Household burglaries are often committed by opportunist thieves when there is no one at home. Once a home has been burgled there could be an increased risk that it will be targeted again. The same, or a different thief, may return to either steal belongings left behind on the first occasion or to steal items that have been replaced.

You can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of a second burglary by taking immediate action to improve security. We would also remind you that it is a policy condition that you must take all reasonable steps to prevent further loss or damage. We recommend that all your doors and accessible windows are protected with locks in accordance with the current standards of the Association of British Insurers.

For further advice talk to your crime prevention officer at your local police station, a member of the British Locksmiths Association or call us on 0370 900 3110. Lines are open Monday to Thursday 8am to 8pm, Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 1pm. Call charges will vary. We may record and monitor calls.

If you are considering installing, or upgrading, a burglar alarm system at your home then, like many insurers, we only recognise an intruder alarm company which is either a member of the National Security Inspectorate (NSI) or the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB). If you do not use such a company and it subsequently becomes a requirement of your insurance cover to install an intruder alarm, you may incur substantial additional expense.
