Welcome from Tony KnowlesPrincipal, Xaverian College

06 The Xaverian Mission We are a Catholic College dedicated to the development of the whole person, providing outstanding educational opportunities for young people from Catholic High Schools in and around Manchester and for students from many other schools in the Manchester area.

We aim to help students to develop as people who strive for the highest possible standards in all aspects of their lives as happy, useful and successful members of society, and who combine success with service to others in both their personal and working lives.

To achieve this we will:Maintain a Christian environment which is purposeful and fulfilling

Value all members of the College Community equally

Promote excellence in teaching and learning

Have the very highest expectations of all our students

Offer appropriate choices, guidance, support, and facilities

From the Student Council I am an A2 student studying; Government and Politics, History, Law and English Language. I am also the Student Governor and attend all Governing Body meetings.

When I started looking around at colleges in my final year in high school, I had no idea what to expect. I had many questions and was not sure which environment was best for me. Upon visiting Xaverian during an open day I was amazed at its open plan surroundings. The college offers old, historic buildings coupled with modern, contemporary infrastructure which gives you a great breadth of environments to learn in.

Just like most people reading this, I wanted to know how the college could benefit me and what I could get out of my time here.

When visiting and during taster days it was evident that the teachers were excellent and would really get the best out of me academically. Whilst studying at Xaverian this has become even more apparent, as the teachers offer great support and the Wednesday support sessions offer one to one advice that is invaluable, particularly around exam season.

Not only that, the college has given me numerous opportunities to enhance my experiences including speaking on the topic of democracy in the House of Commons in one of the historic committee rooms. Every student has opportunities to gain experience in their relevant fields of study which is perfect for CV’s and Personal Statements as well as being significant life experiences.

Even if prospective students do not wish to attend university after college life, Xaverian is still the perfect option as it mixes independence with carefully supervised teaching and pastoral support.

The broad array of course subjects on offer enables every prospective student to choose those they are most interested in. Learning is always entertaining and captivating which allows all of us students to get the best out of our learning.

“ I highly recommend choosing Xaverian to continue your education for the next two years. It was certainly the best decision for me and I’m sure it is the best decision for all of you reading this and I look forward to seeing you around college soon.”

Sam Marshall

A very warm welcome to Xaverian. We are delighted that you are considering joining us to continue your education.

There are many reasons why I feel Xaverian is an outstanding college, but first and foremost is our commitment to supporting you to develop intellectually, spiritually and socially. We are very proud of our established reputation for delivering academic success which was recognised by Ofsted when the college was graded “outstanding in all areas”. Ofsted inspectors continue to strongly endorse the work of the college. During a survey of best practice, they said:

“ The college has an all-pervasive ‘can do’ culture. Very committed and well-trained staff have high expectations of all their students. The college ethos is exceptional... It is immediately apparent that Xaverian is a college with values that are lived and breathed. This is definitely a college which role models outstanding practice.”

In August 2016 our students celebrated yet another year of excellent results with many students achieving high grades in both A-Level subjects and applied courses. My colleagues and I continually strive to support our students to progress successfully to higher education, apprenticeships and employment.

The Xaverian campus is very similar to that of a university. The college, however, remains a very close knit community in order to offer personalised pastoral care and support. Through this we aim to develop your confidence and independence. Above all Xaverian is a true community, and students at the college can expect support from teachers, progress tutors, careers advisors, college counsellors and many others throughout their time here. Ofsted inspectors commented that:

“ The college’s mission to develop the whole student underpins the extremely high priority given to pastoral support … which helps students stay at college and achieve outstanding results.”

I hope that through exploring our website and prospectus, you will gain valuable information to enable you to progress to the Sixth Form College of your choice. I would be delighted to welcome you at one of our Open Days, when you can explore and get to know the college, meet with all of our wonderful staff, past and current students, and discuss with them your needs and ambitions. I am sure that you will see what a purposeful, caring and above all successful community we are and that you will decide to join us in the next, very important step in your journey in life.

I look forward to meeting you.

Mr Tony Knowles

“ I don’t think there is any sixth form college like Xaverian in the Greater Manchester area. It has a ‘university style’ freedom to it which is perfect preparation for university.“ Sam Marshall Student Council

At Xaverian College we want to ensure that all students have the opportunity to fully develop their abilities so that when they leave us, students will have the skills to flourish in University and the world beyond.

How do we do this? 1. The Tutorial Programme

For students who have been particularly successful at their GCSEs we have some specialised tutor groups that are focussed on developing the high level critical skills and the application of knowledge and ideas, in unusual and new circumstances, that are seen as desirable by top universities. You will meet your tutor twice weekly and will focus on your problem solving skills, your ability to argue and your cultural capital. How well do you know the world around you? How can you find out about it? These are the kind of questions we will address.

2. Subject Support

In all curriculum areas, support is there to provide you with the skills and the focus you need to achieve an A*. In many areas there are specific groups that meet regularly that are aiming to get the top grade and are working together to achieve this. The crucial thing here is for students to stop seeing their subject as something that happens in the classroom but something that happens in the real world.

3. The Extended Project Qualification

One of the best ways to develop the research skills and qualities that are so desired by universities is to take an EPQ. This year at Xaverian we have 80 students taking this qualification. In this recognised AS level you select a topic that you are interested in, you embark on rigorous academic research into that topic and you write an extended report on what you have learned. Recent EPQs attempted by students have attempted to answer such weird and wonderful questions as:

How far can epigenetics explain the differences in identical twins?

How important were women to the Beat Poetry movement?

How significant was religion to the lives of the Etruscans? All students that undertake this considerable task at the beginning of the second year of A level, talk about how rewarding it has been. Achieving a good grade in the EPQ is a really effective way of demonstrating that you are self-sufficient learner.

4. Preparation for Top Universities

Xaverian has many links with top universities. Last year over 50 students were offered places at some of the top 20 universities in the world – from Oxford and Cambridge to Imperial College, London. We have a programme of events designed to guide students through the process and encourage them to aim high in their expectaions. These have included in the last year:

Workshop from an Admissions Tutor from St Catherine’s College, Cambridge

Workshop with students from Pembroke College, Oxford

Summer Schools at Pembroke College, Oxford and Manchester University

Residential visits to both Oxford and Cambridge. Our links with the Cambridge Languages Centre and our role as a Hub for the Pembroke College Oxford has provided students with many opportunities to engage with these institutions, so that their applications for all universities can be as strong as possible.

“ There is only one 21st century skill – the ability to act intelligently when faced with a situation for which you have not been specifically prepared.” Seymour Papert

A higher proportion of our students go on to top Russell Group universities than the national average. Our High Achievers’ programme is preparing students for these applications and the subsequent transition.

Cambridge Languages Project.

As part of a national incentive to increase participation in Modern Languages, Cambridge University is establishing language hubs around the country to develop and encourage language learning.

Xaverian College was chosen as the link centre for the North West Widening Participation for Languages Project, based on years of excellent A-level results with traditional language subjects, and also as a result of a healthy alternative languages programme (where students are encouraged to take examinations in their native language). Xaverian College was the obvious college to deliver the project aims.

The language project entailed 80 good linguists from year 9 and year 12 chosen from schools and colleges in and around Manchester. These students were invited to Xaverian and embarked on language learning sessions, taught by Cambridge staff with the aim of increasing uptake at both GCSE and A-level.

Not only were traditional languages the focus during these sessions, but students were given the opportunity to experiment with more unusual languages, such as Japanese or Czech.

Staff from Cambridge University led and taught the sessions and Xaverian will be the hub college for the continuation of this project.

Working with Top Universities

14

Xaverian College is part of OXNET which is a nationwide subject enrichment partnership led by Oxford University. The college’s main role is to run the Greater Manchester hub of the North West Science Network in conjunction with Corpus Christi College and Pembroke College (Oxford) and South Cheshire College (Crewe). This network aims to engage students from the North West with research-level science designed to further equip them for application and entry into Higher Education and spark their interest in STEM topics they are otherwise unlikely to study.

Our NWSN annual programme consists of twilight science lectures, lab visits and maths/science summer schools. This year students have enjoyed lectures from a range of Russell Group university academics on a range of topics such as Cognitive Psychology, Dark Energy, Artificial Intelligence and Neuroscience. Students also met a wide range of STEM PHD students at our STEM fair to learning about a range of research fields.

OXNET offers partnership schools and colleges access to a range of subject enrichment opportunities. This year Xaverian College has taken part in workshops led by the Orwell Youth Prize, the Pembroke North Theology & Humanities lecture programme and students have secured places on the competitive Pembroke North Theology & Humanities Enlightenment programme.

“ The Psychology twilight lecture on Cognition was very insightful. I thought it was interesting to see why people think certain things about themselves.” Psychology twilight lecture attendee

“ I had the opportunity to talk to research scientists at the Daresbury laboratory and learn about the cutting edge technology that is used at this facility. I have an interest in quantum computing so I registered to attend the next open day at Daresbury when there will be a demonstration of the supercomputer.” Daresbury lab visit attendee

“ This experience has confirmed my decision to go to university and my view on Oxford has changed quite a lot based on this experience. The university seems a lot more approachable now that I understand the college system and application process. I am considering selecting Oxford as one of my choices for university.” Summer school attendee

Xaverian College has an outstanding reputation in Manchester – much of this is built upon the partnerships established with universities, employers and other institutions throughout the country. We are also proud to be a member of MANCEP – the Manchester Catholic Education Partnership.

We are currently the hub college for two exciting projects in Science and Languages.

“ The best thing about Xaverian is the friendly teachers that support you with your course and actually really care about you doing well.” Justice Awuah St Peter’s High School

What canI study?

18

At Xaverian you can choose from over 40 advanced level subjects, taught by highly qualified and passionate staff. All our subjects have excellent success rates.

My Programme of StudyThis just means all the different parts of your timetable at Xaverian. Most students think that college is just about the subjects you take, but at Xaverian there is a lot more to it than that. As well as your courses:

You will be part of a tutor group with about 20 other students. You will meet for tutorial once a week, and for another slot – called learning skills – for another hour.

You will have an R.E. lesson with your tutor group. This is a non-examined subject, with the focus on debate and discussion.

There are opportunities to take part in a wide range of activities and enrichment. Some of this takes place on Wednesday afternoon, but also throughout the college day, and after college.

You will be able to take part in Work Experience. This may be part of your course, but many students are opting for some work experience to enhance their CV. We have an Employability Engagement Team who will help you.

Some students take extra qualifications such as the EPQ, or a foreign language.

You can access expert subject support and extension lessons. All our teachers are timetabled for two hours of open-access support throughout the week, and there are many extra sessions run on Wednesdays.

You can get extra support through our Learning Support staff. This is for students with specific learning issues, but also for students who just need a little help in how to study.

All students have independent study time and are able to access study areas all around college, but especially in the Ryken Study Centre.

You will get expert – and award-winning – careers advice so that you can progress to university, apprenticeship or employment.

Advanced Level CoursesAdvanced Level courses are A-Levels or BTECs.

A-Levels are studied for two years and at the end of the course you will receive an A-Level qualification that is highly regarded by universities and employers. Most students study three, and A-Levels are graded from A* to E.

BTECs require you to take several units over a 2 year course, and can be equivalent to up to 3 A-Level passes. They are graded as Distinction, Merit or Pass.

Changes to A-Levels You will be starting college at a time when there have been changes to how A-Levels are assessed. All A-Levels are now linear, with exams taken at the end of two years of study. This is very similar to the GCSE system you have been following. These A-Levels will be highly rigorous in their assessment and you will take regular standardised assessments as well as mock exams to prepare you for your final exams.

We will advise you on the best courses for your programme of study, helping you choose the A-Levels that suit your needs best.

It should be noted that the College curriculum offer is subject to change at any time as a result of the ongoing A level reform process. For further information, please watch for regular updates to our website.

Level 2 ProgrammeWe offer a range of GCSE qualifications and level 2 BTEC courses. These include core re-sits in English, Maths and Science and BTECs in Business and Sport. It may be possible to take a GCSE alongside your advanced level study, if there is a specific need.

Foundation Level courseThis is an entry level course for students with few prior qualifications, and is designed to equip you with essential skills before moving on to further study at level 2 or into employment. Xaverian students have progressed from foundation, through level 2 and advanced level, and to university.

MusicXaverian has a well-deserved reputation as the finest Sixth Form Music department in Greater Manchester.

The college offers great opportunities in Music, whether you choose to study it or not.

The Music department has over 35 ensembles, and has an outstanding orchestra with over 110 musicians and a fabulous choir with over 110 singers. There are also a large number of impressive chamber ensembles e.g. chamber orchestra, big band, studio orchestra, flute group, clarinet group, saxophone group, string group, brass group, jazz band, chamber choir, percussion group, and many rock bands.

Students are encouraged to take an active role in these musical activities and to form and direct their own ensembles. Students will develop the ability to rehearse and direct their very own groups.

There are three major concerts a year for full Orchestra and among other activities are Xaverian’s Young Musician of the Year Competition and a Young Composer of the Year.

All our A-level musicians take part, as well as many other students who also join in through their enrichment.

Xaverian and the RNCMXaverian has long-standing links with The Royal Northern College of Music.

RNCM staff and students regularly come into Xaverian College to run master classes and workshops on how to perform, do interviews, how to practice, and how to do auditions for music college and university; this includes classical and pop music courses. We recently performed a concert at the RNCM with the Junior RNCM and leading professional musicians. RNCM composition students write commissioned works for Xaverian Ensembles and Xaverian students perform in RNCM recitals.

If you want to play music – Xaverian is the college for you.

“ The college’s approach to inclusion is outstanding. The caring Catholic ethos is central to the life of the college and provides an environment where students of all cultures and beliefs can thrive and achieve well.” (Ofsted)

Religious EducationAll of our students get to take part in R.E. Sessions are inspiring and fun opportunities to debate and create with your fellow students and teachers. These lessons provide a rare opportunity to share different ideas and beliefs in a stimulating and safe environment and to take a break from your academic studies, as there are no exams at the end of this course.

Celebrating our CommunityThe Xaverian Community is steeped in a rich history and its ethos is deeply rooted in Spirituality and inclusion. There are around 2,300 students and staff, who over the course of the year, take place in numerous activities and charitable events, to further their personal education as well as their academic.

We believe that our students’ personal, moral and spiritual growth is just as important as the grades they achieve.

Student AmbassadorsStudents can do their part for the community in many ways, one particular way is through our ambassador scheme. Students apply for the role during their first year with us and represent the college throughout the year, working with students and visitors during our Open Days, Taster Days, Parents’ Conferences and many more events. Many of our students also act as subject ambassadors, visiting high schools to promote their subjects.

The ChaplaincyThe Chapel of St. Anne and the Chaplaincy Social Area lie at the heart of the Xaverian College Campus and seek to accompany every Xaverian member on your spiritual journey.

Our community is inclusive of all faiths and aims to positively impact the wider community. Our full-time Chaplain helps to facilitate good works that meet the need of social justice in local, national and international issues.

Students and staff alike are encouraged to get involved in good deeds throughout the year such as our Lourdes Pilgrimage, the Senior Citizens’ Christmas and Summer Parties, the Christmas Toy Appeal, the Congo Appeal and donations to Cornerstone.

Community DayCommunity Day is set aside for us to celebrate all that is special in our college. Students are given the day off-timetable and participate in a variety of events and activities, coming together as a community simply to have fun. This year’s event included up to 40 activities including loads of sports, a climbing wall, zorbing, live music and an amazing bouncy castle.

How do I apply to Xaverian?

30

At Xaverian College we understand that the process of applying to college can be a daunting one. We have made the application process as simple as possible and packed the year with many opportunities for you to visit the college and ask questions about your courses.

When should I apply? The college is always over-subscribed and it is advisable to apply early. The closing date for applications is Friday January 20th 2017.

Where can I get an application form? The best place to get one is directly from Xaverian on an Open Day, and you can also download one from our website. You will also be able to get one from your own school.

What do I fill in? The application will ask you for contact details, courses you are interested in studying, and a personal statement. When you have completed the form hand it in to your school. They will complete a reference and forward it to us.

What will happen then? If you are offered a place, the college will invite you to a course consultation. These will take place between January and March and are a very good opportunity for you to discuss your future and find out about the college.

Do not worry if you are still uncertain about which subjects to study. We ask you to indicate your likely subjects, but you will confirm your final choices at an enrolment interview in August, once you have received your GCSE results.

Who can apply? We welcome applications from all students who wish to follow their education in a Christian environment and who support the ethos of the college.

If you attend a Catholic school or if you are a Catholic studying at another school, we should be able to offer you a place, providing you apply in good time and we can agree suitable courses. If you attend another school, you are recommended to apply before the deadline.

All applications are considered, and the college will look at suitability for our courses, personal statements and supportive references from your school to help inform our decision.

Do I need to have studied a subject at GCSE to study it at A Level? Some A-Level courses require you to have studied that subject at GCSE but this is not the case for every single subject. Further information can be found on individual course leaflets which can be downloaded from the college website or you can pick them up on our Open Days.

What is the course consultation like? The interview is very informal; we will discuss your career aspirations, predicted GCSE results, choice of subjects and entry requirements.

What’s the typical timetable?

All students study full-time at Xaverian. The college day starts at 9.00 and ends at 4.00pm with a break in the morning and an hour for lunch. There is an enrichment session on Wednesday afternoons. You will also have independent study periods and will attend sessions with your Progress Tutor.

Can I change the subjects I’ve applied for?

Yes, the subject choices you give at your preliminary interview can be changed. We ask that this be done by July to help our planning, but we may be able to provide course changes at enrolment in cases where your GCSE results differ from your predicted grades or if an alternative course is not already full and you have met the entry requirements for this subject. Our admissions team will be on hand to help you make the right choice for you.

September 2016Prospectus and application forms are available. We will begin visiting schools with a presentation about Xaverian, and you will be able to see us in schools at Careers Events and Parents’ Evenings.

October 2016Come to our Open Days on Saturday 8th and Sunday 16th to find out about subjects, meet students, and experience our unique atmosphere.

November 2016Fill in application forms and hand them into your school. They will be passed onto us here at Xaverian.

December 2016You can access information on all the courses we offer next year from the college website.

May 2017Good luck with your GCSE Exams this month!

March 2017You should have had your consultation at Xaverian and received confirmation of your place.

February 2017Course consultations will continue to take place throughout the Spring Term.

January 2017Closing date for applications is Friday 20th January. Our course consultations start. Don’t worry – these are informal occasions where we will discuss with you your course options, and advise you on your provisional choices for September.

June 2017Exams are over, so come to our New Students’ Day - it’s your opportunity to find out more about the college and try out subjects you are interested in.

July 2017Come along to an Information Evening with your parents to find out what to expect when you enrol.

August 2017Get your results and enrol at Xaverian. Obtain access to the Xaverian intranet. Visit our website for up-to-date information on what is happening at the college. Our latest results will be out!

Everyone really cares about you but at the same time the freedom you get really helps you develop as an individual, 2 years goes so quick!

I’ve had a great couple of years and I hope to come out with good grades. If I’d have gone to a different college I don’t think I’d have followed the path I have and it’s definitely turned out for the better.

Olivia Moinuddin, Knutsford College

I have enjoyed the freedom and independence, especially in comparison to high school and other colleges. The atmosphere is good. There is always support available to help you achieve what you want.

Maryam Watson, Loreto High School

I have enjoyed the umph and passion that teachers bring to their well planned, well-executed lessons. Grace Crawford, Stretford Grammar School

Daisy Brocklehurst, Ashton on Mersey School

I learnt more about myself and became more confident. In fact I barely recognise who I was before. I was so shy but my friends are like family now.

I have loved learning at Xaverian, the environment has sparked a real love for my subjects and so I have worked hard independently because of my developed passion.

Students love our campus! Remodelled over the last few years, it offers students an outstanding learning environment.

A campus transformedThe Xaverian campus has undergone major changes in recent years. Starting with Ryken, the last twelve years have seen a series of major buildings and refurbishments that have transformed the Xaverian campus while maintaining the essential character of the site. Mayfield building, the redevelopment of the student common room and Birtles are the most obvious changes, but throughout the campus structural alterations and equipment changes have ensured that Xaverian remains what it is – an outstanding college with first-class facilities for its students.

Ward HallWork has just begun on the latest development to the Xaverian Campus – a £1.2 million extension to Ward Hall, one of the college’s oldest and most popular buildings.

Originally built in the 19th Century, Ward Hall has been owned by the college for over 60 years, and because of its listed status any redevelopment has had to retain the essential character of the building – something the college also insists on. In 2014 the college opened an annexe that enhanced the character and completed the look of that part of the campus.

The inside of Ward Hall was remodelled, including developing the huge cellar space, with original features retained. The annexe to the building houses our school of Art, Media and Design, and now the new extension will offer the college the opportunity to grow more subjects to match the increasing popularity of Xaverian for students around Greater Manchester.
