    REVIEW: The first edition of this extraordinarily enduring text was published in 1955, and Dame Sheila Sherlock

    did the updates herself until she finally took on a co-author in 1993. Sherlock died in 2001, having seen anadvance copy of the 11th edition of her unmatched classic text. The text's clarity of writing and layout brought

    many into the field of hepatology, and the impact has been international via translations, and ongoing with

    updated editions. The 12th edition carries Sherlock's name at the head of the title and continues the legacy by

    incorporating work by many contributors who were influenced by Sherlock directly or indirectly. The four editors

    are affiliated as follows: James S. Dooley (University College London Medical School, Royal Free Hospital, UK);

    Anna S.F. Lok (U. of Michigan, US); Andrew K. Burroughs (Royal Free Hospital, UK); and E. Jenny Heathcote

    (U. of Toronto, Canada). A companion website makes available all 700 figures and captions for downloading.
