Lincoln University’s Telford Campus is one of New Zealand’s largest land-based vocational training providers, located just five minutes from Balclutha in the heart of South Otago.

With access to 921 hectares of farmland, a 20-hectare campus, including halls of residence, workshops, gymnasium, library and laboratory, Telford provides a training environment that is unrivalled anywhere in New Zealand.

Telford’s programmes are designed to give students hands-on training through real-world experience with a specialised blend of theoretical and practical elements to enhance core learning. Class numbers are small, ensuring all students receive the care and attention they need to achieve the requirements of their chosen course of study.

Telford has a longstanding reputation for producing well-rounded highly sought after graduates. Whether Agriculture (sheep, dairy, beef, deer), Equine, Farming (Dairy), Forestry, Apiculture (beekeeping) or as a Rural Veterinary Technician, our graduate employment success rate is high, with many of our students offered full-time positions before they have even finished their studies.

Aside from their studies, students have easy access to some of the very best outdoor adventure areas New Zealand has to offer. Telford is located on the perimeter of the famous Catlins, a remote but magnificent part of the south coast that includes wild surf beaches, native forests and unbelievable landscapes perfect for students interested in hunting and fishing. The student town of Dunedin is only a short drive, and the winter snow of Queenstown and Wanaka is just over three hours away.

Note: The Certificate in Apiculture (Level 3) is delivered in Kaitaia, in the North Island.

Residential Assistants (RA) complement this mix. To be eligible for RA selection students should hold a full drivers licence and be prepared to provide peer support.

We also provide: • Sky TV, DVD player and wi-fi

Nurse on campus Natalie Clark, is a registered nurse, based in the clinic on campus. She is available part-time for medical treatment, mental health support and assessments. Students may be referred on to other services if necessary. Our nurse is available with a listening ear to ensure students get the most out of their time at Telford.

Literacy and numeracy supportIt’s important that all students can cope with the reading, writing and maths in their courses at Telford. Some students need extra support in this area and the friendly Student Support team of Lorraine Moffat and Jan Johnstone are there to help.

We assess the reading, writing and maths levels of our students so that we can provide the right help as soon as possible. (Don’t be put off by this – there is no pass or fail, and the assessments are straightforward).

We offer the following support:

• Students who struggle with reading or have dyslexia are placed on a speed-reading programme with in-class support. We find this greatly improves their ability to cope in the classroom and to graduate

• Speech recognition software – speak into a microphone and the computer writes for you

• Every student has access to vocabulary software to help students revise specialist words, and Read Write Gold

• Reader/writer assistance.

Hostel ManagerHostel and after hours student supervision is the responsibility of Daniel Maze. Student interaction and rapport are his top priorities, making sure students’ needs are met in terms of their physical environment, with behaviour being closely monitored. Familiarity with the assessment timetable ensures wrap around support.

Student loansGovernment-funded student loans can help finance your study, but to receive a loan you must be a New Zealand citizen or have had permanent resident status for at least two years.

There are three parts to a student loan:

• Course fees

• Course-related costs

• Living costs.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for a full interest write-off. For more detailed information about loans, please refer to www.studylink.govt.nz. If you have questions of a more general nature, Telford’s administration team may be able to help you.

Student allowancesStudent allowances provide a weekly payment for full-time students to help pay halls of residence fees and day-to-day living costs. You don’t have to pay back your allowance, but to qualify you must meet specific criteria. For more information, please refer to www.studylink.govt.nz.

Payment of fees and accommodationTuition fees, bonds and student fees must be paid in full at the start of your study.

Halls of residence payments are to be made in advance for each term. Alternative payment arrangements may be organised from Terms Two to Four by contacting Telford’s administration team before study begins.

A list of tuition fees and halls of residence charges will be sent to you along with the Student Handbook, after your enrolment has been accepted.

Weekend workMany students find weekend work in a wide range of areas, including relief milking, casual contracting, or within other businesses in the Clutha District. Part-time work will help supplement your loans/allowances.

“My advice to anyone would be to complete Level 2 at school, and apply for all scholarships that are available, as this has really helped fund my study.”

Frequently Asked QuestionsCan I bring my own car to Telford?

Yes, provided you have a valid driver’s licence, current registration and Warrant of Fitness, plus up-to-date insurance. Students who do not follow policy conditions may be asked to remove vehicles, or their vehicles may be impounded. Please indicate your intention to bring a car on the enrolment form.

I enjoy hunting. Can I bring firearms to Telford?

Yes, but you’ll need a current firearms licence. Firearms will be securely stored and issued for student use. Please indicate your intention to bring a firearm on the enrolment form.

Can I bring a dog to train during the year?

Yes, but no dogs are initially allowed on campus. It’s a privilege and you should make enquiries with the Farm Director shortly after your course begins. Due to the limited number of kennels available, they are allocated on the basis of commitment to study. When training begins in Term Two, it’s recommended pups are between 3 – 12 months old.

I’m enrolling in the equine programme. Can I bring my own horse?

Yes, you can bring your own horse, or lease one during the year. Conditions apply. Please contact the Equine Tutor (using the contact details on page 34) to determine the suitability of your horse. Travel costs incurred in bringing a horse to Telford are your responsibility.

Do I have to attend all classes?

Yes, attendance at class and work experience is compulsory, unless in the case of illness. Students must also be on time for class.

What books and equipment am I required to bring?

A list of all items is shown on page 12.

What is work experience?

This is your opportunity to put your learning into practice on farm. Telford organise all placements on either the Telford Farm or with our host farmers. Transport is provided both ways, and students are either boarding with the farmer, or may be in single accommodation and have to undertake their own cooking.

Where will I live during term time?

Telford provides on-campus accommodation in our halls of residence. There are room options available – single with your choice of ensuite or shared bathroom. All rooms and living areas are cleaned by our cleaners. Meals are prepared, cooked and supplied by our on-campus caterers.

A Halls of Residence application is included in this prospectus. We recommend that you apply early to ensure a place.

Students may also choose to board or flat in the district.

Are there recreation areas?

Telford offers a full-sized gymnasium (with marked courts and weight training room), pool table, confidence course, paintball, sports field and tennis court. Telford is situated close to rivers and the coastline for fishing, as well as mountains and bush for skiing, hunting and tramping. South Otago also offers excellent opportunities to join local sports teams.

Can someone pick me up at the airport?

Yes, at the beginning and end of each term Telford offers a free pick-up service to and from Dunedin Airport, and Balclutha bus terminals. Should you wish to travel to the airport during term time a charge will be made to cover costs.

Information for Secondary School StudentsSTAR courses for secondary studentsTelford has a well-established history of providing secondary school students with STAR learning by mail. We’ve increased our selection of unit standards available through our STAR programme, and we’re now building on this foundation by also providing quality eLearning to students around the country. Please contact the STAR Coordinator at your school for further information.

The eLearning programme uses a blended delivery approach involving video conferencing ‘MOODLE’, (a learning management system), and paper-based resources. For each hour of video conferencing, up to 10 students can be accommodated and it’s recommended that there are no more than three school sites per session. Schools must have video conference equipment and a video conference room. Students can choose to study predetermined unit standards through weekly video conferencing sessions.

Students will also have access to a learning management system (MOODLE) and paper-based resources posted to the school. Each student is required to complete an enrolment form. We’ll contact the school to arrange suitable times for video-conferencing.

Trades academiesTelford is currently providing the agricultural training for a number of secondary trades academies.
