Peaceful Smiles!
As we begin to reopen during this unprecedented time, I am smiling - taking a few
moments to reflect on what makes me smile and what positive thoughts and images I
can allow into my brain. These are a few of my favourite “July” things:

Message from our Culture Manager
Did you know July is National Blueberry Month?!?!
Blueberry Fun-Facts:
o Ranked number one in antioxidant health o One of the only foods that is truly naturally blue in colour o One of the only commercially-available fruits that are native to North America o A single blueberry bush can produce as many as 6,000 blueberries per year o Canada’s most exported fruit o There are two types of blueberries – highbush and lowbush
o Highbush blueberries are commonly found at grocery stores and farmers markets
o Lowbush blueberries are smaller, sweeter and often used for processing into juices, jams, muffins and cakes
o Blueberries freeze in just 4 minutes
If you enjoy baking – try out the recipe on Page 16 …. and let me know how it goes, I’d
love to hear!! Enjoy!!
Blueberries are just a wonderful summertime fruit….and so good for you! Take a
moment to sit and fully enjoy some blueberries – smell them, really taste them, add
them to a drink or treat. YUMMM!!
Happy July everyone!!

#defeatdepressionchallenge
The Defeat Depression Campaign provides hope and reduces stigma for people who are affected by depression and other mood disorders. Across Canada, mental health organizations, community groups, caring companies and concerned volunteers plan physical and social activities to raise awareness and funds for mental health initiatives. This year, we are so grateful that Defeat Depression has chosen Prosper Place as their charity of choice in Edmonton. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the planned Walk/Run scheduled for May 24, 2020 was changed to a virtual Walk/Run. Each registered participant was encouraged to choose and complete any wellness activity by May 30, 2020 and share this on social media using the hashtag #defeatdpressionchallenge. For my activity, I chose to go on a walk for a minimum of 30 minutes with my family and dog, Daisy.

It’s normal to have low days but it is important that you look after your mental health. Take up the challenge by engaging in a physical activity. It’s been proven that getting your heart rate up releases feel-good endorphins. Start small with little bits of movement throughout the day; a 10-minute walk around your block, some simple yoga stretches…whatever you feel comfortable doing to get moving. Together we can #defeatdepression. Submitted by:

Canadian Heroes
Canada day always makes me think of my father even after all these many years since
his passing. He was a firefighter in the Canadian Air Force. In the 1950’s it was the age
of the Jet fighter that needed jet fuel to fly. As this fuel was very flammable it was the
firefighter’s job to come up with a way to put out the fires quickly when the jets caught
fire. My father, a young man at the time, was part of this team responsible for saving
the lives of the pilots in an emergency. While the team was experimenting with
different chemicals to fight the fires, they did not know they were permanently
damaging their lungs. They eventually did come up with a solution to combat the fires
that is still used today to fight jet fuel fires, it is a mixture of water and aqueous film-
forming foam. My father went on to have a successful career in the military as a
firefighter but lost his final fight at the age of 44 to emphysema caused by the
experiments he worked on. He may not have been shot in a war but he did pay the
ultimate price in his own way for his country. So you see to me, my father and so many
men like him are heroes who put their life on the line so that all of us can enjoy this
great country.
Happy Canada day!

Canada Day Poem
Oh Canada!
True patriot love
Lies within our stars above
Northern lights
Falling in flight
A shooting star
From near or far
To look within Canada’s people
Is to author a story all in your own
So, make it great
Make it true
Patriotic and loving
From you to me
And me to you
