Definitions• Ozone therapy is the use of medical

grade ozone (highly reactive pure 03) to create healing and regeneration within the body.

• Prolozone is a new phrase combining the word ozoneozone and the Latin word prioli prioli which means to regenerate or rebuild.

History• Ozone was first discovered in 1840 by Christian Friedrich

Schonbein.• In 1932, Swiss dentists first used ozonated water as a

disinfectant.• In 1950, two German doctors developed the first ozone

generator for medical use.• European clinics have practiced ozone therapy for 50

years or more.• Ozone therapy Ozone therapy was first introduced in the US in the early

1980s, and has been increasingly used ever since.• Prolozone therapy, developed by Frank Shallenberger

MD, is a combination of ozone therapy , neural therapy and prolotherapy

Uses of Ozone Therapy

Ozone has been shown to be highly successful in a wide variety of clinical conditions:•Diabetic foot ulcers•Dental root canal infections & chronic gingivitis•Elephantiasis•Bedsores, psoriasis, eczema•Tinnitus, vertigo, migraines•Dyspnea of any origin

Page 11: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Prolozone is a mixture of Ozone and other active ingredients:•Procaine•B 12•B6•Dextrose•Homeopathics•others

0zone (O3)• Unstable & needs extra electrons• Creates peroxides that penetrate membranes• Oxidizes NADH to NAD & generates O2• This process of hyper-oxygenation and NADH

oxidation drives the cell into an elevated ATP production mode.

• Given the right nutrients and anti-inflammatories, the cell heals itself and the surrounding tissue.

Page 14: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Procaine• Blocks pain• Stabilizes and restores damaged

neurological membrane potentials (NEURO reset)

Page 15: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Vitamin B 12• B12 is water-soluble & safest form is

hydroxocobalamin• Critical to healthy nerves and red blood cells• Utilized in protein metabolism• Promotes healthy collagen formation• Utilized in inflammation reduction within cells• Is bright red in its natural form

Page 16: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Vitamin B6• Vitamin B6 is water-soluble• Vital for conversion of food to energy• Utilization of proteins• Important for collagen formation

Page 17: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Dextrose• Blocks the capsaicin receptor• Inhibits substance P• Blocks cyclic inflammation• Tightens bonds between collagen-rich

tissue i.e. tendons , ligaments, cartilage & joint capsules

Page 18: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Homeopathics• Homeopathic anti-inflammatories• Regenerative• Traumeel: pain-reducing homeopathic• Zeel: cartilage-rebuilding homeopathic

Page 19: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Why Prolozone?• Pain reduction• Tissue regeneration• Avoid surgery• Cost responsibility• Rapid recovery• Patient demand- there is a transition

happening• Less is more

Page 20: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Complications of Surgery• Surgical error• Complications- bleeding, infection, others• Pain• Scar tissue• Decreased function and range of motion• Delay return to normal activity (recovery)• Nerve damage • Other

Who Benefits from Prolozone?• Everyone, Everywhere!

Page 24: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Common Sports Injuries

Page 25: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Sprains/strain/pulls/tears/fracture

All tissue it designed with give & have elasticity.

Sprains, strains holes, tears and even fractures are result of the forces of injury overcoming the elasticity of the tissue involved.

How To MakeOzone machine: for most injections set 20 to 50 gammaSome research suggests higher settings, some lower **Vital to use pure oxygen and not a concentratorUse within 10 minutes of drawingThe mix: 0.5 to 1 mL of dextrose 5% 1-2 mL of B12 (5 mg/mL) 0.5-1 mL of B6 open ( 5 mg/mL) ½ - 1 vial of Traumeel and or Zeel 6-8 mL of procaine 2%

BASIC….. IT CAN BECOME VERY EXOTIC.

Where To Give• Everywhere it hurts.• Areas to avoid: the spinal column• C1-C4 no man’s zone….or woman’s• Avoid the vertebral arteries• avoid large vessels• Avoid direct injection into large nerves

* Can treat around them all day long.

Prolozone Summary• Bypasses the wall of inflammation and

edema• Nutrients and oxygen are placed at the point

of need for rebuilding tissue• Used for decades- with extensive research &

success• Safe• Effective 75 to 95% recovery• combined with proper diet and

supplementation success rate is even higher

Pearls by Dr. Robert Rowen1. Why do we often get immediate results that are lasting

when the effects of local anesthetic are gone in minutes?Answer: Procaine works instantly so you know that you got

your treatment in the right spot when you relieve the patient of pain from the injection. But when the pain doesn’t return after 30 to 60 minutes something else is happening. Ozone has gone to work immediately to lower/modulate inflammatory mediators.

It is the inflammation that causes pain. Knock out the inflammation & you knock out the pain. The oxygen residue is directly “what the doctor ordered” for oxygen starved tissues.

Hypoxic cells cannot regenerate or repair. They have just been given a free bolus of desperately needed oxygen into tissues where diffusion may be impaired.

Robert Rowen M.D.

Page 35: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

What about delayed side effects?• Usually there is some change with the injection,

helping you feel comfortable that you’ve chosen the correct site. But the real effect steps in about 2 But the real effect steps in about 2 to 5 days later. Why the delay? to 5 days later. Why the delay?

• I believe it’s a situation were the mere presence of ozone to modulate the inflammation is not enough for an instant effect. It requires several more days for the ATP induced by the new presence of oxygen to show up in the form of actual tissue healing and pain reduction.

Page 36: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Dr. Rowen’s success rates• Knees, neck, backs-approximate 80 - 85%

overall improvement.• Hips with a lateral approach about 50%

improvement or with anterior approach which some teach approximate 66% overall improvement.

• plantar fasciitis close to 100%

• Shoulders 50% clearing of frozen shoulder quickly may need 3 to 4 more treatments.

• ankle sprains - 80%

Page 37: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Prolozone VS Prolotherapy• Ozone being a gas, spreads quickly far and wide. So unlike

prolotherapy you don’t have to be spot on. The gas travels and seemingly everywhere it flows/touches, healing is enabled.

• Prolotherapy use requires 20/30 more needle sticks than prolozone.

• Prolotherapy can make the patient worse for the first 48 hours before benefits begin kicking in.

• Patients come in sometimes reluctant for prolotherapy because they know they might feel worse tomorrow.

• Precision injections required which taxes the individual physician

Page 38: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Dr. Rowen’s failures/pitfalls• No one ever gets 100%No one ever gets 100%• Some patients are slow to come around. It may

take 4 to 6 sessions to finally show improvement. Keep it up, they usually have improvement within the six sessions. Usually with continued improvement. If no improvement within six sessions, I will discontinue. The Cubans will go to 10.

• No need to hit the right area although, since the gas is very forgiving.

Page 39: Prolozone Therapy Workshop Dr. James Lemire FAAFP,CFMP October 22, 2015

Final Thoughts• Prolozone is easy to tolerate

• If it hurts, it only does so for about 60 seconds

• Faster results

• Better results

• Patients are eager to come back for more treatments if needed

• Help patients to avoid surgery where they are told: “There is bone on bone which requires joint replacement”
