� What is General English?

A General English course helps you improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, building your knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and structure.

� NEW General English + TELC

By choosing the new General English + TELC option, you will be awarded the TELC (The European Language Certificate) qualification at the end of your course provided you pass the exam for your CEFR level.

TELC is a highly-regarded language test in the European Union, so your Certificate will be valuable proof of your language skills.

The TELC exam is based on real communicative needs, so TELC exam preparation is part of our KKCL General English course which focuses on real-world language ability. Your certificate will

feature your CEFR level, which is fast becoming the standard for assessing language ability.

Our in-house examiners are licensed for TELC dual-level exams, offering security for students on the boarder of two particular levels (e.g. B1/B2).

To sit the TELC exam you should study General English for at least four weeks. To achieve higher than your current CEFR level or ensure that you pass the exam, we recommend 12 weeks or more, depending on your confidence and ability.

� Studying General English at KKCL

Our teachers use a variety of creative approaches to ensure that the lessons are motivating, interesting, challenging and fun.

We believe that if the teachers have high expectations, students achieve more. Our teachers are skilled professionals who understand their students’ needs and know how to provide the support and guidance that is needed in order for students to reach their maximum potential.

� How do we teach English?

You can start and finish a General English course at any time. We have designed a rolling, topic based syllabus that allows our teachers to be creative and flexible in meeting students’ needs and wishes.

Lessons have a lot of variety in terms of activities, task types and topics. Students are encouraged to speak, read, write and listen as much as possible. We have high expectations of our students but we are also very supportive and do everything we can to help students reach these expectations.

� Materials

You will not buy a specific coursebook for your course. We do not believe in using one set of materials as we adapt lessons to the specific needs of our students. For each course you will use various coursebook materials, workbooks, audio, video and web materials.

� What levels are there?

A lot of people have already studied some general English courses or ESOL courses and they are often confused about the different levels and course names.

The table below explains which levels are the same and what their code is according to the Common European Framework of Reference for language learning (CEFR):

� Which levels can I study at KKCL?

We offer English language classes for all levels from beginner (A1)to advanced (C2). TELC qualifications are available for all levels up to dual-level B2-C1. A TELC-qualified examiner will assess you before your first lesson, so you will start at the correct level.

� Can I apply for a UK student visa to study General English?

Yes, you can apply to study General English under a Tier 4 student visa, or a (short-term) student visitor visa. If you intend to study under a Tier 4 visa, you must be ready to start at B2 (Upper Intermediate) level and take at least 15 hours of classes per week. While Tier 4 students are not eligible to study levels A1-B1, you may study these levels with a short-term student visitor visa. For the latest information on student visas, please see the UKBA website.

� How will you check my progress?

During your course you will have tests every month which will check your progress in vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking. After each test, you will have an individual tutorial with your teacher where you can discuss your progress and make plans for the next stage of your course.

� What do I get at the end of my language course?

We recommend that you take the TELC certificate at the end of your course. This will give you an internationally-recognised qualification with your CEFR level.

If you do not wish to take the TELC test or you are studying with us for a shorter time, you will receive a KKCL Certificate with your CEFR level based on an exit test and the continuous assessment of your teacher.

� One-To-One Tuition Option

One-to-one tuition is designed to meet the student’s own requirements. The minimum booking is two hours.

During every session, the teacher is able to focus on your individual needs and personal learning style, helping you make the best possible progress.

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System, which tests English proficiency across all levels. It is run by Cambridge ESOL, IDP Education Australia and the British Council. The exam includes Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

The Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals have been designed in consultation with UK employers and is aimed at those who wish to acquire management skills and knowledge for real-world application.

Higher Nationals are also suitable for those already working in a management role who wish to consolidate and develop their skills by gaining a formal management qualification.

� Progression RoutesThe BTEC Higher National is an ideal alternative progression route, allowing students to progress to university in the UK and in other countries.

BTEC HNC is recognised as equivalent to the first year of a UK University degree and BTEC HND is recognised as equivalent to the first two years of a UK University degree.

Students graduating from HNC and HND programmes are able

to progress to honours degree programmes with the entry requirements varying according to the receiving institution.

Students who complete the one year HNC will receive the HNC Certificate and can continue their studies for another year with KKCL to complete the HND.

There are many examples of students studying their BTEC Higher National locally before entering the second or even final year of a degree in another country such as the United States or Australia.

� Recogntion of Prior Learning (HND Only)Students with all or part of a recognised Ofqual Level 4 qualification may be accepted on to the HND with advanced standing via the Recognition of Prior Learning process.

Other UK or international qualifications equivalent to QCF Level 4 may be also be accepted.

For the Recognition of Prior Learning process, credits will be given for relevant study at the correct level. Admissions applications requiring the RPL process may take up to 2 weeks to process.

� BTEC HNC in Business Course Structure

The BTEC HNC is usually 1 year, but it can be taken as in 1.5 years as a part-time course.

� Professional Papers (P1-P7)

The professional papers require students to apply their knowledge, skills and professional judgement. Students must analyse, evaluate and make recommendations based on their

experience. Papers can be taken in any order.

� Variant papers (law and tax)

ACCA is an international professional body, so it offers students the opportunity to take the law and tax papers that reflect these systems in several countries.

Please note that we only offer the International variant for relevant papers.

� Registration and Exemptions

Before you enrol with a learning provider it is important that you register as a student with ACCA. This will mean that (if applicable) you have the correct exemption information to pass onto the learning provider to ensure you study towards the right papers.

� Computer-Based Exams (CBEs)

Computer-Based Exams (CBEs) are available for F1, F2 and F3. CBEs offer flexibility as they can be sat at any time and do not restrict you to the June and December sittings for paper-based exams.

KKCL is a licenced CBE centre with up-to-date computers in our examination room. CBEs are held on alternate Fridays at a regular fee but are also available on other days for an additional fee. Please Note: You will not be able to sit CBEs unless you are a registered student with ACCA and are eligible to sit a particular paper.

The BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting is a full degree run in conjunction with Oxford Brookes University and ACCA.

There are numerous benefits to completing the degree. Not least because a degree and a professional accounting qualification are a powerful combination to have, putting you in demand with employers and increasing your career prospects.

The BSc is an officially recognised Undergraduate course, which has been running since 2000.

The course comprises of 16 modules, 9 of which are externally examined. One of the 16 modules is the final dissertation, which is not optional.

� Why Study the IFP?

The International Foundation Programme (IFP) is a university preparation programme based on the BTEC HNC in Business and aimed at students who wish to study towards a full university degree but do not have the necessary British A Level qualifications or equivalent.

The programme will improve your English, develop your academic skills and give you the internationally-recognised HNC qualification which will allow you to enter onto the first year of a related UK Bachelor degree programme.

The programme is for those who plan to study a Business-related subject at degree level. Examples of relevant degree programmes include Business Studies, Business Management, Accounting and Finance, Marketing, Economics and IT.

You will study core academic modules in business along with English language and learning skills modules:

� IFP001 General English

The programme starts by ensuring you have a solid communicative base. Classes are scheduled on a daily basis for three hours. You will focus on the four skills, developing your grammatical accuracy and lexical range in everyday English.

Teachers use a wide range of materials and techniques to adapt to the needs and styles of different learners. You will be tested at placement, during the course and at the end to track your progress. You will also receive a learning tutorial and an individual learning plan.

� IFP002.1 – 2.6 Skills Modules

These are supplementary hour-long classes which cover a range of skills:

IFP002.1 Pronunciation: You will be made familiar with the English phonological system at both phonemic and prosodic levels, enabling you to improve both your speaking and listening over the year.

IFP002.2 Study Skills: You will learn reading and research strategies; evaluation and analysis; discussions and presentations; organisation and time management; motivation, focus and learner styles.

IFP002.3 Writing Skills: Students from different cultures can have a very different approach to written discourse to that expected in the UK. We ensure your hand-writing, note-taking and spelling skills are satisfactory.

We also look at the structure of English written discourse, the style and format of key genres, such as essays and reports and process techniques for producing good pieces of writing.

IFP002.4 British Culture: Studying in Britain for the first time can be a culture shock for many students and it is vital that factors outside the classroom do not disrupt your progress. In addition, many students choose the UK because of British culture, which

is one of the UK’s main attractions as a study destination. For these reasons, we include several sessions on British institutions, character, pop culture, traditions, media, food and drink.

IFP002.5 Business English: This module develops key skills in letter-writing, interviewing, meetings and presentations as well as business vocabulary.

IFP002.6 ESP: We also offer a range of modules focusing on specific types of English, e.g. Creative Media, Fashion and Legal English.

� IFP003 IELTS Preparation

At this level, 10 weeks is a suitable time for you to become well-practised in IELTS strategies, as well as to extend your academic competence. You are familiarised with the exam format, and trained in a wide range of cognitive and practical techniques to enable you to maximise your performance in the test.

During the course you are required to conduct research and deliver presentations on current affairs, as well as on issues related to science and the humanities.

You will sit your IELTS exam at our nearest test centre. The exam fee is included.

� IFP004-00 BTEC HNC in Business Modules

We cover the following nine BTEC HNC in Business modules in 24 weeks:

Upon successful completion of this programme, you will receive college-backed certificates as well as the IELTS test report. You will have the knowledge and confidence to meet the requirements of universities in the UK.

Furthermore, upon successful completion of all of the BTEC HNC in Business modules, you will receive the HNC in Business awarded by Pearson BTEC. Once awarded this qualification, you will be eligible for progression onto the first year of a Bachelor degree programme at a UK university.
