The Company

Our HistoryIn 1975 Harold (Lee) Tracey released onto the counter surveillance market a modified version of the “Staircase Receiver”, this was marketed as the Scanlock Harmonic Receiver. The product proved to be so successful that in 1978 Lee took the momentous decision of leaving the government and forming his own company and so Audiotel International was born. Although the early years proved to be exciting, Lee found the commercial side of the business restrictive to his natural creativity and therefore in 1981 he sold the design and company assets to the manufacturing team of Andrew Martin and Keith Penny under the name Middlewise Limited. They immediately changed the name back to Audiotel International Limited and from then on the company has grown into what we see today.

During his tenure at the helm Andrew oversaw the move from City Road London to Corby and acquired Security Research Limited. The acquisition included the Intellectual Property Rights to Charles Bovill’s design of the Non Linear Junction Detector (NLJD). This was to prove a significant decision as it bought 50 years of proven technology and made it available to the corporate market.

New developments and products followed and Audiotel quickly enhanced its reputation in becoming one of the world’s leading experts in the field of Technical Surveillance Countermeasures (TSCM). In 1995 the Superbroom was released which included an additional receiver to discriminate between dissimilar metal and electronics.

Following Andrew’s untimely death in 1997, the company entered into a period where it was run by trustees of Andrew’s estate, however developments and investment in staff continued; including the company’s largest contract of the time, supplying a modified (patented software algorithm) SuperBroom unit (NLJD) to the Indian Army for use in detecting the triggers used in the construction of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

This then lead to the company being sold in 2003 to a London based Investment Company. A larger follow on order from India was received and supplied a year later for the same equipment. This signified that the technology in the NLJD could be adapted for the purpose of detecting the triggering mechanisms used in the manufacture of IED’s.

In 2009 further high performance counter-improvised explosive device work was undertaken. Eventually the company’s largest contract to date was placed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) which resulted in a move to a larger purpose built premises still within the Corby area. In September 2015 the company was acquired by Tioga. Tioga is one of the UK’s leading, privately owned contract electronic manufacturers (CEM) offering a broad spectrum of state of the art electronic assembly.

Audiotel International continues to innovate, design, develop, manufacture and supply products to the world wide government, corporate and defence markets.

History of the SB DetectorConceived by Charles Bovill in the 1940s the Non Linear Junction Detector (NLJD) was employed to detect corrosion beneath the painted surfaces of aircraft. Over time he realised that the NLJD could be used to detect and locate Non Linear Junctions used in electronic components.

SBA lightweight and flexible suite of NLJDs offering increased target detection and discrimination.

Based on proven technology, theproducts provide an easy method todetect and locate hidden electronicdevices, whether they are switchedon, switched off or in standby mode.Target devices can include examplesof mobile phones, cameras, transmitters and recording devices.

Available in 2, 4 or 10 Watt options.Variants of the 4 and10 Watt modelsare also available with an integratedmetal detector, to detect screenedelectronics and locating triggeringdevices for IED’s.

SB Non Linear Junction Detector

In 1989 Audiotel International brought Security Research Limited and with that the intellectual property rights of the Broom. This represented 50 years of research and detailed knowledge in Non Linear Junction Detectors. The product was revamped and subsequently replaced by the Superbroom ensuring Audiotel had become a leading supplier of and synonymous with NLJD technology.

Audiotel has taken this NLJD technology and integrated it with Harmonic Receivers and Metal detectors, firstly with the Detect IV and then more recently the SB04MD and SM10MD. Since 2001 the technology has been employed to help detect and locate the triggers used in the construction of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Audiotel has taken the technology into the 21st century with the SB range of products.
