~c. □e ~- ADA ROUND

The Federation's first dance for all class members,

held April 6, went very well. We had class members

from Genesee Dancers, Country Twirlers, Cloverleaf Sqs.,

Coyy Cats, Teen Twirlers, Magic Squares, Rainbow Sqs.,

EKC-O Squares, and Village Squares. Jerry Carmen

called a good dance for these new dancers and kept them

smiling all evening. We hope that this will become

an annual event.

NEEDED: A chairman for Dance-O-Rama, 1979, Anyone interested?? Guaranteed fun mixed with work-call 247-7044 for more information.

See everyone at Brockport on the 6th.

IN THE ROCHESTER AREA

Many Advanced Level callers who responded to the Callerlab survey made interesting comments about the activity. Several were upset that some callers are trying to call Advanced Level when they don't even know how to dance it. There was strong feeling that a caller should be able to dance Advanced if he is going to teach it. In addition, it was noted that some callers seem to be going into Advanced simply because it appears to be the "in thing" to do, and that they are forcing Advanced Level on dancers who cannot even dance Mainstream Plus and, in some cases, Mainstream. The result is dancers receiving poor teaching and~or dancing experience and thus becoming discouraged with Advanced Level; they in turn tell their friends and an entire area can quickly become anti-Advanced.

There was strong objection to the Advanced List not being followed in Advanced rooms at festivals and conventions - some callers are tossing in many extra calls which only their own dancers know. While no one objects to callers using additional calls at their home programs, festivals have dancers attending from many areas, and it is felt the Basic Advanced List should be strictly followed here.

Very strong objections were raised to callers in Advanced rooms at festivals teaching primarily new experimental calls and ignoring or only briefly using the Basic Advanced calls. This was felt to be very unfair to dancers in the hall, who were there expecting Advanced Level to be called, and also misleading to other dancers who think they are doing

'Advanced Level when they really are not. Objection was also raised about callers labelling their own dances "Advanced" when either none or only a few Basic Advanced calls were ever used.

Overall,_ it is felt that dancer and caller education as to what Advanced Level is and promotion of the Basic Advanced List is vital to having these problems disappear.

(The above is a portion of CHALLENGE CHATTER from the AMERICAN SQUARE DANCE MAGAZINE, April 1978).

Spring is here! Classes are graduating, and new dancers are entering the clubs. I'll always have a sentimental spot for the new dancers, for I can remember when I went thru class, I went thru class, I went thru class. Thru class three times? No, not really, but Art Harris, my teacher, said it seemed like it.

Soo, I am taking this opportunity to help the new dancers by putting down a few important tips on the dress and etiquette for square dancers.

Men's Dress

1, Shoes - necessary, especially if you want to appear gracious in de-feet.

2, Belt - in most CRses necessary to stop a disaster 3, Pants - absolutely necessary, if for no other reason

but to cover your shorts. 4. Shirt - should have collar, cuffs, or both. 5, Hair - not necessary, but sideburns are, for balance 6. Hat - not necessary, unless you are dancing up a

storm.

Ladies' Dress

1. Dresses - are necessary, mini, maxi, many. 2. Petticoats - should only show at the bottom. 3, Belt - necessary to break up the contours. 4. Hair - teased or re-teased, on head, any shade. 5, Fancy Laces - not necessary on shoes without laces. 6. Anything else, true or false, should be hidden.

Man or Lady

1. Wigs - I don't want to split hairs on this but if you do wear one, be careful on a "dive thru". saw one hanging from a guy's cuff link.

Etiguette

1. Don't ehter a set that already has four couples unless you intend to round dance.

2. Always put your best foot forward, if you have one. 3, Don't allemande left your left hand lady if she

is right handed 4. Don't bow to your partner unless you are facing her

or him. 5, Don't goof up a set unless you know what vou ~Ye

doing. 6. Don't imitate the caller; he is supposed to stand

still. 7, Don't star thru with your left foot. 8. Don't whistle for your corner if he or she is out

of position. 9, Don't walk out of a set, unless the other three

couples leave you standing alone. JD. Don't talk during a dance unless you can hear what

you are saying. That way you won't offend anyone else.

If you follow these rules, you won't go wrong more than once, I think.

To the new dancers: Don't believe all you hear about me. Nobody, but nobody, could dance that lou-say. (lou-say ••• a French worK meaning "it's better to pay, than to dance with him")

::~ Thanks anyway,

Hal Abberger {::-.''

CLUB Batavia Twi,I e,1

IAITMIA.,1'.Y•

Seems good to see so many of the winter vacationers back on the dance scene, Welcome back,

Remember May 13th, it will be our dance with the live band and Larry Dunn. We are looking forward to a real good dance and a lot of fun. If you can join us at the John Kennedy School on Vine St. in Batavia, we would love to have you,

Also, coming up is our Installation of Officers on May 20th at the Moose on Ellicott Street in Batavia, Preceding the dance will be a closed dinner and installation of officers. Dancing will start at 8:00 PM with an after party following. All are welcome. Hope to see you,

The Campout scheduled for May 27 & 28 has been cancelled.

BELLES 'II BEAUS

ROCHESTER.M.Y.~ Be/lei g Beaui

Hi Belles N Beaus,

Sure hope everyone has purchased their tickets for Dance-0-Rama, and have May 6th circled or squared on their calendar. Each year this event gets better and more people deserve a great deal of credit for their involvement. Too often the workers behind the scenes "are not recognized," Participation is a form of saying thank you, and DOR is certainly a fun-filled day, easy on the pocketbook,

Asked a few couples about the big St. Pat's Dance at Art's on Grand Island and was told that the entire group had their usual great time; must .conclude, however, if a prayer was attached to each toast to good St. Patrick, then we shall positively have a full house in that grand place in the sky! One of the "Belles" from Rochester, Marge Hurley, won a bottle of champagne as a door prize.

On March 12th, the Church of the Master, was the scene of a square dance demonstration. Jack Sadwick ha(i many couples executing the simple basics and really enjoying the Fun Nite, as it was called, The participants representing the Belles N Beaus were Bev & Walt Smith, Nancy & Larry Root, Ethel & Russ Heffer, and Stella & Harold Elich,

Thanks to Barb & Ed Butenhof for making our St. Patrick's Dance on the 13th a success with quantrille demonstration and dance, Their enthusiasm is catching and many couples were seeking further information, Ed has the answers. For those interested, call 244-1375,

Must say that the Belles N Beaus Class of 1977-78 will be .a grand addition to our Club, after the big graduation on May 8. Can't say that Chet and I were as sharp and confident as these youngsters are 'nowadays' ! Our hearty congratulations and "welcome to the club" and future fun in the square dancing world. I can honestly say, "I've never met an unfriendly square dancer."

(Continued in next column) 5

NEWS Our Trail End Dance on May 19th will be a double

gala affair, for the Belles N Beaus will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary at this time. We would like to see as many past presidents and officers in attendance as possible, regardless of their affiliations or membership in other clubs. Come celebrate with us at the 3 Acre Party House. Old members or persons may call Jo Ann Esch 621-6456 or Marilyn Walker 392-8054 for information.

Learned from Art Harris that plans for a Holiday Inn weekend, June 2, 3 & 4, is t~king shape. The place is Olean, N.Y. and Art Harris and Jack Barnes are calling. Interested parties see Art· Harris for full details.

Wonderful surprise for many of us to see and enjoy a tip with Bernice and Johnny Moylan on March 20th. Gee, did you notice that those "Floridans" dance the same as we do? Not better, of course, but the moves were the same! Bernice said they were combining some dental work with family holiday pleasure--latter the pleasure,

A fond welcome back to Doralyn and Jim Hill, Alex & June Elich, and Ethel & Russ Heffer, after a gala two weeks in our 50th State, Hawaii. Sure would like seconds on that vacation for Chet and me.

Good to see the dirty snows disappear, and to hear the geese honking. Spring is in the air, and, incidentally, yours truly, B.S. (ooops) will be spending 4' days in mid-May at the Art & Craft Sale & Show at Greece Town Mall. If you're inquisitive, come see what I do on cold winter nites, beside break down square dance sets!

According to our new schedule, we won't see too much of our fellow-dancers during the month of June, so I feel that a certain couple should be commended and congratulated on a feat which is becoming rare indeed, especially in todays's world. Ooo Wow - considering that Chet and I are only half-way there, Marion and John Butler have really made their wedded bliss of 40 years a beautiful and envied accomplishment. MidJune will be marked ruby-red for two wonderful people, who entered the mad world of square dancing in 1957. Congratulations, you two lovers!

Because we will not have any club dances in June, this is my last column before the summer break, I must mention a good deal for those couples intereRted in square dance workshops. Whether you're a 'veteran' or new graduate, a little polish sure helps anytime. Once again, Art is offering three Wednesday evening workshops at Holmes Road School to finish out the month of May. The dates are May 17th, 24th, and 31st, at 8 PM Only $10.00 per couple for the three nites of fun and and instruction. If interested, sign up at the club dance or other dancers may call Marilyn & Bill Walker, 392-8054.

Thinking SUMMER •.• in case we miss spring (as we did in '77) an Alfred weekend is scheduled for Aug. 12th and lJth. Buffet and dancing on Sat. the 12th and picnic and games on the 13th will make both days lots of fun. Art Harris will be the caller and reservations are necessary. Details on camping and motel accomodations will be handled by the Haddletons or Walkers.

Once again, happy dancing during the weeks ahead; have a nice summer and may you all 'spin thru your chain reactions',

Until September .•. Betty dnd Chet Selbert

Barb Indovina

Counflg Dsnce,1 of Rocnegte,

As the newest club to join the Federation we want to say "hello" and invite you to join us ail, any of our regular or special dances throughout the year.

Barb & Ed Butenhof attended CALLERLAB in St. Louis and sat in on the contra committee meetings---and attended a fantastic dance Tuesday evening. Each year we find more interest in contras as a change of pace-they are here to stay and I dare say will be an expanding part of our program. Two problems surfaced at the committee meeting, 1. callers don't often have a chance to dance contras and don't have a "feel" for them. 2. Since most callers want to use the sight method in their calling they realize they have not developed the skill for prompting (as in round dance cueing). Experienced successful callers don't want to be embarrassed by calling contras wrong in front of their clubs, Perhaps interested dancers could set up small basement parties so a potential caller could practice. One other suggestion would be to have a mystery ride to one of our Thursday night dances and learn the easy way.

(Continued in next column) 6

Our club celebrated the bicentenial alliance with France on April Fools Day with members of the New York State rifle brigade units coming from Hudson Falls, Rome, Syracuse and Webster. The soldiers (and one sailor) were dressed in authentically reproduced uniforms straight from the pages of history, I can't say I envied the ladies in their tightly laced stays, Our grand march with over 150 people was a real thrill, Rich Castner our dancing master and Blackthorn Ceilidh Band also dressed for the occasion,

The #2 feature was dance music workshop co-sponsored by Wakefield Dancers and the Golden Link Song Society and led by Ms. Marshall Barrons from Stanford, Conn, From the all-day session 23 musicians emerged to play reels, jigs and hornpipes in the best dance tempos for our evening dance, The hall was filled to overflowing--lots of newcomers and the musicians had time to play and dance. Tom Bohrer was dance master of the evening teaching dances published by John Playford (late 1600s).

We do hope to see many of you in the contra hall at Dance-0-Rama in the campus school. If you want to WATCH us dance come early in the afternoon for we will be doing our favorites, Between 4-5 Blackthorn Ceilidh Band will play and we will invite you to join us on the floor. About 7:JO we will workshop dances especially for square dancers and most of the evening program we hope you will join us, Blackthorn will play at least an hour in the evening--maybe more. Ted Sannella, a traditional caller from Boston will be featured. Ted worked with modern square dancers at the Atlantic City Convention last summer and I'm sure you will enjoy his mate, rial. He has created many of his own dances, certainly not traditional, called "triplet". They are three couple "all position" dances which are very challenging indeed,

Remember, your non-square dancing friends can come and dance in the contra hall for a special price, Newcomers learn contras quickly, so bring your neighbors.

Paid Announcement SWAP .... Square dance items. Will set up a date in June. If interested, call Sally's Square Line Shop, J/+2-1561. Coffee clutch,

la Copy Cati Well April 8 was a night we looked forward to

with much anticipation! We were not disappointed!! Our annual dessert social with the men making the desserts was another gastronomical delight. We all came away feeling a few pounds heavier but everyone agreed it was a:nuther fun nite!!

On April 22 our Copy Kittens became of age and graduated to the Copy Cats!! Chip Kellogg monitored their growth. He weaned them on do-si-do and allemandes and finally after several months they went to solid food (tea-cup-chain etc,). They are an enthusiastic group and we welcome them to the Copy Cats.

Thanks to Ray & Emma Schlessing who have taken over refreshments again - they continue to do a superb job,

FINAL REMINDER - - - Hope you've saved the date!! On~ 20 at 8 PM GARNET MAY (a Canadian caller) will be calling at Schroeder High School, 875 Ridge Road East. Hope to see you there!!!

"Barefoot in the Park" is what we're calling our special dance this month. We'll be dancing in the ski lodge at Northampton P~rk, from 8 until 11 PM on Saturday May 20, This is a change from our usual Monday night dancing. We would like to have lots of company, so please come and dance with us, The view is exceptional, and we've ordered a perfect night from the head honcho at the weather station.

The ski lodge is located just off Route 31 on Hubbell Street, only a few miles east of Brockport, and west of Rochester.

There will be no Monday night dance on May 22 nor May 29,

Graduation for our class was held on April 24, when we initiated nine new couples into the Glass Slippers. In spite of the ferocity of the past winter, they finished the required lessons and are ready to be a part of our club. We've already gotten to know them during the past year, so we're delighted to welcome them.

How happy we are to see our friends who are reluctantly leaving Florida to come back to the cool north, We've missed you. It's great to have you in a square again! I must admit though, that some of us get a bit~ when we look at your golden tan!!!

It's getting close to the time when we undergo that electrifying experience called "Midnight Madness," Start getting plenty of rest so you can stay up real late, dance your feet off, and eat hot dogs with Betty and Ron Fotch out at Spring Creek. That's a f'un night for the Glass Slippers and all of their friends from other clubs. (Betty guarantees good weather for the weekend,)

Our sympathy goes to Ron and Barbie Hurne for the loss of Ron's dad,

Word has it that Bob DuBois, Chuck Si~vernail, Betty Brady, Val Brady, and Alice and Ray Heck are all recovering from physical problems they've suffered this winter. We hope they'll all be dancing again soon.

Our co-president, George Burch, has been very busy working on the D-0-R decorations, Be sure to attend at least part of the day. You'll enjoy i-t. See you there!

The Pairs and Squares from Syracuse will be our guest for the evening.

There will be no dancing on May 27th because of the school being closed for Spring recess.

June 3rd will be a regular dance nite with Bill Wilcox calling,

Contra Corner

by Ed Butenhof

CONTRAS at CALLERLAB? You bet! The recent CALLERLAB session in St. Louis was primarily meetings, listening, talking - sometimes arguing with callers from all over the country. The only dancing was a contra danc~ after the meetings were over one night. It was supposed to be just a demonstration of contras lasting for an hour at the most. We started at 9:30 PM and at 2 AM they were still going (while yours truly stumbled off to bed).

Twenty of us called and over 100 callers and their spouses danced contras and loved them. Many of the callers were seeing and dancing contras for the first time, but they agreed "contras are here to stay, they're fun, they're relaxing, and they're sociable." There's something about moving smoothly to those jigs and reels that grows on one--even becomes hypnotic,

This CALLERLAB session also saw the first meeting of the Traditional Dance committee. Most of the callers there had somewhat different ideas about what traditional dancing is, but that was because every part of the country has somewhat different traditions. South Carolina, Colorado, Michigan, Ohio, California, Maine, New York, Texas, Wisconsin, Massachusetts and many more were represented--each with their own traditional dancing, but in each case alive and well, A fascinating experience!

Contras (along with some traditional dancing) will also be at Dance-0-Rama all day, Try some on May 6. Ted Sannella from Boston is one of the best!

Our caller for these workshops is Jon McNally.

Our trail end dance this year will be on May 20th, Let's all turn out for this one.

Kuntry Kuzzins graduated 19 new members into the Club on April 22, a good time was had by all present.

On Thursday April 27th with Jon McNally calling we presented demonstration dances at the Newark Development Center for the entertainment of patients and spectators at the Center.

We wish to thank Jon McNally "our caller" for the fine work in bringing a new class into the club. Thank you Jon.

* Leukemia Dance Report

The excitement was in the air Saturday night, March 18 as people gather at Sperry High School, Henrietta, for the Jrd Annual Leukemia Dance. The rooms were filled with a colorful array of dresses and shirts ·as dancers squared up to dance to the tremendous calls of Jerry Carmen, Myron Huss, Ben McGilvery, and Bill Wilcox. Round dance cuers, Betty Carmen, Peg Huss, and Bob Slorncenski were on hand to do a great job of cueing rounds.

This ~'ear the theme of Sesame Square came to life with the many, many fantastic decorations which decorated the cafeteria and gyms. By the end of the night, the old fashioned street lights, and park benches became a welcomed sight to the colorful and playful Sesame Street characters that mingled through the crowds. Beautiful dangles made by Bob Vincent noted the theme and dancers were able to purchase these to take home as well as many other items displayed by the Ironda Shoppe. A big thanks goes to all those who worked so hard!

The magic hour of 10-11 P.M. found the callers passing the microphone during the grand finale, while dozens of prizes were given away between tips. Even the round dance cuers were able to add to the fun by pdssing the microphone during the rounds.

Congratulations! - Go to BILL REEP, a dancer who won the beautiful hand-hooked rug through purchasing a ticket at Genesee Dancers, Among the various other winners were Nora Slorncenski (Bob's wife) and caller Jerry Carmen - (Jerry sure is lucky, he won the fireplace last year). There were also several other winners from many different clubs, which noted the variety of clubs present. To all those who didn't take home a prize, we wish you more luck next year.

The clubs presented with a beautiful silver tray, for corning the farthest distance (with at least one set) and for having the greatest attendance present (p~rcentage wise) were Which Way Whirlers from Pavilion and Rainbow Squares of Rochester. Congratulations! (Cloverleaf Squares and Merry Mixers tied for second in the greatest attendance and only missed by about 5%). Let's see who wins next year? A special Hawaiian hand carved ink and pen set was donated and presented by Bob and Helen Ellicott. (They had just arrived from Hawaii with the Circulators that afternoon). This gift was presented to a couple from Concord, Mass. for corning the furthest distanc~.

Over $2,600.00 was raised this year to help fight Leukemia/Cancer in children. We want to thank each of you for making this dance a success. We realize that many area clubs felt that since I had broken my ankle, and had surgery, there would not be a Leukemia Dance scheduled for this date, therefore scheduled other events. However, we were greatly pleased by the tremendous turn-out. Over 50 squares were tallied dancing in the gyms, while rounds and lines went into full swing in the round dance room. Next years Leukemia Dance is ten ta ti vely set for March 24th. So, many clubs may wish to work their schedules accordingly. We thank ALL CLUBS for helping us by announcing the dance and with the advanced ticket sales. It really takes "team" effort and when the objective is cancer in kids, it's more i~portant than ever to do a good job.

CURE would like us to thank all the callers and cuers for doing a~ job. They would also like us to thank EACH dancer, as they are what it's all about. Without them we couldn't have such a tremendous dance. THANKS too from Jim and me and we hope to see you all when I get back to dancing in the fall.

Sincerely,

Jim and Connie Harper ®

Lima G,and Squa,e1 This month's news flash will have to be short and

sweet. Short because I haven't much to say and sweet, because aren't all square dancers "sweet".

To our old class/new members a word of advice -try to keep square dancing as much as possible through the summer. All of you are doing great and it's amazing how much one can forget in a couple of months.

Our officers have informed me that they are making plans for our club to dance at least once a month during the summer. Please be sure to check next month's column for more on this.

To all our guests who have been helping us fill the hall on Friday nights, many thanks for stopping by. Hope to see all of you again soon on "our corner" or "yours".

That's it folks!! Remember, there are only two Fridays we dance this month -- May 5 and 19 -- as May 12 is travel night. C'mon club, let's all try to do some traveling that week -- this includes yours truly making an effort, also. And the 19th is, of course, our famous Trail End Pot Luck Supper, as well as, the last dance. Let's all make a real effort to attend both. The food is fabulous and~one has ever gone hungry.

Bye for this month,

Paul and Barbara Kolstee

I SQUARES Magic Squa,eg

April 29 was a happy night for us all! We had twenty three people in our graduating cla9s. After a long winter they finally made it. They are now full fledged square dancers. Our best wishes to them and to all the new graduates.

May 14 is our big Super Sunday dance. Marv Lindner of California will join Bob Ellis for two halls of mainstream and mainstream plus 1 & 2. It will be at the Manchester Primary School, Lehigh Ave, 9 Manchester. Ken and Carol Guyre from Syracuse will start the round dance party at 1:30 while Marv and Bob will call from 2:00-5:00 PM. It will cost you $5,00 for the afternoon, but we promise you your moneys worth. Why not plan to bring Mom out to Magic Squares for an afternoon of dancing and fun.

We would like to mention that starting in June through September we will be dancing the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month at the Manchester Methodist Church.

Our best wishes to Barb and Bill Kane on the birth of their daughter Carolyn Emily. She arrived April 5,

May the month of May bring you all nothing but flowers and sunshine in your life. Happy Mother's Day to all you Mom's. Keep on dancin',

Bev & Tom Cheney

Merry Mixerg

High lights of the month are May 6th Dance-0-Rama in Brockport and May 15th is our Jrd Reunion dance.

The Hobo Supper and dance was a great success, the Class and Club really had a lot of laughs at the costumes so~e of us wore. Joyce Tyner and Edger Wardwell were chosen King and Queen Hobos.

April 24th WE:: had an Ice Cream Social.

The weekend of Memorial day, a group of our dancers ventured down to Nashville, Tennesee for dancing and dining, by bus.

The "Trail End Dinner Dance" will end up our season this year at the "Green Lantern Inn" in Fairport on June 9th.

Happiness is dancing with Merry Mixers.

Marie Dickinson

Pionee, Squareg How lucky can you get? Our own Bill and Dottie

Reep were winners of that beautiful rug raffled at the Leukemia dance. Congratulations to you both.

Congratulations are most certainly in order for our wonderful graduation class. They have worked hard all year and it really shows. Graduation was a big occasion for all and we are very happy and proud to welcome-the class into the clu9. All of us are looking forward to some dancing together.

May 16th is dangle night and this month is the glow worm dangle. Come and dance with us for a fun night.

See you in our square,

Bob and Mary Ann Beikirch

Ptomenading B'g

We have new bee's in the hive! Congratulations to our proud new graduates and welcome to the club.

We would like to thank Bob & Georgian Abels of Drake Stree Motors for their donations to our Black Light dance.

May 19th is our Pot Luck Supper. Bring a dish to pass and your appetite! Last year the gastronomical delights were plentiful.

Our caller and taw, Ron and Betty Fotch, attended a Caller Lab in the big K.C. • Was'nt it lucky that their daughter, Hope, just happens to live there?

Have you ever seen bee's vanning, flying, buzzing, stinging, yes, but vanning? May you have many hours of pleasure W & M.

Dick & Donna Pringle

Rainbow Square,

The Rainbow Squares are pleased to have won again the trophy for best attendance at the Leukemia Dance. Not only does this give us a sense of pride at supporting such a worthwhile cause, but also gives us a beautiful silver tray to display from time to time. Connie Harper and her many helpers are to be con~atulated for doing such a tremendous job to make this a fun, enjoyable dance. Even from a wheel chair Connie can keep her fingers on the pulse of every detail,

April has come and gone and the rigors of winter are seeming further and further away. Some members of the club are rushing to meet the warm weather by greeting it half way. Bob, Gail, and Laurie Ott spent a couple of weeks enjoying the warm beaches of South Carolina, while Norm and Edna Coates spent another week basking in the sun - this time at Myrtle Beach,

Our Daffy-Dil dance was lots of fun and lived up to its name, Ever since returning from Caller Lab, Ken has put together the daffiest dance steps imaginable! Hope soon we either learn what he is calling or he starts calling what we are dancing! Spring flowers were in abundance thanks to Art and Joan Gerber so we really got in the seasonal mood. We certainly enjoyed having the class join us and hope they agree with us that it was a dilly of an evening.

Remember the important dates in May. Our class graduates on May 10 and will really get a chance to strut their stuff then. They will then dance with the club during the month of May. They are a great group so let's all turn out to welcome them heartily into the club. May 24 is the Trail End danc'e at t.he Green Lantern Inn in Fairport. It would be grand to see all club members (past and present) there. Should be relaxed, fun evening.

March 29th was a happy evening for our club, It was graduation night and we were delighted to have the class dancing with us as club members-and did they dance up a storm! They've been taking lessons since last fall and are an enthusiastic, high-spirited group of quite accomplished dancers, with positioning as one of their strong points (Thanks, Ted Whitacre!). These couples are a most welcome addition to the roster of Advanced dancers in this area.

We also welcome into membership several other couples who've learned the Advanced basics and have frequently been our guests during the past year. The growing list of paid memberships have allowed us to plan ahead for a fine season of dancing with the marvelous Ross Howell as our regular caller and several traveling Advanced/Challenge callers for special additional dances. Watch for notice of Ron Libby, Tim Scholl and Joe Uebelacker dances in the fall.

Even earlier than that, watch for fliers on our annual spring Open House--the Jack of Hearts "Spring Fever" dance. Planned as an introduction to Advanced Level Square Dancing, it will feature position dancing and introduce several of the calls used in Advanced dancing. Come on out and try it if you've been thinking about sampling a little.more in square dancing--or if you're already dancing at the advanced level, bring some friends who'd like to try it. This has been a popular event in the past and our guests of previous open houses have said they enjoyed it very much. It will be held on Wednesday May 17th, 8:00-10:JO at the Southlawn School on Rawlinson Ave. with Ross Howell doing the honors.

(Continued in next column)

The Jack of Hearts welcomes as guests or members any who have learned the basic calls of Advanced square dancing.

Hope to see you there!

FIFTEEN YEARS OF BESITATION BEFORE FINDING DANCING HAPPINESS

Unlike the fella that "tried it.one but didn't like it", Larry and Theresa Yacobelli, of 1025 Whitlock Road, Irondequoit, were first asked to square dance by best frie11ds Jack and Pat Cox of Utica - nearly 20 years ago. They both were completely adamant -dancing wasn't their thing - camping was! Wouldn't try ii::,

Then the wheel of fate turned in '6J, bringing the Yacobellis to Irondequoit and in contact with newfound friends, Tony and Millie Uttaro. That couple really were ready to try their hand at the craft, but several trips to Hilton a week for initial sessions failed to motivate our "profile caller" or his wife. Still wouldn't,

The '72 soccer season, strange as it may seem, provided a certain set of circumstances that would alter the lives of Larry and Terry. While watching son John play in the City's soccer league one evening, Larry was casually "Yaaking" with another father, Tom Trainor. He must have described the thrills and advantages of dancing with a special skill, because soon our caller and his wife were learning the "basics" with the "Swingin' Eights" of Irondequoit, They had decided to try it!

By '73, the couple had graduated, and the closets at home were filling up with petticoats, western or country style shirts and trousers, skirts and all of the other garb. Larry, never know as a "shower Caruso", was suddenly humming a. lot around the house, and for about a year harbored a secret (he thought) desire to learn calling. Terry was not surprised when Larry, the day after his lovely daughter's wedding, took off for Troy, New Hampshire. He was to meet Al Brundage and Earl Johnston, having already agreed to attend their five day callers' school,

That summer of '74 proved to be hectic one, but complete the sessions he did, and promptly returned to Irondequoit and completed the necessary details for forming his own teen group. Friend Don Oestreich helped by "hiring a hall", the final needed ingredient for training and graduating a class,

On April 16, 1975, Larry did graduate his first class, the "Grand Squares," and you might say he did it fifteen years too late! They had finally learned that they loved every minute of it!

This group did not stay together, rather they went on to the advance classes of the Jack of Hearts,

Not until 1977, did he get another group together -this time adults - and they will graduate this Spring as the nucleus of a new club in the Rochester area - "Thunderbird Squares,"

Larry's reason for becoming a caller was to try to provide a measure of enjoyment to people while enjoying himself. He considers himself a round dancer and his favorite Nationally know callers are Marshall Flippo and Vaughn Parris. He dances mainstream, plus one and like to call the same. He says he does not dance as often as he likes. He is not a member of Caller lab and his hobby is photography,

Singing Squa,eg Singing Squares had a total of five dances during

March, two were Special Events .. St. Patrick's night brought out all the Irishmen in their green outfits. Everyone was from "Good Old Ireland" that night. We even changed our name to O'Fratta for the occasion.

March 29th was our Luau dance for class and club. Many clubs were represented. Our Presidents had just returned from a trip to Hawaii, so the decorations were for real. Palm trees and dancers swayed to Mike Callahan's Hawaiian music, and Wanda kept time pushing their twin sons in the stroller. The babies were wide awake all evening, which proves they are real square dance fans. Everyone received colorful leis to match their outfits, I overheard some men complaining because the girls wore "mu-mus" and not grass skirts; but fellows--you can't have everything! At refreshment time, the Hawaiian theme was still carried out. All the goodies made you feel you really were dining out on the islands.

A reminder that on May Jrd round dancing begins at Singing Squares. Class instruction with Mike Liberti every Wednesday night 7:J0-8:00. Mike will also be cueing rounds throughout the evening. Al Howe will call the squares May Jrd and 17th. Mike Callahan will call May 10th, 24th and Jlst. Hope everyone will join us at Thomas Edison School, 1612 Buffalo Road.

SPECIAL BULLETIN -- FRIEN"DS, ROMANS AND COUNTRYMEN" lend us your feet! The Singing Squares cordially invite you to dance at our Italian Night on Wed,, June 7th with Al Howe. There will be entertainment, door prizes and delicious Italian food. All class and club members are welcome. We hope to see "all - a you Pisans" there, cause everything is gonna be "thats-a-nh;e," John and Lorene Fratta

Swinging BB's

With May flowers blooming everywhere we have had our share of fun.

Four of our sun-loving members, Herb and Kay Wendt, and Jim and Mary Messer, are sporting tans from recent trips to Florida.

Everyone wore their greenery on our March 18th St. Patrick's party and had a great time dancing away the evening.

Please mark May 12 on your calendar and bring your friends (or best enemies) to our Open House.

Keep open the weekend of June 9-11 for our spring campout. More details about this later •

Your reporters,

Ernie and Dottie Willett

Swinging Singles "SNAP-E-ROG" anyone? Pony-tailed, saddle-shoed

Swinging Singles slipped into the fifties with some oldy square dancing calls on March 27, When not "shuffling the deck," we found that we could still gyrate to "Let's All do the Twist," and jitter bug to "Rock Around The Clock." (Who was the swinger in penny loafers?) We're glad Cloverleaf Squares joined us for a fun dance back into time.

Boots 'n Slippers, Rainbow Squares and Country Twirlers were our guests on April 10, It's fun to square up with such an enthusiastic group,

Diplomas, a yummy cake and a number of surprises greeted our class members on graduation day, April 17, Congratulations and a HEARTY WELCOME!

Swinging Singles squared up to its 10th anniversary on April 24. A celebration? You bet! Cake, streams, plus seeing old friends highlighted the evening.

The hills of West Virginia are alive with the sound of music and are calling our president, Tim Craig, Tim will be moving soon to a new position in Bluefield, West Virginia, Our vice president, Bev Linehan, will assume Tim's responsibilities, We'll miss you, Tim. The club wishes you all good things.

Here's to dancing through a sunny summer!

Kathy P,S, For all you newcomers to square dancing,

"Snaperoo" is a call that was introduced in the fifties. It's a star through.

Tecumseh Squa,ei

Welcome new graduates! We've watched your progress these many weeks and had r~ached one definite conclusion your beautiful! We're so happy to have you join us, For all of you club members, be sure and introduce yourselves to these new members and welcome them with open arms, They des~rve it!

It's Dance-0-Rama time. There are two basic reasons for attending this annual dance, First, it is a Federation-sponsored dance and, since we are members of the Federation, we should support it, Secondly, it's fun! It really will be a terrific time. Hope to see you there. ·

TECUMSEH SQUARES (continued)

Is everybody ready for the subscription dance? Remember what that was? Stan Burdick (a national caller and really great) and Bruce Shaw (our own super caller) will share the mike on May 23rd. The admission to the dance includes a year subscription to the American Square Dance Magazine, of which Stan Burdick is editor. If you have a present subscription, it will be lengthened for an additional year. We've subscribed to this magazine for a number of years and found it very enjoyable as well as informative. It really helped with some of the offices we've held,

Are all of our wanderers back? It's almost time to start summer vacations now. It appears as though we have had some members of our cl.ub in Florida most of this past winter. Ask around and check the tans to find out who the wanderers are.

I really would like to add our congratulations and "work well done" to the La Villas and the Sedors for the excellent job they did on the Italian-Polish Pot Luck Dinner in April. It was terrific! They put in a lot of thought and effort and it showed! Thank

you. To Bill Sedor, hope you feel better.

We will start our weekly dance schedule in May. Hope all of you new graduates, as well as, seasoned dancers will join Bruce Shaw and Bob Slomcenski for these dances. If there are any special request, just talk to Bruce, He is always eager to help. The other eager-beavers, Bob and Nora will have a half-hour round dance workshop prior to the dances. They will start at ?:JO.

See you soon,

Ed and Sue Sulewski

P.S. Did you look around and see some very familiar people lately? Is is not a dream--some of our old friends who have ta.ken brush up courses, Welcome back--we really missed you!

Happy Springtime everyone! It was a long, cold, snowy winter, but we all surviyed despite the weather and are eagerly looking forward to our spring and summer activities.

First on our dance card is the Dance-0-Rama, to be held May 6th. Hope to see everyone there. Our club's big dance is the Spring Fling. We are looking forward to having our class members join us. This is our trail-end dance and guests are welcome. The theme for this year is Hawaii, Reservations are necessary and the deadline for obtaining them is May 2nd. Phone Frank Manicone (467-0966) for reservations and any further information.

Hobo Night was a lot of fun and a good oppor~ tunity for our class to get acquainted with club members,. Didn't realize we had so many "bums" in the club! The get-ups were really quite original and everyone enjoyed the box lunch.

The election of officers will take place May 9th, Please be sure to be there to vote.

Keep Swinging,

Jeanne & Bob McCondey

A T W H A T L E V E L A R E Y O U C A P A B L E O F D A N C I N G ?

To detennine where you will dance in maximum comfort, thoughtfully and carefully grade yourself on a scale of 1 to 7. You, and you alone, are qualified to make this determination so be honest with yourself I An average of five or more will indicate that you would enjoy that particular level of dancing. Three or less on any of the calls listed would indicate that you need more dancing exposure to it and should not chance goofing a square at a dance labeled in that category.

1. Never heard of the call, or have forgotten it. 2. Have heard the call, but would need a walk-thru at least. 3. Could dance it with three strong dancing couples to guide on. 4. If it were to be called directionally I could handle it. 5. I can dance it as long as the others in my square do not go astray. 6. You call it - I'll dance it! 7. I know the call thoroughly, can explain it and/or help others if they falter.

Square dancers everywhere are indebted to CALLERLAB for providing UB with the above calls and categories. There are others, of course, such as SEI'S IN ORDIIB. and SQUARE DANCE SYSTOO. This manner of deternrl.ning your own qualifications and abilities in various lists is unlimited -- by using it you can classify yourself from Basic Fifty to the highest Challenge.
