Your support changed lives over the past year. From six year old

Ryan using his first words through a communication device to 19

year-old Sofia landing her first job, you’ve given over a thousand

people with disabilities the opportunity to make their own choices.

In 2012, PROVAIL celebrated our 70th year in the community.

We’re proud to continue the mission set out by Dr. Hulett Wyckoff

and dedicated founding families, and our focus today is providing

the best community-based support services we can to help people

with disabilities experience life according to their own choices. For

every donor - from those who stood up to support our founding, to

our new donors of today - thank you.

Every day, you are helping people with disabilities engage with their

communities – to go beyond just being in the community to being

a part of the community. Our clients want to live, work, learn, and

play in their communities according to their own choices. Your

support turns those hopes into a reality.

As we take stock of our 70 year history, we

are taking a deep look at who PROVAIL

is and what we want our future impact on

our community to be. Looking forward

to our 75th and even 80th anniversaries,

PROVAIL’s leadership is currently hard at

work mapping out the path we will take to

serving more clients in more ways than we do today. As we move

through this strategic process, I will be excited to share with you

and the PROVAIL community what we have planned.

We hope that, as our future continues to take shape and we

continue our dedicated work to those we serve today, you will join

us in our commitment to supporting children and adults with

disabilities to fulfill their life choices. However you are involved,

please know that your support matters!

Thank you,

When Anne St. Germain, owner of McDonald’s Book Exchange,

took on Aaron Witek as an employee she didn’t realize that the job he

started then would be so different from what he is excelling at now.

When Aaron started, Anne had some initial trepidation about hiring

a staff member with disabilities. “Aaron has shown so much more

potential than what we expected on his first day,” the local business

owner said. PROVAIL Employment Consultant, Nancy Anderson,

attributes some of that to the skills and confidence Aaron has

developed since he first started, but also to a shift in perspective for

Anne. Despite her first nervousness about hiring Aaron, Anne now

touts Aaron’s presence over the past two years as “a great experience.”

Originally brought in to assist St. Germain with janitorial tasks,

Aaron now zooms through the bookstore, buzzing in the background

as he organizes titles and restocks shelves with new inventory. In

addition to vacuuming the store and restocking cleaning materials,

Aaron now has the opportunity to interact with customers and take

an active role in the store’s business.

“He shows initiative, asks for new responsibilities, and he isn’t afraid

to let coworkers know what tasks he is confident enough to complete

on his own,” said Anderson.

Aaron also

understands the

meaning behind

a paycheck. While

St. Germain

notes that Aaron’s

always excited

and happy to be

at work, Anderson

emphasizes that he

values being able to

contribute to the bookstore and being able to be more self-sufficient

because of his job.

“Different businesses have different needs,” St. Germain

acknowledges. “But I’d definitely encourage other businesses to

engage with PROVAIL.”

As for Aaron, he loves that he’s been given the opportunity to gain

new skills. “I love sorting the books and puzzles” says Witek, who

is now able to cite his skills and experience when applying for

additional part time positions in the community this spring.

Creating OpportunitiesGlen Ramsey has a long history with PROVAIL. He has been a member of the Community Living Program for over 30 years and ran

his own snack shop in our headquarters location for over 10 years. In 2006, he wanted to make a career change. Having successfully

managed his own business for so long, Glen wanted the opportunity to work in an office environment. He wanted to be someone’s

employee – and PROVAIL was there to support Glen’s important career change.

Now, you can find Glen working with Pasado’s Safe Haven, an animal rescue center based in Sultan, Washington. Working with

PROVAIL Employment Consultant, Andrew Harman, Glen was enrolled in a specialized county-wide partnership between PROVAIL

and three other supported employment agencies to ensure that Glen was able to defy the barriers he faced to securing employment.

“Pasado’s has never customized a position like this before – I don’t think they even knew it was possible,” says Andrew. “They are so

excited to have Glen join their outreach team.”

As Pasado’s Safe Haven works to expand their profile in the Seattle area,

Glen now develops marketing materials, coordinates donor databases,

and engages local businesses to display informational materials about

the organization’s services.

In addition to his success with PROVAIL’s Supported Employment

program, Glen acts as an advocate for improvements in access and support

for the disability community. In the spring of 2013, Glen coordinated

a trip to Olympia for ARC Washington’s Advocacy Day highlighting

supported employment for people with disabilities in Washington State.

Glen and members of our employment team were able to meet with

Senator Maralyn Chase of Shoreline to support a legislative bill extending

supported employment services to 15,000 Washington residents who are

eligible for services but cannot access the support they need.Jeremy Norden-Paul, Andrew Harman, Glen Ramsey, Jordan Cotto, and Michael Goodwill

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

PROVAIL Employment Services provides community based vocational assessments, individualized job placement, job coaching and supported employment for individuals referred through the Washington State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) and Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD). Specializing in transition services and customized employment recruitment and training, PROVAIL served 249 clients in 2012, made over 1700 new business connections, created 73 new jobs, and secured employment for 100% of the 18

transition students served through the school to work program.

THERAPEUTIC & ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY SERVICES

The PROVAIL Therapeutic and Assistive Technology Services program helps children and adults with disabilities maximize their performance and productivity through comprehensive and specialized assistive technology, occupational, and speech therapies. In 2012, our clinic logged over 7,100 visits by 250 clients visiting from Blaine to Vancouver and Port Angeles to the Cascades. We now provide service to 5 school districts and have expanded our phone distribution to the Yakima Valley.

SEATTLE BRAINWORKS

A community-based Clubhouse program providing short and long-term support to people who have experienced traumatic brain injury. Our mission is to empower survivors of brain injury to relearn skills and create strategies that will help them reintegrate as happy and successful members of the community. Members are able to transition from being “patients” to again being active participants in life. In 2012, Seattle BrainWorks grew to 72 members and saw a 36% rise in member attendance hours.

Special thanks to our advisory board members: Elizabeth Crouch, Bjorn Krane, Michele Kauffman, Mike Hatzenbeler, Todd Kelleher, Tiffany Kopec, Janet Mott, Janice Navarre, Andrea Okomski and Valerie Wootton

DENTAL CLINIC

Adults with disabilities face significant barriers to obtaining community-based dental care. The PROVAIL Johnny Johnson Memorial Dental Clinic helps address the gap in services by performing over 1,500 dental services each year to 620 clients. The all volunteer staff of dental professionals are committed to helping adults with disabilities receive the best care possible. ART IS NOT AN OPTION!

Art is NOT an Option! is an innovative art program designed to provide artists with disabilities studio workshops and opportunities to showcase artwork in the community. Promoting creativity, independence, dignity and community integration for all participants, the program grew to 67 artists in 2012, held four community art shows, and engaged over 80 in-class volunteers.

COMMUNITY LIVING PROGRAM

The PROVAIL Community Living Program (CLP) provides 24 hour supported living to adults with severe developmental disabilities in order to assist them in becoming more active and involved members of their communities. In 2012, your support provided 304,947 hours of service to 64 residents in 19 housing sites, assisted over 10,000 client outings, and provided over 2,000 nursing visits to client homes.

FABRICATION DIVISION

The PROVAIL Fabrication Division is a social enterprise employing people with and without disabilities in a competitive environment. The Fabrication Division manufacturers products for the aerospace industry (including Boeing) and the Department of Defense. This past year we also added several contracts with private commercial firms, which are helping to diversify our revenue. Profits from the Fabrication Division are reinvested in PROVAIL’s direct service programs.

THANK YOU

These programs are made possible by the ongoing support of a strong and dedicated community of families, businesses and community members. We want to give a special thanks to the Pacific Northwest Insurance Council, the Seattle BrainWorks Advisory Board, the staff at McKinstry and all of our dedicated volunteers for supporting our ongoing program work and PROVAIL’s fundraising activities to support our programs and clients.
