Nazari NajeraScholarship will allow student to attend college and fulfill family dreams

Nazari Najera, a senior at Crandall High School, has been awarded a Smith-Hutson Scholarship to Sam Houston State University. While attending school in Huntsville, Nazari will be pursuing a degree in Hu-man Resource Management with hopes of a career in business upon graduation.

Dedicated to providing opportunities to students who otherwise may not have a chance to earn a bac-calaureate degree, The Smith-Hutson Scholarship Program is targeted toward students with financial need and academic potential. Each year, between 15 and 30 scholarships are typically awarded to incoming freshmen and up to $17,000 is offered for

each academic year. The scholarship is renewed for a total of four years as long as the student maintains the scholarship requirements. The attainment of this scholarship is significant and unique, because Nazari’s oldest brother, Cesar Najera, was awarded the same scholarship this time last year.

Born of immigrant parents, Nazari is the second oldest of five boys and will be the second in his fam-ily to graduate from high school and attend college. Without the financial support of the scholarship, Nazari’s dream of attending college and entering the business world was almost impossible.

Talk about a surprised young lady! Hope Hamil-ton's dad, Naval Engineer Preston Hamilton, recently showed up at one of Hope's Lady Pirates' softball games and created the biggest surprise of her young life! Preston had been deployed for the past eight months in the Middle East, and appeared at the game with flowers. Hope plays first base for the Crandall Lady Pirates. The event made local TV news.

Rachel Dugan is the first twirler from Crandall to receive the honor of being appointed a feature twirler for the upcoming semester at Stephen F. Austin State University for the university band. She has also been a UIL State Champion for three consecutive years and is going for her fourth gold medal this month. Special congratulations to Rachel for her outstanding accomplishments.

The 2016 Lady Pirate Softball Team marched through the season, clenching recent District and Bi-District Championship (at press time.)

The girls finished their regular season by outscor-ing their last two opponents in Athens and Kaufman 33-1. They scored 117 runs over eight games, giving up 10 runs for an average margin of victory by 11.7 runs. Crandall only played one full seven-inning game against Athens back on April 5,winning 7-2.

grate it yourself. So the usefulness of a dependable cheese grater was obvious. Like I said - simple, dependable, and very useful. How else would you have made macaroni and cheese? The only down side to these wonderful inventions was that you occasionally skinned a knuckle trying to get the last little bit of cheese grated. However, as long as you didn’t bleed too heavily into the food, no one was the wiser. If you happened to be at a din-ner party and were served anything with grated cheese, you just had to be sure the cook didn’t have skinned knuckles.

However, things are much different now days. There are all kinds of electric cheese graters on the market today. They slice, dice, chop, puree, liquify all in a matter of seconds and some even make small butterflies out of sticks of butter. Just kidding, they don’t make butter butterflies. I made that part up. But they do lots of things and fast. Not very dependable if you lose power in a storm, as they are electric, but they are certainly faster in good weather.

Now with all these new inventions for grating cheese, what has become of the original tower style, four-sided cheese grater with a handle on the top? Well, I will tell you. Some of them have been repurposed. That’s right. I have seen one person that put big washers on the front for eyes, a bottle cap for a beak, so it looked like an owl. Then they hung old silverware from the bottom and made a wind chime. Can you believe it? A useful kitchen tool repurposed as a wind chime. What’s next?

But that is not all. I saw someone else who took

Today I was introduced to a new term: Re-purposing. It stands for taking an item with a specific purpose that has out lasted its usefulness and transforming it into something altogether dif-ferent with no connection to its original purpose. We only have Pinterest and the DIY Network for all of these strange and different uses for the household staples we grew up knowing, loving, and appreciating because of their simple design and usefulness around the house.

May I explain? Do you remember the old metal, four-sided cheese grater? It was built like a tower and had a handle on the top. It stood about ten inches tall and each of its four sides offered a different set of blades depending on the type of food you were grating. It had a side that was covered in what looked like small ice cream cones. That side was the actual cheese grater. Another side had three or four long slits in it for making cheese slices. A third side looked as if it had about 400 nail holes in it. I never knew how to use that side. The last side had about 600 nail holes, only they used a smaller nail to make the holes. I never understood that one either. I tried using the nail hole sides a couple of times but they just chewed up the food and made mush. Maybe it was a mush maker. I don’t know. I just know it was never very useful to me. But you get my point? It was a simple and useful item that you could always count on. It was dependable.

There was a time when you could only buy a block of cheese that was cut off a larger block of cheese. If you wanted grated cheese, you had to

four of these unforgettable inventions, placed them in a chicken feeder trough with a candle under each one and called it a mood light. The very idea. A useful kitchen tool repurposed as a mood light.

You can just never tell what disrespect some folks have for the ingenuity of others. Out live your usefulness and somebody will repurpose you. Then it hit me. I’m getting a bit long in the tooth, as they say. I’m not able to keep up with the younger generation anymore. Everything is either digital, computerized, or gone viral. I can’t understand half of what young people talk about much less keep up. What if somewhere along the line, somebody wants to repurpose me? What would I become? How would they change me? I don’t think I want to be repurposed. I want me to stay me.

Then I remembered Psalm 139:13-16. “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fear-fully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” Well, that being said, God knows all the days of my life and that is good. However, if you happen to drive by and see that Terrie has me sitting in the front yard holding a plant, just know I am no longer the person I used to be. I’ve been repurposed.

Currently he has a 3.89 G.P.A. and ranks in the top quartile of his class. He has been an active participant on Crandall’s cross-country team, where he advanced as a cross-country regional qualifier, and the soccer team, serving as team captain for both teams. In addition, he has served as baritone section leader in Crandall High School’s marching band.

Do you love plants? Do you enjoy sharing what you know with others? Consider becoming a Kaufman County Master Gardener.

Master Gardeners are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people. They get over 50 hours of special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, Master Gardeners work as volunteers through the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension office, which sponsors the program. They provide information about gardening, landscaping, water conservation and pest management to their communities through answering horticultural questions, distributing information at lo-cal events, doing educational seminars and workshops and, in Kaufman County, conducting tours of their

demonstration gardens at the Garden Learning Center at 3003 S. Washington Street.

We are planning an information meeting on Thurs-day, May 12, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Kaufman County Library, 3790 S. Houston, Kaufman. The meeting is for anyone that wants more information about the program and training. The 2016 training class will be held in Kaufman at the Kaufman County Library every Thurs-day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. beginning on August 18, 2016 and ending on October 20, 2016. The cost is $100.00 and the deadline to turn in an application has been set for May 31, 2016. We will start interviews on June 3, 2016 and background checks will be required.
