MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

M&M Music Academy has been involved with music tui�on since 2004. Through our experience of working with many long standing and successful students, we have realized the importance of offering a full-�me voca�onal music and performing arts facility for both pre- and post-matric. Pre-matric students overseas, who have access to this training model, have the advantage of accessing their careers at an earlier age.

It is our goal to be able to provide what is available overseas in South Africa at a more affordable rate, while also mee�ng local and interna�onal requirements.

This will be achieved by offering both a local and an interna�onal qualifica�on, backed by strong teaching methods which are taught by industry professionals combined with lots of hands on training.

M&M Music Academy is the Western Cape’s leading music

educa�on provider with the expansion into dance and Musical Theatre.

Providing this through our state-of-the-art facili�es and our industry respected prac��oners who bring a unique mix of professional, academic and real world experience to the classroom. M&M students will have access to the best classroom training, local and interna�onally recognised qualifica�ons, recording sessions, live performance opportuni�es and stage work. The qualifica�ons aim to offer prac�cal and/ or technical structured learning with the flexibility to specialize in different disciplines within both the performing and non-performing fields.

The content of the various pathways is focused on the recogni�on of achievement through performing and crea�ve skills, business skills and technical skills.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

PRACTICAL APPLICATION VOCATIONAL LEVELS 1-3

The concept is both simple and revolutionary: Provide the students with everything they will require to gain understanding and experience across all aspects of the industry. This is career-led educa�on with a ‘business-like’, ‘industry-led’ ethos. Using a seven-pillar approach to obtain the best results from the training, our students will receive the following:

Vibrant and interac�ve classes Live stage performance & event management Produc�on experience in a working studio Course work and examina�on based assessment Prac�cal applica�on Masterclasses Workshops

The students will be involved with many of the day to day ac�vi�es under the guidance of their tutors. We believe there is simply no subs�tute: Students gaining real experience doing real work.

LEVEL 1Throughout the founda�on year we aim to make the students conceptually and technically aware of the process connected to construc�ng a performance. We also aim to unlock certain condi�oned behaviour to increase the range of expression emo�onally, physically and vocally.

LEVEL 2 As our students progress to the second year, they are offered a range of prac�cal opportuni�es to implement the concepts and techniques taught during the founda�on year and to process self-awareness and explore more effec�vely. This process of prac�ce enables the students to shi� from being at founda�on level to intermediate level.

LEVEL 3 By the third year the students have clarified a process of work and this process is automa�cally applied in their approach to their prepara�on. They now begin to consider ‘the other’ in their expression and begin to move into a deeper understanding of music/character and performance level.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP & MENTORSHIP

ENTREPRENEURIAL TRAININGJust like any area of life, braking into the music and performance industry comes with great challenges but also offers excellent rewards. Students will finish this module with ability to:

MENTORSHIPNothing provides be�er mo�va�on and insight than personal interac�on with someone who has already obtained success. Throughout the year we will be invi�ng successful local and interna�onal ar�sts, industry leaders and specialists in business to provide workshops and mentoring for our students. Students will also have the opportunity to perform live on stage with visi�ng ar�sts, which will almost certainly stand out among the highlights of their year.

GuitaristsHaving begun to play guitar, you will now be moving into further/higher educa�on on your instrument. M&M Guitar Grade will not only improve your playing ability, but expand your technical proficiency and give you a solid grasp of music theory – all whilst learning some of the most iconic tracks from the world of popular music

VocalsAn M&M Vocal Grade will not only improve your singing ability, but expand your technical proficiency, grasp of music theory and apprecia�on of some of the most influen�al songs from the past five decades. As a student of music, you will improve your chances in audi�ons and compe��on, whilst eleva�ng your ability to write your own songs in the process.

Piano/KeysThe M&M Piano/Keys syllabus is an essen�al resource for contemporary pianists and keyboard players. Created with the modern musician in mind, it equips all aspiring keyboard players with the knowledge needed to confidently perform within the dynamic world of popular music.

BassAs the glue that holds the band together, M&M understands that no band can groove without a bass player who is fully in control of melody and rhythm. As you progress through your grades, you will expand your technical proficiency, develop a solid comprehension of music theory, and ul�mately understand the basses unique role in the world of popular music

DrumsDrumming demands more than just ‘staying in �me’. The drummer is the driving force, the backbone and the founda�on of the en�re band dynamic. Drummers punctuate, embellish and lead changes in the rhythmic figures of each track. They accentuate a horn sec�on, pick up on guitar riffs, mimic vocal lines and command the rhythm sec�on. Drummers do all this and stay in �me.

Music ProductionOn comple�on of an M&M Music Produc�on Grade, every candidate will own a wealth of technical, prac�cal and theore�cal knowledge that they can apply to real-world scenarios – whether it’s in audio produc�on, electronic music produc�on, mixing, edi�ng, mastering or sound for media.

MUSICAL THEATREThe Musical Theatre Pathway is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, ac�ng and dance. The story and emo�onal content of a musical is humour, pathos, love or anger, and those are communicated through words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole.

With a high standard in dance, ac�ng and singing. We strive in forming “Triple Threats (Dancing, singing and ac�ng)”

Students will take part in dance technique classes, vocal sessions, ac�ng workshops, performance projects and theore�cal sessions led by the Musical Theatre staff.

DANCE (Commercial | Contemporary | Hip Hop) The Dance Pathway is aimed at developing versa�le performers. The students will be trained as young professional dancers, building strength both physically and mentally in a wide range of dance technique classes, and theore�cal sessions.

Exposing the students to all aspects of the performing arts industry including crea�ve, technical, entrepreneurial and administra�ve. Our aim is to produce mul� skilled and highly employable talent. Students will be presented with performance opportuni�es to showcase their skills & talents. They will be placed in small class sizes to ensure effec�ve individual learning and will receive opportuni�es to be crea�ve through guided choreography projects.

PERFORMING ARTS BUSINESS & PRODUCTION

The Performing Arts Business pathway provides non-performers an alterna�ve route towards working in the crea�ve and performing arts industry.

These students will have opportuni�es to demonstrate their skills in other (non-performing) areas of the crea�ve industry, e.g. marke�ng, PR, ar�st development, publishing, set-design, ligh�ng, set construc�on, sound, wardrobe etc as examples.

Th is program exc ludes any grade leve l qualifica�ons but carries the full accredita�on in Level 3 with UCAS points.
