. The Silver Dollar saddle club has been in existence since 1962. They still have some of the original members at their meetings. Otter Springs is 12.5 miles of trails. It consists of gently rolling hills and is nicely wooded. The campground is rustic with no amenities so make sure you bring water for your horses and yourself. Silver Dollar has plans to get a water pump and pit toilet in this area in the next year or two. It is already making plans to get the funds. Amy Franti and her soon to be husband, Kevin Kuebler, showed us around their trail system on Sunday morning and we had quite an enjoyable ride. The trails are well marked and maps are available on site. The following weekend Gwen and I met some friends at Nine Mile Recreation area (the opposite side of the Popple Ridge trails) for a day ride. This is always an enjoyable place to ride with some easy trails and then some fairly steep trails. It can give your horse some pretty good exercise depending which trail you ride. While there, I observed a potential disaster in the making. It was a warm day and slightly humid. We had parked in the day parking area next to another pair of trail riders who were also there for the day. These two and their dog went for a ride and then we met our friends and left for our ride. When we got back four hours later, I noticed that the horses were in the trailer next to us, the dog was nowhere to be seen and the women were in the bar. I got my horse situated with some water and hay in the shade and then went to look for these two young women as I had looked in on their horses and noticed the trailer was hot inside and the horses were standing in puddles of sweat. As I went in search of these women, one of them came out of the bar and I expressed my concern for the horses and the potential for deadly hyperthermia. She hohummed me and then let the dog out of the tack area. I don't know about

you but I have heard a lot about the dangers of hyperthermia for animals and humans in locked vehicles. Fortunately she did get into the truck and a short time later they pulled out of the parking lot. Please people - do not leave your hors-es, dogs, cats, children, etc. in cars or containers that trap heat. They can get heat exhaustion and die from over-heating. Also please have the courage to confront people you see doing this dangerous practice. It may save a life. On to bigger and better things. On Aug. 23rd Patty and I left for Madison to Taking the Reins at the Alliant Energy

Center grounds. Gail met us there as well as Margie to set up Camping 101. We brought our horses and set up several ways to camp. From tent camping and highlining to the ultimate of RV camping and everything in between, we were there to show you how to do it and answer all your questions. It was a wonderful experience for us and our horses. We met some very nice and inter-esting people while sharing our information. It was my first time at Taking the Reins and I learned something that every 4H club should know. You have to bring your horse as there is so much for you to participate in with your horse. Take a quick look at the website TakingtheReins.net. It lists the trainers and clinicians you could have had a lesson with. I took advantage of the 3 Minute Miracle. Bob Jeffreys and Suzanne Sheppard had the rider do a small obstacle course so that they could observe the horse and rider working together. Then Bob would offer a 3 minute explanation of what he observed and training techniques to improve your performance. Then Suzanne would tell you what she observed and offer equitation tidbits to improve your communication with your horse. You practice this a bit and then redo the course. If you were like me, you noticed an improvement from the first pass through to the next. Very fun and informative. I also observed the vaulting class where experienced vaulters helped you experience this exercise and then I saw one of the jumping clinics where beginners got very good lessons in rating your strides and canter leads over jumps. Quite impressive. Anyone interested in improving their riding through a lesson with your own horse should attend this next year. Some tickets for clinics need to be purchased before the event so make sure you check out 2014's web site. August is over now and it's on to September where we have trail rides schedules at Hay Meadow and at Wildcat and Kickapoo Valley Re-serve. Can't wait. If you see us at camp or on the trail, stop, say hi and join us on a ride. Until then, blue skies and good riding.

Trail Etiquette "Article reprinted with permission from the Kentucky Horse Council" and a link to www.kentuckyhorse.org

Etiquette and safety are close relatives that share a proportional relationship. In many cases a lack of one creates a breach of the other. Poor etiquette typically leads to unsafe activities, while excellent etiquette paves the road for safe riding experiences.

To keep riders in your party safe you should at a minimum:

• Nominate a leader/trail boss • Ride at the level/speed of the least experienced rider • Ask the group (and get consent) before increasing speed • Communicate concerns clearly • Maintain 10 feet or more between horses • The lead rider should notify others of danger; each following rider should pass the message along • Carry a cell phone on your body (not on your horse) • Carry a trail map • Pack a first aid kit • Require all youth to wear ASTM/SEI approved helmets (helmets should be replaced after every fall) • Recommend all riders wear ASTM/SEI approved helmets (helmets should be replaced after every fall) • Always return to the trailer/barn at a walk

Make sure that your horse is ready to trail ride. Horses need to build their muscle strength and endurance gradually, just like humans. It is really important to condition and desensitize your horse well in advance of a trail ride. This takes time and commitment. Conditioning rides should be conducted over similar terrain (i.e. riding up hills regularly in advance of a hilly ride) and in well fitted tack. Arena riding generally is not adequate conditioning for trail riding. More general information on desensitizing your horse can be found in “Is Etiquette Important” at http://www.kentuckyhorse.org/en/art/1148/.

Proper hoof care is vitally important to the soundness of horses used for all riding. Many horses are most comfortable trail riding with shoes (or specialty boots) and you should discuss the best option for your horse’s hoof care with your farrier.

Other considerations for your horse’s well-being while trail riding:

• Allow your horse the opportunity to drink at every water crossing • Check your tack regularly for proper fit • Examine feet and legs carefully after riding • Pick feet before and after every ride • Groom or wash your horse before and after every ride

In the horseback riding world there are universal etiquette practices (discussed more in depth in “Is Etiquette Important?” at http://www.kentuckyhorse.org/en/art/1148/) and specific etiquette for a variety of situations. Often we don’t think of trail etiquette immediately since trail riding is often a recreational activity without the formalities of “ring riding” or competition. However understanding and practicing good trail behavior is advisable.

Part of good trail etiquette is ensuring that you are respectful of trails and land areas which begins with your arrival at the trail head. Ways to become a better land steward include:

• Park only in designated areas • Keep your muck in the trailer and dispose of it at home or in a designated area • Tie only to your trailer, designated tie areas, or using a safe high tie (do NOT tie directly to trees) • Keeps your horse moving while he/she passes manure on the trail • Take out everything that you bring in (pack it in, pack it out) • Stay on the trail – do not create pass arounds to avoid areas • Only enter waterways at designated crossings • Avoid muddy trails – if you have to pass through mud – WALK • Obey all signage – do not ride in non-horse areas • Abide by all voluntary trail closures • Collect muck and scattered hay from your tie site and dispose of it at home or in a designated area • Fill in any uneven areas created by you or your horse • Follow the leave no trace ethics (more information at http://www.lnt.org/)

continued

Courtesy is another important part of enjoying the great outdoors on horseback. Many trails are open to multi users and it is im-portant that we communicate with others in a productive manner. When you encounter users on the trail you can make that meeting a positive experience by:

•Talking to them

•Asking them to step off the downhill side of the trail while you pass

•Sharing the number of riders in your group and asking them how many are with them

•Desensitizing your horse at home (see “Is Etiquette Important?” at http://www.kentuckyhorse.org/en/art/1148/)

•You should be courteous to other members in your riding party by:

•Waiting for gate openers/closers

•Waiting for all horses to drink before leaving a watering area

•Moving downstream to allow other horses ample room to drink

•Waiting for riders when they have dismounted or are off for any reason

•Not running up behind or alongside other riders

•Passing on the left

If your horse exhibits behaviors which require special consideration you should tell all the members of the riding party about those issues and place a ribbon of appropriate color both in your horse’s tail and mane. The following are common ribbon color codes:

*Red = Kick

*Green = Novice

*Blue = Stallion

Remember to keep an eye on safety, obey land stewardship rules, be courteous, and wear all the right ribbons to have an enjoyable ride every time.

More information on safe trail riding can be found in the Certified Horsemanship Trail Guide Manual available at https://www.cha-ahse.org/store/

We held our first (I hope of many) Horsemanship work shops with Bill Bailey. What a fantastic teacher, and the man is an encyclopedia of knowledge on horses . We started with in hand ground work and in the afternoon we were riding. There were four of us with all different aged horses and riders. This was a great refresher course for us. By the time we were finished, I had an idea of what I wanted to work on with my mare, Emilita .

Bill brought one of his horses and was showing us some great exercises we can start with and get our horses nice and soft It is very apparent to me that I need to start working a little harder and more often. Now I have to learn to make more time for my riding and learning . Thank you Bill Bailey and his wife Judy for a great workshop.

We are planning another workshop soon , just gotta find a date that works for every-one. Thanks again to all and hope to see you soon

Happy Trails to all and stay safe.

Gary and Claudia Shipshock at LAZYCREEK FARM

Where in Wisconsin?

Thanks to everyone for playing the game the past six months.

Last month’s picture was from High Cliff State Park. Here is October’s brain teaser. Good luck and as always, the first person to email me at

Alliant Energy Center NEW Pavilion

Due to the tight construction schedule and the issues revolving around winter construction in Wisconsin, the Al-liant Energy Center has decided to start construction on the two new, state-of-the-art Pavilions in April of 2014 ra-ther than in October of 2013. Construction will start immediately following the 2014 Midwest Horse Fair and the 2014 World Dairy Expo will be the first event to utilize the new Pavilions. The size and scope of the project will remain the same with the removal of 11 current barns and replacing them with 2 new Pavilions totaling 290,000 square feet. The new Pavilions will be completed before the start of the 2015 Midwest Horse Fair on April 17, 18, & 19. We hope you can all join us in 2015 as we unveil the Pavilions and the new look of the Midwest Horse Fair and the Alliant Energy Center.

We wish to thank our 2013 WHC Championship Challenge sponsors for their support of the Championship Challenge Horse Show on August 24 and 25 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Through their generous support we are able to grow our show and help make it the best.

Free Spirit Riding Therapy

Free SPIRIT (Special People In Riding Therapy) Riders, Inc. gratefully accepts the Wisconsin Horse Council check for $1,500 for their therapeutic horsemanship center.

Free SPIRIT Riders had an unfortunate and tragic incident on June 10 when a pit bull entered their property and proceeded to attack the therapy horses that were in the pastures. Six of the twelve horses in the herd where injured in the attack. Waupun Veterinarian Services provided 3 veterinarians who worked for four hours on the injuries and then provided follow up services.

Lake Lucerne Thanks Wisconsin Horse Council

Thank you so much for the grant check – it was a wonderful surprise at the end of a long busy season! Our pathfinders program participants here at Lake Lucerne Camp are sincerely grateful for your support of this program. We will put together a short article with pictures of our fall activities for the winter newsletter. Without help from Wi Horse Council this program would not be possible!

Southern Kettle Moraine Horse Trail FALL ROUNDUP BRINGS FOOD, FUN, FUNDS

TO HORSE TRAIL ORGANIZATION

PALMYRA – With bandanas and a trail ride, cowboy tunes, food, horse therapy, a raffle and auction, the annual Fall Roundup at Horseriders Campground brought fun for 100 participants and $2,500 for the many projects of Southern Kettle Moraine Horse Trail Association.

The Sept. 7 event began at noon when 40 riders followed the trails to Rushing Waters Fisheries on Highway H, where a new restaurant and hitching posts are under construction and samples of products were offered.

Dr. Tracy Busalacchi, Elkhorn Veterinary Clinic, performed veterinary spinal manipula-tive therapy on several horses in an afternoon demonstration. In appreciation, SKMHTA gave her one of 80 colorful trail-map bandanas on sale at the Roundup.

Another 20 bandanas went on sale at Suhmer’s in Eagle, and SKMHTA has ordered 100 more, to be ordered at www.skmhta.org or by calling 262-495-8611.

A social hour, dinner, a raffle and silent auction, entertainment by KG and the Ranger and a bonfire completed the day, and many partici-pants camped at Horseriders that weekend.
