Principles of OperationWater containing volatile organic compo-nents (VOC’s), ammonia, hydrogen sulfide,carbon dioxide, and/or radon is introducedat the top of the degasifier. For example, dis-solved sulfides in groundwater, consisting ofhydrogen sulfide gas, bisulfide, and sulfideions, are cost effectively removed by degasi-fication. Spray nozzles or specially designedweir troughs uniformly distribute the contam-inated liquid. Packing and/or sieve traysprovide a large, turbulent surface area.Ambient air is blown into the bottom of thedegasifier and, as it rises toward the outlet,the hydrogen sulfide diffuses from the waterto the air because of the concentration differ-ential. In this way, the hydrogen sulfide willcontinue to transfer to the air stream in accor-dance with various chemical and mechanicalprinciples until equilibrium is approached. Ifnecessary, the hydrogen sulfide in the air canbe oxidized in an AroBIOS biological scrub-ber or a Duall chemical scrubber to non-odorous, non-toxic, and non-hazardous byproducts.
