The purpose of this booklet is to give you an overview of Providence
ministries and to highlight seasonal programs and activities. A January 2015
update will give an overview of 2015 events. Please visit our website
often for current news and early 2015 information.
For persons interested in church membership, an Inquirer’s Class provides
an opportunity to meet new friends, learn about the church and discover
ways to become actively involved. The class generally meets each Sunday in
January, March, May, September and November from 9:45-10:45 a.m. in the
Parlor.
History
Providence UMC grew out of a Sunday evening prayer meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ervin on November 29, 1953. The original Sharon Lane prayer group expanded and in less than a year, on January 10, 1954, the members unanimously voted to organize a new church.
The Charlotte City Mission Society in 1946 had purchased four acres of land at the intersection of Providence Road and Sharon Lane, in what was then a growing residential area. The Society donated this land for the new church.
By August 1954, plans were completed, construction approved for the original sanctuary and classrooms, known as the Brown Building.
Construction began October 3, 1954, and the first services were held in the new facility on January 9, 1955. The following Sunday, 181 persons were presented Certificates of Charter Membership.
Providence has grown to over 2,300 full members and over 316 preparatory members (baptized children who have not gone through sixth grade confirmation.) Additionally, there are over 300 constituents who count Providence as their church home but are members of other churches. Each Sunday an average of 825 persons participate in the worship services. An average of 555 people attend 33 Sunday School classes.
Additional properties have been purchased over the years enlarging the campus to over eight acres. A Children’s Building was constructed in 1958 and the Sanctuary Building in 1964. In 1998 our campus was completed with the addition of a structure that tied together the buildings and gave us much needed gathering space, a chapel, classrooms, offices, the multi-use space of Charter Hall (renamed Wolfe Fellowship Hall in 2014), a kitchen, the lower-level Mission Center and an additional parking lot. To make room for the new building, the much-loved Brown Building was razed after serving us well for over 40 years.
This campus is complete, but we continue to be the growing body of Christ. Buildings house new activities; off-campus sites enable the creation of additional ministries. As from the birth of Providence Church we strive always to discern God’s will for this place and His people here.
Worship
Central to this body of Christ are the times we come together to glorify God.
Traditional services are held in the Sanctuary every Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. These are also broadcast in the Atrium, the Chapel and the Parlor. The emphasis is on deep spiritual liturgy, relevant and applicable preaching, and the best of sacred music from throughout the ages.
The Net brings a new expression of worship to Providence UMC. This service is held in Wolfe Fellowship Hall every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. We will passionately pursue an authentic relationship with Jesus Christ. Building on the strong foundation of this church’s belief in reaching outside its walls, the new service will provide an environment to raise up the next generation of Christ-followers.

Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month at all Sunday morning services and each third Sunday at the 8:30 a.m. service. People of all ages and denominations are welcome at the table of our Lord.
The Sacrament of Baptism is celebrated at families’ request. This usually takes place during one of the Sunday morning service with congregational participation. In the United Methodist Church, we practice the baptism of infants, children, youth and adults of all ages. Baptism is prerequisite to joining the United Methodist Church. Any of the pastors at Providence UMC will be happy to discuss baptism with you.
Other Services
Weddings for members and their children may be held in the sanctuary or chapel. All arrangements for rehearsals and weddings should be made by calling one of the pastors. The Wedding Committee provides guidelines and assistance.
Funerals and Memorial Services may be held in the Sanctuary, Chapel or Providence Memorial Garden with leadership by our clergy. Members of a Bereavement Committee assist the families. The Atrium is available for visitation.
Worship Support
Nurseries are provided for each Sunday morning worship service for children from infants through kindergarten.
Children’s activities, worship guides and pencils are available for elementary students every Sunday. Find the bags near the main Sanctuary doors.
Our nave is equipped with a hearing loop system. Personal receivers are available for other desiring enhanced listening.
Specially trained ushers assure that congregants are welcomed, comfortable and safe.
Our Parlor is a quiet and private place available for nursing mothers during the worship services.
Golf cart drivers will give you a ride to the door from your car.
Visitor parking is reserved near the Providence Road entrance. Providence UMC has an arrangement for Sunday morning overflow parking in the lot behind Eddie’s Place and Leroy Fox Restaurants, located diagonally across from our campus near the corner of Sharon-Amity and Providence Roads.
Bus service is available each Sunday for residents of Aldersgate, Sharon Towers and The Cypress.
Music
The music department at Providence UMC has always provided beautiful music for our congregation, and the reputation of the choirs and pipe organ is well known throughout the region. There are many opportunities to glorify God with our choral and congregational voices.
The Chancel Choir leads worship each Sunday at the 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. traditional worship services. Rehearsals: Thursdays, 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., and Sundays, 10:30 a.m.
The Net offers Christ-centered, diverse, and eclectic selections of worship and praise songs that represent a wide variety of musical genres. The Providence Handbell Ringers lead in worship occasionally through-out the year and attends the Mid-Carolinas Handbell festival each fall. Rehearsal: Thursdays, 6:15 p.m. - 7:15 pm. The Encore Choir is comprised of seasoned adults who enjoy singing together for events and worship services at the church and in the community. Rehearsal: Thursdays, 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
The Youth Choir for sixth-twelfth grades regularly leads in worship. Rehearsal: Sundays, 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
The Asbury Handbells for sixth-twelfth grades occasionally lead in worship. Rehearsal: Sundays, 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Children Choirs participate in worship. All rehearse on Wednesdays.

Children’s Ministry
At Providence United Methodist Church we are committed to helping our children grow in their Christian faith through worship, study and fellowship. A strong Biblical foundation helps them become disciples of Jesus Christ who live out their faith in the church and in the world by glorifying God and serving others. We provide children a safe environment where they can develop a love of God, self and others. Parents are encouraged and equipped to be the leaders in their children’s Christian education.
Sunday School is a time for children to come together from 9:45 a.m. -10:45 a.m. with other children of similar age. Young children learn that church is a place where they are welcomed and loved. As children grow, they learn that God loves them and works through everyone, including themselves. All preschool classes are on the first floor of the Education Building. All older elementary classes are on the second floor. We welcome members and friends to come and experience the church school hour with us.
Worship Child Care is provided each Sunday by volunteer parents, who have Safe Sanctuary certification. Childcare at 8:30 a.m. is provided for infants through four-year-olds. A nursery is available during the 11:00 a.m. Worship Service. Toddlers and children (through age 5) remain in their Sunday School classrooms for 11:00 a.m. childcare.
The Assisting Parent Program provides our children from two-year olds through kindergarten with parent volunteers who assist teachers during the Sunday School hour and serve as caregivers during the 11:00 a.m. worship service. Parents volunteer quarterly: one time per child, per quarter. This gives the children more individual attention and lets parents share in their Christian education experience at church.
Childcare for infants is provided by paid caregivers who provide consistency for our youngest children.
The Weekday School operates from September through May and serves children ages six months to five years. The school’s hours are 9:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Families register in January for the school year that begins in September.
Children’s Fall/Winter Opportunities
Worship Readiness is an education program for 1st graders to prepare children to participate more fully in worship. Classes meet from 9:45 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. in the Discovery Center from September 7 through October 12.
Children’s Sabbath is a worship service designed to celebrate the special role our children have in the life of the church. The service this year is on October 12.
Bible Presentations are made to each first grader during the Children’s Sabbath Service on October 12.
The Fall Festival on October 19 includes Trunk or Treat, crafts, games, bouncy houses, food and fun for the whole family.
The Journey to Bethlehem on December 14 celebrates Advent. Families enjoy breakfast, Advent crafts, posing in the manger scene for a family picture, a children’s pageant and a mission project.
Children’s Moments are part of the 11:00 a.m. worship service on the fourth Sunday of each month.
Children’s Church is for four-year olds through kindergarteners. It meets in the Chapel on the 1st Sunday of each month during Sunday School.
Junior MinTs (Young Methodists in Training) is for fourth and fifth graders. The group meets monthly for Christian fellowship, programs, outings, and mission projects. On the second Sunday of each month they meet for Donuts and Devotions.

Youth Ministry
Grounded in the Great Commission from Jesus Christ to his Disciples, our
purpose is to SHARE God’s love by creating an environment that
SURROUNDS youth with encouragement and understanding, to then
SEND them forth empowered and equipped as Disciples of Christ.
Throughout the year retreats provide renewal, fellowship and spiritual
growth. Our youth enjoy outreach and mission both around the corner and
many miles away.
Parents are the spiritual directors of their home. The Youth Ministry Team
helps them to be successful. The team needs the help of parents so that we
can focus on building relationships with the youth.

Disciple Bible Study
Disciple is a program of disciplined Bible study aimed at developing strong Christian leaders. Small groups meet for fellowship, study, prayer and preparation for servanthood. This series is taught by trained facilitators. Classes run mid-September through May and meet on various days and times each week. Disciple I Becoming Disciples through Bible Study is an overview of the Bible using a thematic approach. The class is led to see God’s Covenant with the people of faith through the Old and New Testaments. It is a special journey for Bible students on all levels. This class is prerequisite to other studies in the series. Disciple II Into the Word, Into the World slows down the pace and looks in depth at the books of Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts. Disciple III Remember Who You Are looks at the prophets and the letters of Paul. Disciple IV Under the Tree of Life allows the student to delve into the group of books called the Writings. It then leads the student into a study of the Gospel of John and the Revelation to John. Second Generation Disciple Studies offers a 29-week study entitled Jesus in the Gospels. The format differs from the first four phases and looks closely at the Gospel texts and comparisons. Several shorter term Disciple Bible studies will also be offered.

The organized unit of the United Methodist Women is a community of
women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as
whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative, supportive
fellowship, and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the
global ministries of the church.
Providence UMW General Meetings are held at 10:30 a.m., and normally
are scheduled on the first Tuesday of each month from September through
May. The program is followed by lunch.

UMW Circles
Circles, which are smaller groups with an individual emphasis, provide time
for fellowship as well as study. Regular monthly meetings are from
September through May and many of the groups meet casually during the
summer. The age groups listed are merely an indication of current
membership; visitors of all ages are always welcome.
Methodist Men’s Fellowship
All men of Providence and their guests are invited to meet for great fellow-ship on the fourth Sunday morning of each month in the Wolfe Fellowship Hall Annex. Breakfast begins at 8:00 a.m. followed by music and a speaker. Programs focus on evangelism, mission and spiritual life. The Providence Men provide volunteer and financial support for many activities at the church and in the community. Meetings are held each month except August. Senior Adult Ministries
S.A.M.
Senior adult opportunities at Providence United Methodist Church are available through many avenues: vital adult Sunday School classes, Methodist Women’s Circles, Methodist Men’s Fellowship, choral and mission groups, community programs offering fellowship, learning and travel.
From September through May, LiveWires Luncheons take place every third Thursday of the month. Seniors meet at the church in the Wolfe Fellowship Hall Annex for a luncheon and program. Programs may be educational or entertaining. Our ultimate goal is to provide a time for seniors to connect to one another and find friendship and support.
NEW! Matter of Balance is a free workshop that works on issues related to falls, falls prevention, falls response. Two different times are offered: Meeting one time a week on Wednesdays at 3-5 p.m. September 10 through October 29. (The Wednesday class is now full.) Meeting two times a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9-11 a.m. September 9 through October 2. Space is limited to 16 people, so please sign up soon by calling the Welcome Desk.

Life Groups
ChristCare Groups are gatherings of six to twelve persons who meet on a
regular basis for mutual encouragement, prayer and worship, Bible study
and service to others.

Congregational Care
Stephen Ministry provides a special person who has been trained to walk with you during any difficult situation. This caregiver will prayerfully and confidentially support you as a friend. You may request this confidentially through Bill Jeffries in the church office, or through Susan Wollin at [email protected].
Prayer Ministry has established an extensive prayer chain. Any member can request confidential prayer by completing a request card found in the pews. The prayer chain goes into action after they are notified of the request. The request remains active at least three weeks or longer if needed. Hospital Ministry is a visitation ministry conducted by our Pastoral staff and Stephen Ministries. If you or a family member is admitted into a local area hospital please contact the church office at 704-366-2823.
Hospital Card Ministry is a means of showing our concern for PUMC members. Through communications with our church staff and Sunday school class contacts, we send cards to keep in touch with those who are hospitalized. Please contact Hettie Wright at 704-364-1758 for more information.
Homebound Ministry is conducted by Bill Jeffries and a team of volunteers. They visit our members who cannot come to church services and activities. This is supplemented by the Audio Video ministry which provides CD’s to those who are unable to attend services. Please call the church office for questions or requests at 704-366-2823.
Sunday Shuttle Service provides transportation to the church from several locations. Please share your specific needs by calling the church office.
The Health and Wellness Committee provides information, resources, opportunities and events to help members of Providence and the local community live a more complete life with the balance of the body, mind and soul. Bereavement Assistance consists of a group of caring and dedicated members who are available to be of service to families following the loss of a loved one. They guide and help in any way before, during and after the service, working with our ministers in planning and executing funerals and memorial services. If you experience the death of a loved one, the ministers at Providence can offer spiritual and emotional support. The ministers can be reached by calling their direct-office line or by cell phone. The after-hours Pastor-On-Call can be reached by calling the church office at 704-366-2823, ext 297.

Missions
Service to others has always been core to the life of Providence United
Methodist Church. Through volunteer efforts, financial support and
facilities usage we have touched many lives, both locally and globally.
The Haiti Mission began more than 30 years ago and is the longest
running global mission project in United Methodism. Our outreach has
grown to include the Tovar Medical Clinic, the School of Mercy serving
over 200 children, a Micro Finance Program and a Clean Water Initiative.
Work teams travel to Haiti each year. Every August a huge Attic Sale is
held to benefit these projects. This year the sale proceeds were over
$50,000!
Financial assistance and our prayers also go to other foreign missions,
including our own Jamie and Hollie Wollin in Cambodia.
Many Local Missions are supported by Providence financial and volunteer
participation. There is a place for everyone to serve. Fall renews our
efforts with schools through classroom tutoring and mentoring, Classroom
Central and Backpacks for Kids. As winter approaches, especially look for
opportunities with Room in the Inn and other programs that serve people
in need of housing, food and medical attention.
Our partnership with St. John’s United Methodist Church brings new ways
for us share with immigrants and the diverse population of our city.

St. John’s United Methodist Church
A unique ministry opportunity came to us this year! St. John’s United
Methodist Church became part of Providence United Methodist Church.
Because of our long association with St. John’s, our District Superintendent
asked Providence to consider a union with St. John’s to further the missions
of both churches.
Reverend Sam Om who had been serving St. John’s has now returned to his
home country of Cambodia as a missionary. Reverend Nina Wynn has
been a St. John’s pastor since 2005 and will continue as Campus Pastor.
Campus Co-Directors Jim Hutchinson and Sobe Sambath are responsible
for daily operations and activities on the St. John’s Campus.
St. John’s, located at 4305 Monroe Road, offers a sanctuary building and a
fellowship hall. These buildings provide for multiple worship services,
educational programs, and recreation for four different organized
congregations.
Uniting our churches enables St. John’s UMC to leverage the
organizational and administrative strengths of Providence while maintaining
its unique multicultural identity. For Providence UMC, this joining is an
opportunity to be in ministry with brothers and sisters in Christ in a
stronger relationship, and it will open opportunities for missions in the
future.
Each church launched a study team to examine the options and risks. Both
teams enthusiastically endorsed the merger and both Church Conferences
voted their approval. Together we look forward to being the growing body
of Christ, glorifying God and serving others.

Scouting

Recreation & Sports
Men’s Basketball players meet for fun, exercise and fellowship on Saturday mornings from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and on Sunday afternoons from 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. No registration is required. For more information, contact Brett Logan at [email protected].

Providence On Wednesdays
(POW) From September through May, everyone is
invited for Wednesday evening food, faith and

Bible Study is led by Pastor John Fitzgerald in the Chapel beginning at
NEW! Pickleball is a racquet sport in which two to four players use solid paddles to hit a perforated ball over a net. The sport shares features of other racquet sports, the dimensions and layout of a Badminton court, and a net and rules similar to tennis with a few modifications. Financial Support
It is our privilege and responsibility to contribute financially to the ministry of Providence Church. Our combined gifts provide for programs, facilities, staff, and outreach. There are several ways to be involved in this important effort.
The Annual Operating Budget
During the summer, committees and staff begin the budget process by analyzing current expenses and projecting upcoming needs. After additional research and adjustments, a draft of the proposed budget is prepared and presented to the Finance Committee. Their recommendations are forwarded to the Church Council for approval. In late fall, the Stewards present the budget to the congregation and request support. By mid-January, the final budget is adopted contingent upon pledges made. Individual pledge information is confidential.
Detailed copies of the current year operating budget and the audit are always available through the Church Business Office.
The Endowment Fund
This fund provides a way to endow the future of our church and to recognize the importance of good stewardship in every aspect of the church. Income generated through the investment of this fund is disbursed, generally in one of the following categories: missions, buildings, or general needs and ministries. The Endowment Committee oversees the investments and determines how the earnings are used.
Special Offerings
Throughout the year opportunities for specific financial support come before the congregation. They generally fall into one of two categories – special outreach programs of Providence such as the Haiti Mission and the Homeless Shelter; and solicitations from groups we support such as the Children’s Home in Winston Salem, the Gideons, and a Mother’s Day offering in support of Aldersgate, a United Methodist retirement community.

There are three ways to join Providence United Methodist Church. If you are currently a member of another church, you can join by transferring your membership. This process is very simple. Once you have joined PUMC, our Membership Secretary will send a letter to your previous church to request that your certificate of membership be transferred to PUMC. The Membership Secretary from your previous church will then send a letter acknowledging the transfer of your membership.
If you are not currently a member of another church, you can join PUMC by reaffirmation of faith or profession of faith. Those who join by reaffirmation of faith were once a member of a church but are no longer affiliated with one. Those who join by profession of faith have never been active in a church and are professing their faith to God for the first time.
