Introduction

The purpose of this document is to provide information on the new features and enhancements released with this version of Protege GX.

Important Note on Software / Firmware Compatibility The release of Protege GX version 3.1.53 introduced a new feature where you are able to define the schedule used by doors and door groups when configuring an Access Level. This allows you to restrict access to certain doors for the period set in the schedule. For example, limiting access to a showroom so it may only be entered during office hours.

In order to use this feature, you must also be using a DIN Rail Controller running firmware version 1.44 or above.

If you are running an earlier version of firmware, or if you are using a PCB Controller, the schedule applied to the door is ignored and the Access Level will function as it always has.

However, if you are running firmware version 1.44 with an earlier version of the software, it may result in incorrect door operation. This means it is vital that all DIN Rail Controllers running firmware version 1.44 and above, are programmed using Protege GX software version 3.1.53 or above.

SQL Server Compatible Versions The Protege GX application uses a non-proprietary open SQL database engine to store and share information. Protege GX is compatible with the following versions of Microsoft SQL Server in either Standard, Enterprise, or Express editions:

SQL Server 2008 R2 (recommended)

SQL Server 2008

SQL Server 2005

The Express edition is a scaled down, free edition of SQL Server that includes the core database engine and functionality. It provides an alternative to the Standard or Enterprise edition which requires Microsoft licenses.

For your convenience, the setup files for SQL Server Express 2008 R2 (SP1) are included as part of the full distribution package.

Firmware Versions The Protege System is a high performance integrated system and to ensure your installations are running at the optimal performance, we recommend that all installed modules utilize the latest firmware releases.

For a complete list of current firmware versions, please refer to the ICT website (http://www.incontrol.co.nz/125/Downloads).

Firmware updates are available online from the ICT website or through your distribution channel. If you are having difficulty downloading any firmware or finding the appropriate version please contact the ICT support team (mailto:[email protected]).

Updating Firmware Updating controller firmware is carried out from the Protege GX user interface.

Warning: PCB and DIN controllers run completely different firmware. Deploying incorrect firmware to a Controller will result in total failure. This can be corrected, however the process to do so is time consuming. Please ensure you download and install the correct version.

Open the Protege GX application and login using an account with administrative permissions or at minimum the ability to perform system functions.

Select Global > Global Settings from the main menu.

Select Backup Now under the Main Database Backup options.

Wait for the backup to complete before proceeding.

2. Run the installation:

Run the supplied setup file (setup.exe) and follow the onscreen instructions.

When the installer is launched, it looks for the previous version of Protege GX installed on the local workstation and upgrades it to the latest build.

Progress is displayed as the database is upgraded and the application installed.

Detailed installation instructions, should you require them, can be found in the Protege GX Installation Guide.

MSMQ Integration Actions now include the Send Event to MSMQ type, providing the ability to transmit specific events to a queue using Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ).

MSMQ or the Microsoft Message Queue allows third party applications to take advantage of real time event connectivity with the ICT Protege GX Server. The implementation of the MSMQ technology provides a very flexible approach to integration and multiple message queues can be used.

MSMQ Use Case Integration Examples: Incident Management Reporting

The Protege GX and MSMQ integration supports platforms such as D3 Security Management System (http://www.d3security.com) or Perspective By PPM200 (http://www.ppm2000.com) enabling live alarm messages based on the programmed filter in Protege GX to be sent immediately to the incident management system. Event filters can easily be configured in Protege GX allowing complete control over what events are sent to the MSMQ.

Attendance Reporting

Send access events for a specific door to MSMQ for time and attendance using the defined Protege GX event filter. The attendance solution extracts these events from the message queue using the card number included in the event data, and the events are then processed by the time and attendance system.

Intrinsic Safe and Hazard Area Peg Board

Implement a hazardous environment live peg board for staff using a small C# application running in Kiosk Mode that maintains a list of users and clears the users when the main alarm area arms. In this scenario, a small C# application is written that links to the MSMQ and the events posted in the message queue are only in and out events from specific card readers that maintain access to the hazardous/restricted area. As a user presents their card, they are then processed by the application and shown as either being in or out of the area. When the alarm is armed, the queue is cleared and the cycle starts the next disarm cycle.

This can be used for multiple areas and is ideal when placed on a large screen display.

Pay as You Go and Sports Facility Integration

Sports facilities, clubs, gyms and many other systems can link to the MSMQ for user information that allows a usage count, pay as you go, or usage recharge system to determine the number of uses that person has remaining. The information can then be used to adjust users access using the ICT Protege GX SDK application. In addition, the users details can be shown outside courts or beside lighting management stations. This type of integration allows a complete automated approach to be taken with many facilities reducing time, energy consumption and system abuse.

Protege GX allows full programming and management of the Salto Systems locking solution using the SHIP interface mechanism.

The Protege GX installation allows full programming and management of the Salto Systems locking solution using the SHIP interface mechanism.

For detailed instructions on enabling the SHIP interface and configuring the SALTO integration options within Protege GX, please refer to the Protege GX Operator Reference Manual or contact ICT Technical Support.

Suprema Biometrics Integration Biometric Readers provide a high level of security and integrity by requiring users to submit biometric credentials to gain access.

There are three basic steps to enabling biometric support.

1. Add the Biometric Reader:

From the main menu, select Sites > Biometric Reader

Enter the IP Address of the reader and the IP Port the reader is connected to

Choose whether you want to Automatically Download Users to this Reader. When enabled, the Download Server will download users to the reader automatically. Disable this option if you don't want users to be downloaded, for example if the reader is only used for enroling (capturing fingerprints) and not attached to a door.

Page 27: Protege GX System Management Suite Release Notes | …6 PRT-GX-SRVR Protege GX System Management Suite Release Notes | Version 3.2.62 | May 2014 Updating Firmware from the GX User

2. Enable Suprema integration within the site, and assign the enrolment reader:

From the main menu, select Global > Sites then select the Biometrics tab

Ensure the option to Enable Suprema Integration is selected

Set a Facility Number. This is what is used to differentiate between a card or finger read. It must be a different facility code to any cards being used on site and all Biometric readers must be configured to send this facility code.

Choose the default enrolment reader from those available. This can be overridden if required, under the User's Biometrics tab.

3. Enrol the users biometric data using the selected Enrolment reader:

From the main menu, select Users > Users and choose the Biometrics tab. This tab is only enabled once biometrics has been enabled as above.

Click on the Scan button to begin enrolment. The user must scan their finger twice.

If required, select the Enable option for Finger Two. This allows a second finger to be enroled and can be used as a backup in case the primary finger is cut or scratched, or can be used in conjunction with the Duress function.

If required, select the Duress option. If the user presents this finger, access will be granted and a duress signal generated.

For detailed configuration, please refer to the Protege GX Operator Reference Manual or contact ICT Technical Support.

Scheduled User Import This is a separately licensed feature.

The ability to import users from a CSV file is a manual process so best suited to the initial setup of users. The new Scheduled User Import feature allows you to import users from a CSV on a schedule (every hour, day, week, etc) - effectively enabling you to create a low level integration to a third party system. For example, most organizations already have some form of user data source - such as an HR system or a student enrolment database. Many of these systems enable you to easily export this data as a CSV file or even an Excel spreadsheet. This feature allows you to import that list on a defined schedule, automatically creating new users in the Protege GX system when they are added to the other system.

There are two steps to setting up the scheduled import. The first step defines how the data in the file will be imported, and the second step defines when the file is to be imported.

Step 1: Configure the Import Wizard:

1. From the main menu, select Sites > User Import Job Step and click Add.

2. Enter a Name and define the Key Field descriptor. The key field must be a unique identifier (such as an employee ID or student number) and is used to ensure duplicate user records are not created when the CSV file is imported subsequent times.

3. Click Edit User Import Settings to define the import steps

4. Browse to and select the CSV File you wish to import the users from, then click Next.

5. Select the line to start importing data from and the text delimiter to use, then click Next.

If your CSV file contains a header row, ensure you start the import at line 2 so the header row is not imported.

6. Select each column in the panel on the left and map it to the associated fields you wish the data to be imported into on the right. The data in the top panel is updated as you make your selections. Click Next to continue.

One field must be mapped as the key field before you can proceed. In this example, we are using the EmployeeID.

7. Assign the facility number, first card number, and access level if you have not already done so. You can also choose to generate PIN numbers automatically if these have not yet been mapped. Click Next to continue.

8. Click Finish to complete the setup.

9. Click Save to finish configuring the user import.
