Employees Take Part in United Way’s Leadership Day of ActionOn June 21, attorneys and staff from Godfrey & Kahn volunteered for the United Way of Greater Milwaukee’s Leadership Day of Action. This year, there were two exciting activities planned.

The first activity, located at the Pathfinders Southeastern Education Center (Center), had volunteers build a library to help make an educational impact on young people’s lives. The Center is a specialized behavioral re-assignment school that partners with Milwaukee Public Schools to provide targeted interventions and focus learning opportunities for students in grades six through eight. Staff members provide a structured and safe learning environment that addresses behavioral problems and personal learning challenges, which allow students to improve their behavior and learning to eventually transition back into the regular school curriculum.

The second activity was located at the Vision Forward Association where volunteers created a Zen Garden and helped clean up the grounds. Vision Forward provides education, training, therapy and support for people of all ages and stages of vision loss. Dani Machata, a shareholder on the firm’s Corporate team, and Meg Kurlinski, an associate on the firm’s Labor & Employment team, were two of the leaders of the volunteer efforts. Dani and Meg are part of United Way of Greater Milwaukee’s Emerging Leaders program which began in 2006 to connect young leaders to the community. Emerging Leaders is a diverse group of individuals under 45 years of age who make a Leadership Level contribution of $1,200 or more to United Way and opt in to the Emerging Leaders program.

Godfrey & Kahn Named 2013 Top Workplace by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Godfrey & Kahn is pleased to announce that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel has named the firm a Top Workplace in the mid-sized company category (150 - 499 employees) for the fourth year in a row. The award recognizes Southeastern Wisconsin organizations that provide an exemplary work environment for their employees.

This is the fourth year the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel worked with WorkplaceDynamics, a suburban Philadelphia company that surveys companies and analyzes the data to determine the area’s top workplaces. Godfrey & Kahn is one of only 32 employers to have been honored in each of the four years the survey has been conducted.

The entrepreneurial, team-oriented work environment and approachable office culture makes Godfrey & Kahn a top place to work. Attorneys are making a difference in the business and legal community and the firm recognizes that all employees are an essential part of the success story. Godfrey & Kahn is committed to a professional and cultural environment of inclusion in which men and women having different backgrounds, perspectives, beliefs and cultural and ethnic heritages can thrive. The firm’s leadership works closely with its employees to identify opportunities for education, networking and client development to provide multiple roads to success.

Godfrey & Kahn Partners with Akina to Conduct the 2013 Business Development Coaching ProgramIn May 2013, Godfrey & Kahn again hosted the Akina Business Development Coaching Program, a six-week intensive training program offered to a small group of senior associates to provide them with the skills and strategies that will allow them to succeed in their business development activities. The curriculum is designed to encourage attorneys to identify solid opportunities for new business and focus their efforts on developing new and solidifying existing relationships. The 2013 Akina class included: Dustin Brown, Bryan Cahill, Liz Chandler, Krisstina Ebner, Jen Gregor, Wade Harrison, Jason Kuwayama, and Brian Spahn.

In addition to two interactive group workshops, the participants met with their Akina coach weekly for one-on-one sessions. The personalized coaching is tailored to meet the needs and capitalize on the skill set of each individual attorney, while the large group setting helps them learn from one another and leverage other internal relationships.

During the final Momentum Session, attorneys shared what they had learned and what they will carry out in their personal business development and marketing plans. Godfrey & Kahn’s Marketing Department will provide continued support to assist the attorneys with their efforts.

Negotiation Training

Working Mother and Flex-Time Lawyers founded the 50 Best Law Firms initiative for Women in 2007 to celebrate law firms that are most successful in retaining and promoting women lawyers. The goal is also to give law firms benchmarking tools to enable them to improve the status of women in their firms in the future. Godfrey & Kahn was also named to the list in 2011.

Carol Evans, president of Working Mother Media, says, “The Best 50 Law Firms for Women have created the ultimate benchmark in the profession. They not only offer excellent flexibility and advancement policies to retain and grow their female talent, they fight for issues crucial to women worldwide through their powerful pro bono programs. Last year, 69% of the Best Law Firms had one or more women in their top ten rainmakers; this year, the number has gone up to 78%, a testament to the firms’ management and those who are rising through the ranks.”

Deborah Epstein Henry, president of Flex-Time Lawyers LLC, states, “We are particularly excited about our Best Law Firms who recognize that designing a women-friendly workplace is not only about individually inspiring women but also making structural changes to the law firm model to make it more hospitable for women to thrive. In turn, these Best Law Firms are implementing effective training programs to empower their women lawyers and also looking at their infrastructure to ensure that the means to effectuate viable work/life policies, groom leaders, award business development credit, and determine compensation and promotion are all being done equitably.”

Godfrey & Kahn and the other law firm honorees will be celebrated on Sept. 25, at the annual Best Law Firms for Women Gala Awards Luncheon at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City.

Godfrey & Kahn shareholders Patricia Falb, Dan Flaherty and Tim McCoy who discussed negotiation techniques in both transactional and litigation settings. Peter Sommerhauser, a corporate team shareholder, presented “My Perspective on Negotiation.” The program included a break-out exercise and a role play where participants were asked to identify strategic moves or phrases that influenced the final outcome of the negotiation.

Attorney Completes “Future Milwaukee” Program

In 2012 and 2013, Godfrey & Kahn sponsored associate Matt Kemp’s participation in the Future Milwaukee community leadership program offered by Marquette University’s College of Professional

Studies. Kemp and the other participants learned about current challenges facing the community through meetings with a variety of local organizations. Topics that the group explored included arts education with the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra and First Stage; urban agriculture and nutrition with Walnut Way and the Fondy Farmers Market; environmental education with the Urban Ecology Center; and women’s health issues with St. Joseph’s Hospital. The class also had the opportunity to meet in a small group setting with local political leaders, including Mayor Tom Barrett and Development Director Rocky Marcoux. Participants also received training in leadership development through lectures and discussions, and they worked in small groups to create original projects aimed at benefitting the community. Kemp’s group explored the area of arts education.

Future Milwaukee has been running for more than 30 years and boasts over 1,400 alums, including several other Godfrey & Kahn attorneys. “Future Milwaukee was a great way to get to know the city better,” said Kemp. “ I think all of the participants, myself included, came away with some valuable new connections and friends, a deeper appreciation of the issues the city faces, and a strong sense of optimism that we can eventually solve those issues.”
