Continuing our Bali-Java project from 2007 inwhich the Undisclosed Territory was a followup activity of the 15 th Performance ArtConference in Bali, 2007s UndisclosedTerritory #2 was connected with thePerformance Art Laboratory Project (PALA Project) 2008 in Bali. PALA 2009 was followedby Undisclosed Territory#3, which the hasbeen succeeded for its 2 days event in Solo.PALA Project 2010 and undisclosed territories#4 was focusing on the exchange betweenthe Black Market International with numbers ofperformance artists from Asian countries.

Different than the past three years, bothprojects took place at the Padepokan LemahPutih Solo, Java, Indonesia. After four successful years of the projects, wedecide to continue with PALA Project 2011 andUndisclosed Territory #5.PALA Project 2011 is purposed to providespace and time for the participating artists toshare their artistic processes, to exchangeexperiences, practical and conceptualmethods, and to enhance dialogues in a kindof organically structured laboratory process

and in a concentrated place. It will take placeat the village in the mountain area and Sukuhtemple.

For our Undisclosed Territory#5, PadepokanLemah Putih intends to provide time and spacefor work presentations, developing newunderstanding and opening dialogue betweenthe artists and with the public within thecontext of performance art. Both projects are two strong connectedelements in which artists have moreconcentrated time and space to experienceexchange and dialogue processes betweenartists as well as being present for public inone place.

Pad epo kan Lem ah Pu t ih has bee ncollaborating with Boris Nieslony to put theconceptual basement for PALA Project since2007. We consider using one conceptualbasement for several periods of the project, inorder to achieve dynamic that arise from eachperiod regarding the diversity of the artistsinvolved.

The deviation between body-movements,body-gestures and body language anddeviation of the transport of contents entitledour focus to open the laboratory project and to

be conti nued for sharin g, exchange, developing new work, collaborations orpresentations.

We hope that by realizing both projects, artistsand public are stimulated to broaden anddeepen their perspectives about performanceart in art, social and cultural, as well as,humanity contexts.

The laboratory will run under a working frame, which is prepared by thefacilitators. The facilitators will provide a basic concept from the artisticgenre for the laboratory, arrange and put the program together. Facilita-tors will arrive earlier in order to develop a structure and schedule of thelaboratory, together with the organizer.Participating artists are selected artists by the organizer and facilitators.Participating artists are international and Indonesian artists in their midor advanced carrier in performance art or performing arts.

    Form of Activities

    - Philosophical understanding- Laboratories- Physical practices- Visual awareness- On site realization and practices- Open discussions- Collaborations, working group and open sessions

    Themes and Focus

Theme 1The deviation between body-movements, body-gestures and bodylanguage( see page below )

Theme 2Some Thoughts about the Deriving/Originating of contextual Concepti-ons in EncounteringSomatic CultureInteraction with the various forms of human existence, coincidentalattendances and absences, Spacious realities and circumstances, withlevels and layers of enlivened worlds, realities. A discourse with theparticipatory modication, human and place, gestus and habitus, dea-ling and wheeling, etc. These facts can be seen as parameters within the most differentialencounters. I call them parameters, because I was shown the mostdiverse structural differences in various encounters, no touching anycultural inheritance, not the cultural representation of the daily, notfounded by the cultural presence of a single person, a population, anation, but touch the "idiosyncrasies of the daily" and therefore have atemporal longer lasting period of the course of process, then theparticular representation of the particular national culture.Next to the ethnographic and anthropological context, the big interestexists to explore counter-relations that embody themselves as dynamicchanges and that have to be dened as pre-cultural forces. This is examined in various elds of problematic and I want to portraitsome of them in the following passages. In this theoretical eld should carry questions, theses and considerati-ons, brought in by the invited artists, who burn them on the heart.

    Practical Application

    1. Introduction and leading processThe facilitators are responsible to introduce the program, based onthe concept. They are also expected to lead all presentation, arrange the time, and order of artists presentation

    2. Artist presentations, lecture, performative presentationsArtists are asked to present their creative process, by presentationin a form of talk, interactive media work, documentation screening. Each artist will be provided with one hour presentation time, inclu-ded the question and answer session.3. Practical sharingArtists may offer a specic technique or exercise they use in theircreative process. It should be discussed beforehand with the cura-tor.4. Sessions:

    -

Session (1): shows the different possibilities of co-operations.Duet, Trio, and other forms more. Insert by the interest of theartists and coming out by the theoretical talks. The sessioncould be frame some models of known and unknown interac-tions between humans artistic attitudes.

    - Session (2): personal interactions or site-specic interventionin a very specic outdoor surrounding

    - Open Session: open for all invited artists. An open session isan open situation, where artists can enter and leave the spaceto do performance, actions, interactions, improvisations, etc.It will be some hours session, mostly in the evening. After theopen session, there will be a round discussion.

    5. Introducing local artistsThe laboratory will include the presence of local (traditional) artistand art critics.

We will ask the artists to give a talk, about their method, history andrecent condition, before or after they present their performances.6. Introducing the environmental sources around the Solo area.We will travel to one or two specic sites around Solo, i.e. Waterfall, and temples, mountain side

    Places of PALA

The laboratory has been taking place in the region or area where allartists can work in a kind of common social sites in Indonesia, such invillages as well as in the place which is close to the naturalenvironment.PALA needs a place where artists can concentrate to work and beingseparated from their own domestic daily life. The rst PALA in 2008 and the second PALA in 2009, had taken place inthe Tejakula Village, northern coast of Bali. All artists were staying in thesame area and spend the whole week together. The third PALA in 2010,had taken place at the area of Padepokan Lemah Putih, which is situa-ted in the village, northern part of Solo city. The fourth PALA in 2011 willtake place in the Sukuh Temple area, 60 kilometers away from Solo tothe Mount Lawu region.

    PALA 2011 LOCATION

The projects will be held around the area ofSukuh Temple, Karanganyar, Central Java.Sukuh temple is located in Berjo Village, Argo-yoso district, in the slope of mount Lawu 35Km east of Solo at a height about 910 m abovesea level. The temple stretches from the eastto the west with the main gate in the west.

Sukuh Temple is decorated with wayang stonecarvings of Hindu origin. The temples are distinctive compared withother ancient temples in Central Java, and itsuniqueness lies in the landscaping, statuettes, and relief. The temples occupy an 11,000m2area and consist of three terraces, each con-nected with an ascending alley. The most inu-ential part is the last terrace, at the very backof the compound. At this very sacred area, once erected a homogenous phallic statue, which is now displayed at the National Muse-um, Jakarta.Another interesting and controversial factor ofthis historical site is the artistic relief on itsoor, which depict male and female organssymbolizing the birth of life. This kind of con-struction is common in prehistoric time, espe-cially in the megalithic era of pundan berundak(terrace grave). The temple consist of threeterraces, the rst terrace is the lowest level, followed by the second and the third above it.The terrace are connected with stairs to eachother, each of it has an entrance gate. Thetemple has believed to be constructed in the

15th century during the declining years of Ma-japahit Empire. The relief found beside therst gate are believed had mean (sengkalan)reads Gapura Buta Aban Wong and GapuraButa Anahut Bubut, meaning the year of 1359saka or 1437 AD.

Behind the temple is a forest which belongs tothe natural preservation. The area is famouswith its clove plantation.

We will also provide another place for thelaboratory meeting and lunch and dinnergathering.
