Why choose The Rockhampton Grammar School?

A LETTER FROM OUR HEADMASTER

Dear parents

Thank you for considering placing your child in our trust. Established in 1881, The Rockhampton Grammar School is one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in Australia. Here, more than 1,400 students from all ages and backgrounds are given every opportunity to do their best, every day, in a caring and supportive environment.

Parents, teachers, students and past students become part of the Grammar family from the moment they arrive and remain so, long after they depart. In every way, this is more than a place of learning – this is a family – and one of which we are all proud. Our past students include leading businesspeople, pastoralists, sports stars and medical professionals in Australia and around the world.

If you are thinking of educating your child in Australia, there is no better choice than The Rockhampton Grammar School. The School is large enough to support a diverse and rich curriculum, but small enough to provide individual care and attention for every girl and boy.

Our teachers are exceptional and are recognised for their passion and commitment. We offer outstanding academic results, expertise in STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), and a huge range of extracurricular activities in sport, art, drama, dance, agriculture and outdoor education.

From the moment they arrive from overseas, your boy or girl will be welcomed into our School family. The beautiful grounds will quickly become their home away from home. By the time they leave us, they will have grown in character and scholarship and have acquired excellent English language abilities – an attribute they can use to succeed in any part of the English-speaking world.

We’re proud that Rockhampton Grammar students emerge into society educated, well-rounded and confident, equipped to pursue their ambitions, secure in their sense of self, and armed with the capacity to seize the opportunities and confront the challenges that life will place in their way.

The Rockhampton Grammar School also offers your child ideal preparation for entry into Australia’s world-class G8 universities. Past students have successfully attended universities like the Australian National University, the University of Queensland, the University of Sydney, the University of Melbourne and the University of New South Wales.

While we’re proud of our outstanding academic record, The Rockhampton Grammar School is about more than academic results. Our educational philosophy revolves around the deliberate development of higher order thinking processes, intelligent behaviours and actions, and a dedication to learning throughout life.

The Rockhampton Grammar School’s values of fairness and integrity have been embraced and epitomised by our students and staff since 1881. We are passionate about building the character of our students in all aspects of life and instilling in them a commitment to community service.

We take seriously the challenge of preparing students for tomorrow through balanced academic, sporting, co-curricular and social activities. Our expectation is that every student will seek to do his or her personal best in everything they do. These ideals are expressed in our School motto Macte Virtute Et Litteris or Grow in Character and Scholarship.

It is a philosophy that will be familiar to parents from Asian backgrounds, as it aligns with Confucian ideals of good character, responsibility, respect, service, hard work, fairness and integrity.

We are proud that Rockhampton Grammar students emerge into society educated, well-rounded and confident, equipped to pursue their ambitions, secure in their sense of self, and armed with the capacity to seize the opportunities and confront the challenges that life will place in their way.

We invite you to find out more about us by reading through the following pages. We would be delighted to see you in Australia and hope to welcome you and your child soon. To arrange a visit, please contact the Registrar at [email protected] or +61 7 4936 0700.

Why choose Rockhampton?

Do you dream of an authentic Australian experience for your child? Sunshine, eucalypt-scented air, green pastures, birdsong and unspoiled beaches? These things can be hard to find in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. With rapidly expanding populations, heavy traffic and some of the world’s most expensive schooling and housing, the experience of living in Australia’s biggest cities is not what it used to be.

Don’t despair. The Australia of your dreams still exists in a Central Queensland town called Rockhampton. Founded in 1853 on the banks of the Fitzroy River, the city is celebrated for its wide and quiet streets, British colonial layout, Victorian-era architecture, and its friendly and welcoming community.

You’ve no doubt sampled a tender Australian steak or hoped one day to see Australian animals and birds in their native habitat. Perhaps you’ve dreamed of visiting the world-heritage Great Barrier Reef – the largest and most beautiful coral reef in the world. All of these are available to you from Rockhampton.

With a population of 83,000, the city is big enough to boast modern hospitals, schools, universities, restaurants, art galleries and infrastructure, while being small enough to retain the generosity and hospitality for which Australians – and Queenslanders in particular – are famous.

Far from the smog and bustle of the big cities, there is no pollution in Rockhampton; no skyscrapers or endless streams of traffic. Surrounded by fertile pastureland, family-owned farms and homesteads, national parks, white-sand beaches and coral reefs, Rockhampton is blessed with unspoiled natural beauty. You might compare it with China’s Qinhuangdao, Japan’s Matsushima or Malaysia’s Kuala Terengganu.

Life in Rocky, as the locals call it, will offer your child the opportunity to grow up in an authentic Australian atmosphere. As you walk along the street, you’ll be greeted with a smile and a friendly g’day (hello) by the local community. The city is safe with low crime rates and clean streets. Foreign visitors are made to feel welcome.

Like all Australian cities, Rockhampton is an inclusive and multicultural place. Most residents have British, European or indigenous Australian backgrounds, but a growing proportion of the population comes from China, India, Sri Lanka, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Here, you and your child can experience and study Australian history first-hand. The town’s architecture is some of the best preserved in Australia, with elegant public buildings and Victorian-era churches, post offices, banks, stores and homesteads.

Grow in character and scholarship

School years should be a golden age for children, a time when they learn who they are, what they can do, and how to succeed in society. That’s why choosing the right primary and secondary education for your child is so important.

The Rockhampton Grammar School has a reputation that extends throughout Australia. For over 130 years, the School has produced outstanding men and women who have been guided by the Latin motto, Macte Virtute Et Litteris, or Grow in Character and Scholarship.

These are not merely words. They animate the spirit of everything for which the School stands. Students are offered a multi-faceted education based not only on academics, but also on the expectation that they will participate in co-curricular activities, sport and community service. The rounded nature of the student experience makes our School the most sought-after in Central Queensland.

As an overseas parent, you can be confident The Rockhampton Grammar School is the right choice for your child’s long-term future. To provide an ideal English language environment for overseas students, the School has a relatively low number of foreign students, especially when compared with other elite schools in Australia. Our students are predominantly local, which means your child will improve his or her English language ability quickly.

Far away from the distractions of the big city – in the tranquil, green environment of Central Queensland – he or she will study quietly, develop areas of personal interest, take full advantage of the School’s extensive resources, and make lifelong friends with Australian students.

On coming to an unfamiliar country and study environment, what happens if there is a problem in study life and even physical and psychological health? This is a common source of concern for parents when selecting a school.

In this context, The Rockhampton Grammar School has another advantage when compared with other private schools – we provide complete support for each student. If there is anything the student does not understand, a teacher will patiently explain it after class. If there is a problem with your child’s English language abilities, a specialist English teacher can provide additional language support.

If someone is not feeling well or has a fall, the student can be examined any time at the health centre where there is hospital-level care. If a student is feeling pressured by their studies or is feeling homesick, the School’s full-time psychologist is able to provide counselling.

The following pages will explore the advantages of The Rockhampton Grammar School in greater depth. We will cover:

• the campus environment and co-curricular facilities

• accommodation and campus life

• a week in the life of one of our boarders

• outstanding academic achievement

• positive education

• community service

• how to enrol

“The School means a lot to me. Everyone is so friendly. There is no segregation between groups. I think that’s different from other schools. There’s a lot of students here to help new students. No matter where you come from, you’re never alone.”

“With 36 different activities and sports on offer, the extra-curricular options available to our students are second-to-none. Each weekend, from a boarder’s perspective,

The School also owns and operates a nearby property catering for the School’s growing agricultural studies and show cattle team, a rowing facility on the Fitzroy River and a beach-front education centre – known as Ritamada – located on the Capricorn Coast, just outside Emu Park.

Ritamada, the School’s outdoor education campus, takes students away from the routine of the classroom and extends the curriculum into the great outdoors. Surrounded by green hills and coral-filled seas, they learn valuable life skills and self-confidence in a safe and stimulating environment. The 82-hectare property was bequeathed to the School by Robert Mackay Brown in 1971.

Activities ranging from high ropes to sea kayaking, surfing and adventure caving are conducted within a “challenge by choice” philosophy and an atmosphere of encouragement, support and fun. All students spend time at Ritamada during the school year as part of the pastoral care program. Classrooms are located on site, where students can reinforce their field studies of marine biology and oceanography.

Opened in 1994, the School’s 50-metre Olympic swimming pool continues to delight teachers and students alike. Swimming training, lessons and sports such as water polo are available to all students, whatever their level of swimming ability. Qualified staff are always present to ensure student safety. At the shallow end of the pool, an overhead shade canopy cuts down direct exposure from the sun.

The School’s Rowing Club is a world-standard facility located on the Fitzroy River. The Club provides a function room upstairs and a storage and canteen facility downstairs for rowing regattas. The Club also boasts a deck overlooking the finish line and a function room that can cater for 200 people – it has even hosted the Australian Rowing Team.

Developed in 2008, the School gymnasium is fully equipped to allow students to train for their individual sporting pursuits. The gymnasium has areas for machine weights and free weights and a specific room for cardio workouts. Individual and team gym programs are used to ensure the safe and guided development of both boys and girls. The timetable for the gymnasium is designed to have separate male, female and staff training times.

The Rockhampton Grammar School has extensive and professionally manicured ovals and sporting fields, where girls and boys train and compete in athletics, soccer, rugby league, rugby union, Australian rules football, handball and cricket.

The School also features a beach volleyball court for physical education classes, tennis courts, and four astro-turf cricket pitches. A state-of-the-art air-conditioned multi-purpose hall caters for indoor sports such as basketball, netball, futsal, badminton, volleyball and table tennis. The Rockhampton Grammar School is proud of its elite partnerships with professional teams and peak sporting bodies such as the North Queensland Cowboys rugby league team, Queensland Cricket and Rowing Queensland.

The School’s agricultural program and show cattle team maintain and run the School’s demonstration farm, just a few minutes’ drive away from the main campus. With cattle, alpacas, sheep, chickens, fruit trees, cotton and coffee, the farm is a home away from home for the many boarding students. Here, students are taught agriculture as a system; including how to master the latest in agricultural technology and how to manage supply chains and contracts.

The School has exclusive access to Belmont Station, a cattle property with Fitzroy River frontage only 25 minutes from town. The station doubles as a world-class research facility (it was established by the CSIRO in 1953), with classrooms where students learn about the selective breeding of Belmont Red, Brahman and Senepol cattle. Boys and girls are given the opportunity to weigh, tag and mark calves after birth. Cattle are cared for in accordance with the highest standards in animal welfare.

Our students graduate with practical skills, hands-on knowledge, industry experience, and respect and love for the land that provides them with strong foundations for lifelong learning, development and advancement in agri-business and rural industries.

The Rockhampton Grammar School Dance and Musical Theatre Academy (DMTA), provides boys and girls aged from 3 years, a unique opportunity to combine academic and dancing pursuits. Girls and boys can pursue their academic studies alongside dance, vocal and drama lessons.

Featuring fully qualified, experienced and talented staff, the Academy has three professional dance studios featuring fully sprung Harlequin Cascade Dance Floors, frameless wall mirrors and professional dance barres and sound systems in air-conditioned comfort, as well as a professional theatre with seating.

“The responsibility to take care of students in their youth is very great, to be sure that they tread the right road, and face the right direction; at the same time not to educate them excessively, not to influence the desire of the young to be happy: they have the right to be happy.”

– Henry Arthur Kellow, Headmaster, 1912-1935

PICTURE OF BOARDING ROOMS

Accommodation and campus life

The Rockhampton Grammar School is Queensland’s largest boarding school. Boarders comprise more than a third of secondary school student enrolment and boarding has formed the core of the School since its founding in 1881.

The School provides full accommodation for students from Years 7 to 12. Boarders share air-conditioned accommodation with live-in supervisors who are on hand 24 hours a day to make sure your child has everything he or she needs and is supported through personal and academic challenges. As a parent, you will always be warmly received and be kept up-to-date with how your child is doing.

Male and female students live in separate buildings, which are serviced daily by professional cleaners. Every boarding house has spacious common rooms and entertainment areas, as well as washrooms, laundries and kitchens. Students reside in two-person or four-person rooms. Individual rooms are arranged for Year 12 students, who are studying for their final examinations and need their own space.

Boarders come from many different regions of Queensland, Australia and overseas. Boarding life will provide your child with opportunities to befriend Australian children of the same age. This will improve their English language ability and help them acquire a deep understanding of Western etiquette and Australian culture.

The School and dormitory buildings are covered by a wireless network (WIFI) which students can use for instant messaging, phone and video conversation with their families.

Fresh and nutritious meals are provided in the dining hall by our own full-time caterers. The School can also cater to children with special dietary requirements. The menu is different each day. Options at a typical breakfast might include bread, fresh fruit, spaghetti, baked beans, boiled eggs, fried mushrooms, tomatoes, bacon, pancakes, juice, milk, tea and coffee.

Outstanding academic achievement

OP or Overall Position ranking is a weighting in the Queensland final high school examinations, divided into 1 to 25 grades. Grade 1 ranking – 2 per cent of students – can be admitted into virtually any specialist field in the best universities in Australia.

The final high school examination is described differently in each Australian state. In New South Wales, for example, the high school examination is called the Higher School Certificate (HSC), while in Queensland the examination is referred to as ‘comprehensive Ranking OP (Overall Position)’. From 2020, Queensland will shift to the same model as NSW and Victoria, meaning senior examination results will be standardised across all three states.

The School’s outstanding teachers are the key reason for this academic success. All of our staff nurture the development of a global education culture focused on the benefits of globalisation, technology and cultural diversity.

Our teachers are also able to develop a deeper understanding of their role as educators and mentors because they themselves are lifelong learners. This is evidenced by the fact that The Rockhampton Grammar School offers a unique Master of Education to all teachers from Griffith University – the only program of its kind in Australia.

The degree enhances teacher effectiveness, student engagement and student performance. Upon completion of the degree, teachers are better prepared to equip students with the skills and resilience they need to contribute to and succeed in an ever-changing and globalised world.

The Rockhampton Grammar School consistently earns the best overall results among other schools in the Central Queensland region annually. Over a third of Year 12 students obtain the ‘1-5 OP comprehensive ranking’, which generally allows them to take up university placements in highly competitive courses across Australia – including law, medicine, engineering and information technology.

“This School is special because of our community and culture, which is based on supporting, helping and encouraging one another. That’s just how we are.”

– Hannah Woods, School Captain, 2018

“In the first month after arriving at the School, I was really worried and there was a lot of pressure on me. Everything had to be expressed in English and I couldn’t understand a lot of what the teacher said. After class, the teacher patiently explained to me the things that I did not understand in class, until I understood. When I went back to the dormitory, students there also helped me very much. The teachers are very good. When you don’t understand, they will explain things to you until you do.”

– Wu Zhuoqian, Year 11 student from Hong Kong

Positive education

The Rockhampton Grammar School espouses positive education, an educational philosophy based on the principle of students “feeling good and doing good”. Positive education is not solely aimed at maximising happiness, although happiness is a component of the process. It’s about encouraging girls and boys to develop an abiding sense of well-being.

This means fostering a growth mindset in students by emphasising the idea that the mind can and should grow. It doesn’t punish failure. Instead, it views a setback as an opportunity to learn by reinterpreting the experience to gain a new perspective. Positive education is also consistent with School policies and programmes that ensure practical student safety, security and wellbeing for all students.

Key themes within positive education include:

• Positive engagement: reinforcing the idea that the most fulfilling moments in life come from times when students are voluntarily pushed to their limit to achieve something meaningful and difficult.

• Positive emotions: savouring good things when they happen and doing good for others and society. Developing a sense of wonder and taking time to reflect on the beauty of the natural world.

• Positive relationships: promoting social and emotional skills to develop a sense of self-worth and the ability to form lasting relationships with others.

• Positive health: fostering resilience to allow students to overcome adversity, take calculated risks, and make the most of opportunities as they arise.

• Positive purpose: cultivating altruism and compassion in students and encouraging them to believe in something greater than themselves.

“Positive education is about teaching children how to deal

with change, how to manage their physical and mental health, and how to contribute to society. It’s

about setting the groundwork for a lifetime of learning and living well.”

– Dr Phillip Moulds, Headmaster

Community service

Related to the principle of positive education is the idea that community service leads to happier, more rounded students. Education at The Rockhampton Grammar School has always extended beyond facts and figures. Students who are actively connected to the School and the wider community learn the social and emotional skills they need to succeed in later life.

Whether raising funds through a sausage sizzle to support the Cancer Council, donating their time at the local retirement village or travelling to Nepal or Borneo to lend a helping hand in constructing a hospital, our young men and women are proud to make a difference in their community.

They are rewarded in return through the development of their character, leadership skills, courage and integrity. Among the School’s Community partnerships are Round Square (a global organisation of schools that promotes universal values) and Reef Guardians programmes.

How to enrol

For overseas students joining us in Year 7, there are no academic prerequisites except basic English and the right attitude to learning. As Australian Government policy does not permit overseas students to go directly into Year 12, overseas students must enrol at The Rockhampton Grammar School no later than Year 11.

The Australian Government requires overseas students to purchase Overseas Student Health Cover: http://www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/content/overseas+student+health+cover+faq-1 For more information on overseas student policy and visas, please visit http://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/Trav/Stud

“I’ve been here a long time. I’ve seen people change and mature. There’s an attitude that this is not just a school. It teaches us how to be good people. Whether you join in Year 7 or 11, you’re a Grammarian for life.”

– Annabel Flockhart, School Vice-Captain, 2018
