Catholic Charities of Idaho (CCI) uses the "Family Strengthening Model" to deliver profes-sional social services as a framework for helping families succeed. This approach is family-cen-tered, local, collaborative, and focused on strength-ening the capacity of families to function effectively and become more capable of carrying out their re-sponsibilities. Here is the story of one family from Coeur d'Alene benefitting from our Economic Sta-bility services.
Sharon* moved to Idaho from Oregon with the hope of improving the relationship between her 17-year-old son, Mark*, and his father, after a pe-riod of estrangement. One week after moving to Coeur d'Alene, Sharon, Mark and the father were unexpectedly evicted and had to find temporary housing with an acquaintance. Unable to find em-ployment or secure housing, Sharon and Mark went to live in a tent at a homeless encampment.
Sue Coon, our case worker & VISTA volunteer, got to know Sharon and Mark at the Fresh Start drop-in homeless shelter. Sharon expressed to Sue that she was ready to change her lifestyle because she did not want her son to live in a tent any lon-ger, especially during the cold North Idaho winter.
Another important characteristic of the Fam-ily Strengthening Model is collaboration with community partners. Sue knew how to connect Sharon and Mark to the appropriate local service systems.

fordable housing and gain employment. First, Sue showed Sharon how to apply for transitional hous-ing. She then helped them connect with the school district (so that Mark could receive job training) and with The Society of St. Vincent de Paul where Sharon could volunteer her time as they helped her obtain her Idaho identification card, a requirement to obtain employment.
The Family Strengthening Model engages the family in the decision and goal-making process.
Sue accompanied Sharon & Mark on public trans-portation so they could learn to navigate the available public systems and obtain basic necessities: visiting a food bank to get emergency food supplies, apply-ing at the Department of Health and Welfare for food stamps and Medicaid health insurance, and in-terviewing with Family Promise, a resource to help move families from homelessness to independence.
Every family's journey has unique obstacles and detours.
Sharon was ineligible for services at Family Promise, so Sue encouraged her to continue her volunteer work at St. Vincent de Paul as well as her employment search. After a few months, Sharon informed Sue that she had applied for and obtained a job at a local retail store.
Sue continues to maintain contact with Sharon and Mark. Sue shares, "Sharon still has obstacles to overcome and challenges to face, but now she faces them with the knowledge she can access commu-nity services if she needs them." Mark is currently working out of town with his father and plans to return to Coeur d'Alene in October where he will seek employment and pursue his goal of qualifying for military service.
Working collaboratively with local families to achieve their goals for economic stability, Catholic Charities of Idaho remains committed to provid-ing help, creating hope and promoting justice.

Dear Friends in Christ,At Catholic Charities of Idaho (CCI), we are putting our faith into action by providing help, creating hope and promoting justice
throughout the state. As I complete my first year serving as Executive Director of CCI, I am filled with both gratitude for the accom-plishment and progress of the last year as well as excitement and positive expectation for the future.
We have much to do. Faith and community leaders across the state see the growing need for services to struggling families and ask CCI to increase our services in response. In our current unpredictable economy, there are many who will benefit from our programs. More families, couples and children need our low-cost counseling and mental health services. People will access our "Pathways to Economic Stability" program to begin a course out of poverty. Those who are on a pathway to citizenship or find themselves victims of domestic violence will need our low-cost, professional legal services. Over the next year, hundreds of children will improve their academic performance through our after-school learning and enrichment program. As we look forward, CCI is committed to meet these needs through strategic, effective and sustainable growth.
We partner with individuals, organizations, businesses and parishes to strengthen families and communities. We listen and engage community members to discern the need and determine where CCI can be most effective. We offer our organization as a resource to parishes and work with them to address the needs in their local communities.
Effective outcomes are achieved by delivering evidence-based best practice programs. When we utilize programs that are sub-stantiated by research and deliver services with proven best-practices we have confidence that the resources spent in pursuit of our mission will produce measurable results that change lives.
Sustainability increases when we combine strategic partnerships and effective outcomes with cooperation. CCI is and will be sustained by the time, talent and treasure of those who work together, giving what they have, toward a mission of hope, help and justice.
We are a people of faith empowering people in need to reach their spiritual, emotional and economic potential. All of us together, staff, board members, supporters, volunteers, commu-nity partners and those we serve are members of the same team, working toward a common goal of strengthening families and communities. counSeling and education
Counseling and Education Services are prevention oriented and help families and individuals of all ages cope with the stresses of daily living. Services em-phasize personal growth, development, and situational change.
• 228 counseling sessions to strengthen individuals, couples, and families• 269 students obtained educational and enrichment activities to increase academic performance and healthier relationships • 589 individuals attended parenting, financial literacy or English Language Learner classes • 1,515 individuals received information or referral services to access systems within the
community
economic Stability
• 316 individuals received case management services to further their family’s economic stability
• 10 IDA (Individual Development Account) participants saved a total of $23,400, with a 2:1 match resulting in a grand total of $70,200. Nine used their savings to enroll in
college and 1 purchased a home
Financial Education and Case Man-agement services provide educa-tional programs to assist consumers with money management, budget-ing, knowledge of resources and as-set development.
• 230 consultations were provided to individuals with regards to their immigration status• 182 individuals were provided legal assistance to begin their pathway to citizenship • 84 individuals completed a US citizenship educational course• 118 victims of domestic or sexual assault received legal services

Citizenship and Immigration le-gal Services educate and assist individuals and families with in-formation on immigration laws and procedures related to change of legal status and citizenship.

Strengthening communitieS
• 2,343 parishioners received teaching and training to put their faith into action through social justice ministry
• CCI’s staff and volunteer advocacy team met with poverty allies and state legislators in the arena of our anti-poverty campaign: supporting affordable housing, accessible healthcare, eliminating hunger, ensuring economic security, and supporting comprehen-sive immigration reform; of the nine bills we supported, seven passed and became law
Initiatives engage the community at the state, local and parish levels through education on social justice and advocacy to help strengthen families and eliminate poverty.
