Quick Examples

04/19/23 17:45 R-1: Properties of Real Numbers 3

Write an algebraic expression to represent each situation.

A. the number of apples in a basket of 12 after n more are added

B. the number of days it will take to walk 100 miles if you walk M miles per day

Add n to 12.

Divide 100 by M.

12 + n

Quick Examples

04/19/23 17:45 R-1: Properties of Real Numbers 4

Write an algebraic expression to represent each situation.

C. the difference of a number less 2 equals 7.

n – 2 = 7

D. Write out: 21 ÷ 7 = 3

The quotient of 21 and 7 is 3.

Order of Operations

04/19/23 17:45 R-1: Properties of Real Numbers 5

To evaluate operations, one way to remember the order of operations is by using the mnemonic PEMDAS.

REMEMBER: Multiplication and Addition doesn’t always go first before Division and Subtraction

Order of Operations1. Parentheses and grouping symbols.2. Exponents.3. Multiply and Divide from left to right.4. Add and Subtract from left to right.
