What is glider ?

A light engineless aircraft designed to glide after being towed aloft or launched from a catapult.

Parts of GliderA glider can be divided onto three main parts :

Fuselage

Wing

Tail

FuselageIt can defined as the main body of a glider

It is cambered and in the middle portion, we attached the wing around the position where the camber is maximum by either making a slot in the fuselage or by dividing in two parts and then attaching.

WingIt is the most essential part of a glider

When air flow past by it, due to the difference in curvature of its upper and lower parts is lift is generated, which is responsible for balancing the weight of the plane, and the body can thus fly.

TailA tail or stabilizer is attached at the rear end of the

glider.

It is composed of two parts a horizontal stabilizer and a vertical stabilizer to provide stability and to control the vertical up down movement of nose.

This up-down movement of the glider is termed pitching.

How glider’s glide?Essentially there are three aerodynamic forces that act on a glider in flight :-

Lift : upward force (generated by wing)

Gravity : downward force (due to the weight of the glider)

Drag : backward force (resistance of air)

Bernoulli’s equation implies that pressure will be lower on the upper surface of the wing.

So when it is in straight and level flight the opposing forces of lift and weight are balanced.

During descent, weight exceed lift cause the glider to fly downward and it will build up speed due to gravity.

CONCLUSIONWe have learned how to make a glider We have learned how to apply physics concept such as

bernouli’s principle to help our glider to fly longer We managed to save cost in building a simple gliderWe now know different types of glider and their abilitiesWe now know how to work as a team to accomplish our

task
