INSPIRED (4) SUMMER

Ellie SimON the 11 November 1994, a girlwas born in Walsall, England thatwould go onto inspire millions ofpeople worldwide. That girl was Ellie Simmonds. She propelled to fame during the2008 Beijing Paralympics as theyoungest British Athlete tocompete.Ellie who has achondroplasia (aform of dwarfism) beganswimmingat only five-years-old atBoldmereSwimmingClub inSuttonColdfield. It was thenthat Ellie’stalent wasspotted andshe and hermothermoved toSwanseaso that shecould takeadvantageof theworld-classpool in thecity. In 2008 andat only 13-years-old,Ellie wenton to wingold medals in the 100m and400m freestyle swimming eventsduring the Beijing Paralympics. If the hearts of the nation were notalready warmed by herhumbleness after the 100m eventthey certainly were after the400m.Instead of parading about showingof her gold medal Ellie went to

comfort Nyree lewis, a fellowswimmer who came in sixth in therace and who Ellie says wasinspiration to get into the pool inthe first place.Ellie has inspired a wholegeneration of people and showedthat nothing, not even a disabilityshould stand in their way.She famously said: “I don’t think ofit as a disability. I’m just a bit

smaller than everyone else.”After the 2008 Games Ellie wenton to be the voted Young SportsPersonality of the Year and in2009 she made the New YearHonours list and became theyoungest person to receive anMBE at only 14-years-old. WOW!In the lead up to the London 2012Olympics and Paralympics Ellie

became a poster girl for the eventalong with fellow GB TeamMember Jessica Ennis. The crowd went mad for Ellie. To add to her collection that asloincluded nine world record titles, she earned herself two more goldmedals and bagged another worldrecord by taking five seconds offthe 400m world record. She also won a silver and bronze

medal. All of this was achievedbefore the girl had evenhit 18-years-old! Ifthat’s not an inspirationthen who knows whatis!Although Ellie is agenuine, caring personoutside of the pool andshows a great deal ofsportsmanship towardsevery competitor - inthe pool another side ofher seems to come out.She said in the lead upto the 2012 Olympics“They’re nice peopleand I get on with them, but when we’re in thepool its war.”If that’s what’s helpedher to win four Olympicgold medals then welike her thinking! To celebrate her gold’sfrom London, two RoyalMail post boxes were

painted gold. One was in Aldridge and anotherin Swansea.Ellie should be a great inspirationto everyone who feels that theyhave drew the short straw in life.People should take a look at whatthis girl has achieved and takenote that anything is possible!

SARA Hillshould beconsideredin her ownright anInspiration. In 2011sheopenedtheAcademyof Make-up inGlasgowafternoticingthe highdemandmake-upschools inScotland. The only make-up school in Britain at the time wasbased in London, limiting the choice for potential make-up artists to there or overseas.Sara has been working as a freelance make-up artistfor 18-years and even went to work in Australia for ayear.Shortly after this she received her big break andbegan working on a number of TV sets. She said: “Iworked for the BBC for quite a long time and then Iworked on a programme called Stargate SG-1 inCanada. I worked in television for quite a long time butthat was seven-years-ago and it’s mainly fashion workI do now.”Sara has worked with loads of celebrities during

fashion shoots and awards shows like the BRIT’s. She has helped to preen stars such as Kanye West,

Emeli Sande and even a Spice Girl – Mel C. Lucky her!Sara believes that applying make-up really is a form of

art and takes inspiration from different cultures. Shesaid: “I read a lot of magazines from Sweden andGermany. I think the sort of work that is coming out ofthere is really inspirational. It seems to be lessmainstream and a lot more interesting. I also like to go

to moderngalleries and getinspired bydifferent types ofart work and thecolours. I evenget inspired by . One thing thatSara certainlyhas isexperience andshe knowswhere mostpeople go wrongwhen doing theirmake-up. Shesaid: “Skin isalways the mostimportant thing.I think findingthe right colour

of foundation and not using it as a mask which a lot ofwomen tend to do is really important. Foundationshould be looked at as a light way to even out yourskin tone and using a concealer to perfect the skinrather than using something that is all covering.”This is what Sara says is her top tip. She believesfoundation is the most important part of make-up. Shesaid: “When I do someone’s foundation I try and use aslittle product as possible to try and get the best results.I feel it should look real. I don’t like that sort of fakelook.”Sara might be living the perfect life - full of glamourand celebrities, but she really is just a normal girl at

heart. When asked who the most inspirational person is inher life she lets out a giggle and says: “This is going tosound really cheesy but my boyfriend is the mostinspirational person in my life. He’s really helped meand kept me motivated in those times when I felt theindustry was tough and kept me going. So he’sdefinitely my inspiration.”How sweet!

FACEBOOK and Twitter – social networking site’s thatallow people to unleash their inner vanity.Every newsfeed is full of self-confessed posers uploadingpictures through apps such as Instagram to help enhancetheir beauty. While this app might provide the ideal lighting to makeyou look flawless, there unfortunately isn’t an app tochange the outfit you are wearing in pictures… yet.Research by AX Paris has shown that 72 percent ofwomen would only wear a dress once in fear of beingtagged in photos wearing the same outfit. The survey also shows that a third of women would cancel a night out if they felt they had no other optionthan to wear the same dress twice. Is this an obsession gone too far?Jemma Reid, a 24-year-old nursery teacher from Paisleysaid: “I only wore a dress once and I felt like I couldn’twear it again because it was my profile picture onFacebook. I didn’t want people to think I always wore thesame clothes.Recession has also hit the high-street hard and clothesare no longer as cheap as they once were. You wouldthink that this would stop women from putting pressureon themselves to have a different look each time but itlooks like it has actually made the situation worse.Pride could be the issue. Maybe women don’t want other

people to know that the recession has hit them hard too.Jemma continued: “Clothes are expensive now and people don’t have the money but I still feel under pressure. Seeing other girls on Facebook and Twitter always looking good and wearing new clothes makes mewant to be the same.”It is not often that Celebrities wear the same outfit morethan once, but when they do we all seem to think it’samazing and feel like they are really once of us.Dramatic –yes! True -yes!Jemma said: “It’s always made out to be a big thing whencelebrities are seen in the same outfit. It does make mefeel good and I do think that when you buy somethingyou should be allowed to wear it as many times as youwant. However thinking that and actually doing it are twototally different things.”Kate Middleton doesn’t seem to be feeling the pressure. The Duchess of Cambridge has been pictured hundredsof times wearing the same outfits. She was even pictured wearing the same dress as hermum Carole!Let’s be honest the mum-to-be could probably wear ablack bin bag and we’d all say she looked amazing but Isay if the future queen can wear the same outfits twicethen so can we!

Sarah (Sadie) Sloan was only 15-years-old whenthe war first broke out in 1939.She lived in George Street in Paisley with herfather Robert, mother Mary and was the secondyoungest of 14 children.By 1942 Sarah married Ebenezer (Abbie) Reid, alocal man who she used to see every morningwhen she was going to her work in the thread mill.It wasn’t long until Sadie found out she waspregnant with their first child and then Abbie wascalled up to serve in Sicily and Burma. He waspart of the Seaforth Highlanders.Sadie’s sister Kathleen who was 22-years-oldworked as an electric crane driver.Gordon Reid, Sadie’s son said: ‘Kathleen wasdoing the job of a man who was sent to war.”One day Kathleen was driving her crane andanother worker mistakenly pressed the wrongbutton and the load from her crane fell on top ofKathleen.Gordon said: “She was rushed to the WesternInfirmary where doctors confirmed that she hadreceived multiple injuries. She only lived for twohours after the accident.”The Sloan family was devastated. Not only had she left behind her parents andsiblings she had also left behind her daughterNoreen.Noreen was only three-years-old and was taken inand raised by Kathleen’s parents. If Sarah hadn’t already gone through enough afew months later her and Abbie’s baby was born. She was also named Kathleen Norah WallaceMcCutcheon Reid. After the war ended Abbie returned home to hiswife and little girl who was only one-year-old.At first baby Kathleen didn’t recognise her father,

but it wasn’t long until she got used to him beingaround.Sadie and Abbie went on to have thirteen morechildren and stayed in Paisley for the rest of theirlives.Sadie and her sister Kathleen were greatinspirational women in their own right andalthough Kathleen’s life was cut short I’m sure shewas a great inspiration to her sisters and even herlittle girl Noreen.Sadie passed away in 2005 at 81-years-oldsurrounded by her family. She spent her whole life helping people and notonly raised her own children, but took in thosewho were less fortunate and made them part ofthe family. She was a great inspiration to people then andstill continues to be now.

BEFORE the 1940’s very few women hadcareers. Those that did only carried out the ‘women jobs’such as nursing and secretarial work.It wasn’t until their men were called up to serve inWorld War 2 that things began to change.Women had to pick up where the men left off.Adverts were shown depicting beautiful womenlooking femine and sexy whilst working. This was to encourage them to go and find jobs. They began working in factories. They becameplumbers and engineers. Every ‘man’s’ job youcan think of had been taken over by a women. The ‘Women’s Land Army’ saw women working

for 50 hours a week in farms and fields toincrease the amount of food grown.50 hours a week! And then they were going hometo look after their families. Talk about beinginspirational! While no words can express how grateful we areto the men who fought for our country – thewomen of the 1940s saved us in so many waystoo!Without them our country would have fell topieces and the men wouldn’t have had a home tocome home to.This is why the women of the 1940’s are trulyinspirational!

Michelle Obama

She’s the first African- American First Lady who camefrom a normal, working-class background and went on tostudy at Princeton University and Harvard Law School. She grew up in a time where blacks were still consideredthe lower class in America.Through her role as First Lady she has worked with manycharities and military families and helped to promote education and tackle child obesity. It is not only brains that Mrs Obama has. She regularly inspires women through her fashion sense and love ofkeeping fit.

Aung San Suu Kyi

This inspirational woman from Burma has the courageand determination that most people can only dream of.The pro-democracy leader has never given up on her belief and campaigned endlessly and non-violentlyagainst one of the most brutal dictatorships in the world. She has sacrificed so much in her own life and has notseen her husband (who sadly died in 1999) and childrensince 1995. She was also put under house arrest for 15-years.Her courage should be a great inspiration to all women tonever give up on their beliefs.

Who Inspires You?

The Queen

She has served her country for 60 years after being thrustinto the spotlight in 1952.At the tender age of 25 and with two small children toraise she managed to fit into what was definitely a man’sworld at the time and prove that she belonged on thethrone. Her people have been served with grace and panacheever since and that is why women today should considerher one of the world’s greatest inspirational women tohave ever lived.

Oprah Winfrey

The chat show host came from an unimaginably poorbackground and now today she is the first self-made billionaireShe has done hundreds of charity work and founded aschool in South Africa. Her own network, Oprah’s Angel gives educational grantsand she personally donated ten million dollars to help thevictims of Hurricane Katrina rebuild their homes.Oprah is a great inspiration to women because she hasnever forgotten the sort of background she came from.

I would have to say my mum.The reasons are she hashelped me through some roughtimes in the recent past, beenthere to listen to my troublesand help me. Even when she isunwell she is always thinking ofothers. She is the ype of person who will encourage youto achieve your best and is always willing to help with anyproblem you have. She is akind, caring, thoughtful personand is always thinking of others.

My dad is my inspiration. He always knows the rightthing to say and has alwaysbeen there for me.He works really hard for hisfamily.

My mum is the biggest inspiration in my life. Ithink all mothers shouldbe some sort of inspira-tion to their children. My mum has alwaysbeen there for me andshe has shown me howto be a good mother.I hope I have alwaysbeen there for my children and taught themthe things my ownmother taught me.

MARGARET Thatcher was born in Grantham on 13October 1925. She was the daughter of a Grocerwho went on to become the first female PrimeMinister of Britain and the only one we have had sofar. She was elected in 1979 and stayed in power untilshe was thrown out by her own party in 1990.Her death on 8th April has proven that even in deathshe continues to split the country.Carol McGiffin has been very outspoken on hershow ‘Loose Women’ saying that she feels Thatcherwas a great inspiration to women and even the Philanthropist, Katie Piper has caused controversy bytaking to twitter recently to say: “To be inspired bysomeone, I don’t have to agree with everythingthey’ve done.”These comments don’t particularly come as asurprise considering these women come from theSouth of England – exactly the part of the countrythat the Baroness seemed to favour. While some of the English might see her as being agreat inspiration to women, the majority of views fromthe north of the country are well… somewhat different.I don’t think I have spoken to a single person whohas turned around and said they agreed with thedecisions she made. What people have said was thatshe was only for the rich, she did nothing for the country and she never listened to anyone else apart from herself.Elaine Reid, a mother of four from Paisley said: “She wasn’t for the working class. You

would have thought with her being a women shewould have had sympathy for the working classpeople but all she was interested in doing was sellingof nationalized service to fat cat conservativebusinessmen. I would like someone to tell me howshe improved the living conditions for anyone north ofLondon.”This view is held by the majority of people in thiscountry who remember the poll tax implemented onthe Scottish ‘guinea pigs.’Looking back at her polices I have also yet to findone that was to the benefit of women or to help andallow them tofollow in her footsteps. Thatcher was ‘invading’ a man’s world and so she had to becomestronger than those around her, even if that did meanthinking more like a man than a woman.Elizabeth McLaughlin, Senior Lecturer andprogramme leader for Sports Journalism at theUniversity of the West of Scotland agrees. She said: “She wasn’t an inspiration in the way youwould like to be inspired. She’s inspired women, intelligent women to act in a different way than shedid. I think what she did was became more male thanthe men that surrounded her because women areregarded as the more nurturing and empathetic of thetwo sexes. She showed no empathy, understanding or nurturing for the society and thecountry.”Margaret Thatcher undoubtedly ruined lives. She closed Ravenscraig, a steal works in Motherwellputting thousands of people out of jobs. She shut Chrysler, a car plant in Linwood putting13,000 people out of work.

She put generations of families out ofwork, generations that are still strugglingtoday.Mary Wright, a student at the Universityof the West of Scotland said: “She wasinspirational in some ways but I thinkshe done the country a lot of damage, Imean she didn’t support the miners. There were things she just didn’t do.She didn’t do as much for the country asshe could have.”It is not only women who were alive during the 1980s that feel strongly aboutMargaret Thatcher. Some say that the youth of this countryhave no right to hold an opinion onsomeone who they never saw in power, but how come they are allowed to haveopinions on people such as Hitler? A bitfar-fetched comparing Thatcher to Hitlersome might say, but then again otherswon’t!Sommer Reid, an 18-year-old dramastudent from Paisley has grown up onstories from her father who had the opportunity of getting into a trade takenaway from him because of the cuts tothe industries. Her Grandpa was alsoone of the men made redundant from

Chrysler.Sommer feels that she is entitled to anopinion and that Thatcher could haveused her role as being the first female incharge to help make the lives of womeneasier: “She had a chance to show thatwomen were just as strong as men butshe went too far trying to be this socalled ‘Iron Lady’. She acted like a manin a man’s world where as she shouldhave acted like a true woman and had aheart. She never had the maternal instincts that you expect every woman tohave. It was like her having children andholding one down while helping theother to flourish.”It is clear that the feelings people sostrongly felt back when Thatcher was inpower still burn bright today. Her final years were spent out of thelimelight so no one really knows whatsort of women she became.Maybe she regretted what she did andthought that if she could have had thechance to do it all over again, she wouldhave done things completely different... Then again the Lady was not forturning.
