Protect Yourself from Breast Cancer What Is Breast Cancer? Breast cancer occurs when the cells in the breast become abnormal and grow out of control to form a tumor. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S. • 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Women age 40 or older should talk with their provider about breast cancer screenings. Exams can detect issues or changes in a woman’s breasts before she notices any symptoms. Know Your Body Get familiar with your body. Watch for any changes that are not normal. It could be a lump or a hard knot. See your doctor right away for a checkup if you notice any changes around your breasts or underarms. Take Steps to Lower Your Risk of Breast Cancer Drink Less Alcohol Limit yourself to one drink per day or less. Eat Better Stay at a healthy weight. Eat fewer high-fat foods and sweets. Eat more vegetables and fruits, and limit red meat. Be Active Walk, jog, swim, or dance. As few as 2 hours of brisk walking per week has been shown to help reduce your risk of breast cancer. Breastfeed If you can, breastfeed your infant for the first year and beyond. Do Not Smoke Quit smoking. Avoid secondhand smoke, especially during childhood, puberty, pregnancy, and when breastfeeding. Quitting Smoking Is Hard, But You Can Do It! Charles B. What Is Breast Cancer?Breast cancer occurs when the cells in the breast become abnormal and grow out of control to form a tumor.

• Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S.
