THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

By Mark Eley

I hope that this message finds you rested and well and

beginning to ramp up your business again after the holidays. If

your calendar is anything like mine, there is typically a week or

two starting just before Christmas and ending shortly after the

New Year where time seems to slow down a little. The phone

quits ringing except for emergencies and even the incoming

emails and texts take a pause. It’s a great time to catch up on

everything, both personally and professionally, reflect about the

preceding twelve months and plan for the next twelve.

While December 31st marked the end of 2016, it marked

only the halfway point for my Arkansas ASHRAE Team. I really

can’t believe it’s half over. Tim Wentz told me to have fun as

President and I truly am. It’s particularly fun and rewarding to

watch my team knocking down the goals they set at the

beginning of the year. I owe them all a huge ‘thank you’ for the

jobs they are doing. As I’m typing this, our Arkansas ASHRAE

team has logged 8,482 PAOE points for the year. That is in-

credible. We are well on the way to our Chapter goal of 21,500

for the year, especially considering that Forrest Moseley will

probably be entering 5000+ PAOE points in the next few

months due to the great job he’s doing for Research Promotion.

Josh Faulkner is still leading in overall points in my Arkansas

ASHRAE Presidential Award of Excellence competition, but

Forest Moseley, Steve McConnell, Terry Jacks and Melanie

Richardson aren’t far behind.

I want to encourage you to buy your ticket now for our bEQ

seminar on January 20th at Robinson Auditorium. We are

giving away some free tickets to students and inviting several

other engineering societies. I’m afraid we might sell out and

not be able to accommodate all the ASHRAE members that want

to attend. If you haven’t already purchased, please do so now!

I hope to see you at Camp Aldersgate for our regular meeting

on January 4th and at Robinson Auditorium for the Seminar on

January 20th.

Russell Black - Historian

Leadership Recall Interview: Betty Wade (November 2016)

1. Provide a brief biographical sketch of your life (Place of birth, early schooling, higher education,

etc.)

I was born in 1954 in Bossier City, Louisiana, due to my father being stationed at the Air Force Base.

I attended Central High School and worked at Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield in the afternoons,

holidays, summers and pretty much anytime I wasn’t in class before graduating in 1972. I worked during

my junior and senior years as a transcriptionist as part of the high school COE program, which allowed

students to work and receive high school credits.

I attended UALR; however, I never completed my degree due to working full time for Atlantic Envelope

Company starting at age 19. I worked as a receptionist and was promoted to office manager and then oper-

ations manager before becoming a sales representative in 1985 traveling across Arkansas, Texas and Ari-

zona.

In 2002, I founded Longpoint Specialties and am currently operating in Arkansas as a broker for printing

and office supplies.

2. How and when did you become involved in ASHRAE?

My future in-laws (Hank and Betty Wade) were very active in ASHRAE when I met them in 1992. I re-

membered them speaking fondly about their experiences with ASHRAE with their friends and trips they

were able to attend. My future mother-in-law, Betty (yes, we have the same name), was part of the Little

Rock CRC committee in 1990 with other ASHRAE spouses Joan Pettit and Molly Goodwin. They had a

fun time planning the spouse activities. When I was asked by then President Keith Wortsmith to entertain

the spouses in spring 2002, I was more than happy to take the responsibility with the help of Keith’s wife,

Karyn. Then in 2014, President Rick Sellers honored me by requesting me to entertain once again.

3. Please describe your experiences as an ASHRAE First Lady and any other chapter positions that you

have held.

While Vernon was chapter President, I was able to meet and get to know committee chairmen who

served with him, such as Jim Monk, Keith Wortsmith and Sherry Baldwin. Sherry became the President

the following year.

4. What people stand out as influences on you?

My mother-in-law, Betty, and my father-in-law, Hank. I also found my brother-in-law, Hank Jr., was

very instrumental in the positive side of promoting ASHRAE. I also admire Tracy Hayes and Paul Bris-

coe, along with Paul’s wife, Karen, who in my opinion also was a wonderful example of portraying and

keeping ASHRAE active.

5. What advice would you give an individual that is just starting out in ASHRAE?

As a spouse, get involved and support. Follow the advice of Past President Bill Goodman and his wife,

Molly: “Enjoy ASHRAE.”

Page 6: €¦ · · Promoted ASHRAE Winter Conference – Las Vegas, January 28th – February 1st. · Asked Chapter to Vote on $5/Year Dues Increase from $35 to $40 due to cost increases

Please search for ASHRAE Arkansas in the Facebook search bar, or visit our website at www.arkansasashrae.org and click on the Facebook link

in top, right-hand corner of the home page.

6. What is your future ASHRAE plans?

I know the regional meeting is every 12 years, which will be 2026, and I think I am going into hiding --

unless Robin Mizell, Gina Fullerton and Margaret Harrison want my help.

7. Please describe any humorous and/or significant historical events that you recall from your ASHRAE

experiences.

The Monterrey Chapter hosted the 2006 conference in Cancun. On the last day, the spouse entertain-

ment was at a local Mexican restaurant for a cooking class at 9:00 a.m. The chef started us out by making a

fresh margarita and then gave us knives to make guacamole dip and then ceviche shrimp and then on to

fajitas and more margaritas. When it was time for the President’s Lunch, some of us did not make it. The

cooking class attendees that I remember were Paul and Karen Briscoe, Tammy Huggins, Margaret Harri-

son and Diane Cummins. It was a blast!!!!

FEATURED ARTICLE FROM YOUR

ARKANSAS ASHRAE LEADERSHIP

According to a study by the Federal Government on their own inventory of buildings, approximately 95% of the cost of owning a building is the maintenance, operation, insurance, financing, etc. The remain-ing 5% went to the construction of the building itself. With this information, it isn’t hard to see that a build-ing owner could really benefit from an ASHRAE Building Energy Quotient (bEQ). It’s easy for an owner to say “I need to make some upgrades to cut my energy cost.” But with an ASHRAE bEQ analysis, the owner can be presented with some actual energy savings measures that will help reduce the cost of owning their specific building. It will also provide the estimated costs and paybacks of the work. What makes an ASHRAE bEQ so powerful is that it will give a building owner a baseline/benchmark as-sessment of the buildings energy usage before the improvements are made and then an assessment after the improvements have been put in place. This makes it possible for the owner to track and show the ef-fectiveness of the improvements. Because the bEQ uses a consistent method of providing an energy anal-ysis, buildings within an owner’s portfolio can be compared to each other and re-evaluated over time to see if the improvements are getting the expected energy savings and results. If marketability is of importance to an owner, then a bEQ can help set a building apart from similar buildings in similar climates. The ASHRAE bEQ will give feedback on the buildings designed and meas-ured energy use and also show the building’s potential for energy improvements.

For more information on how owners can benefit from an ASHRAE Building Energy Quotient, you can

FEATURED ARTICLE FROM YOUR

ARKANSAS ASHRAE LEADERSHIP

Building Energy Quotient (bEQ) is ASHRAE’s building ener-

gy labeling program designed to provide information for a

building’s energy use and produce a rating, graded A+ thru

F. bEQ was originally established by an ASHRAE committee

made up of building design and performance professionals

with knowledge of the Energy Star and European Union la-

beling programs. The program was further developed with

input from energy modeling experts, energy managers, utili-

ties and government agencies.

The majority of building ownership costs occur after con-

struction (95% based on the U.S Federal Facilities Council

Technical Report No. 142). One of the largest expenses to

operating a building can be the utility costs. bEQ can help

building owners assess their building’s energy efficiency,

which can impact the operational cost and return on invest-

ment.

There are two separate assessment workbooks available, one

to evaluate “As Designed” potential and another for evaluat-

ing “In Operation” performance.

The “As Designed” rating assesses a building’s envelope and

systems. It does not depend on a building’s occupancy or

operating conditions. The results are calculated based on a

simulated, standardized energy model compared to a base-

line. The rating can only be improved by upgrading the

building envelope and/or building systems.

The “In Operation” rating assesses the building’s envelope

and systems as well but includes a component of how the

building actually functions. This rating requires metered

energy data for the buildings after at least 12-18 months of

operation. The rating can be improved by upgrading the

building envelope and/or modifications to how the building is

operated and maintained.

ASHRAE bEQ Seminar on Friday, January 20th, presented

by Distinguished Lecturer Hoy Bohanon.
