  • Properties of Matter

    Junior Science

  • What is Matter?Matter is anything that has mass

    and occupies space

  • Properties of Matter

A property is any characteristic that allows us to recognise a particular type of matter and distinguish it

    from other forms of matter.

All Matter has both Physical and Chemical Properties

  • Physical PropertiesPhysical properties are used to identify,

    describe and classify matter.

They can be measured without changing the identity or composition of the substance

  • Colour, Shape, Mass,

    Volume

    Boiling point,Melting Point,

    Density,Weight,

    Magnetic

    State of Matter, texture, Luster,

    Solubility

Ductility (ability to be drawn into a

    wire)

Malleability (ability to be pounded into

    thin sheets)

  • Chemical Propertiesdescribe the way a substance may change

or react to form a new a substance or substances.

  • Chemical Properties

    Acidic or Basic?

(Does it cause litmus to change colour)

    Reactivity with….

    FlammabilityDoes it burn or

    catch fire?

    Chemical Properties

Combustibility(Does it help other substance to burn?)

  • Physical Changes

    and Chemical

    Reactions

  • Physical Change

A physical change is a change in which no new substance is formed.

During a physical change NO new substance is formed but the original substance can gain new properties.

  • Chemical Change

In a chemical change at least one new substance is formed.

When a chemical change takes place we call what happens a Chemical Reaction.

  • Physical Change vs. Chemical Reaction

    No new substance formed

    Easily reversed

    Often no heat change occurs

One or more new substances formed

Very difficult or impossible to reverse

    Heat releases or taken in

  • Exothermic and Endothermic Reaction

    Exothermic Reaction

    chemical reactions that

release energy in the form of

    heat, light, or sound.

    Endothermic Reaction

    Chemical reactions which

    require heat to proceed and

take in heat energy from the

    environment
