HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYINGTHIS PROBLEM?

The problem is of child headed families (orphans)

The rate at which people are dying because of HIV/Aids, andthe requests for funeral assistance that keeps onescalating in my ward made me notice the increasing

number of orphans, child headed and widows/widowers.

Poor grade seven results at the school in my ward andgeneral reluctance of certain children to go to school due tolack of resources.

Request for assistance by the school headmaster andmembers of the community in my ward.

    IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?

Yes this issue is very important because if left unattended to it willfurther worsen their plight apart from being orphans , they will beuneducated, when they are not educated they can not be employed.

Skills training also requires some form of basic education. When a childdoes not have enough resources they tend to be mischievous and theirperformance in school is compromised.

When a society does not educate their children, it is like breeding asociety that depends on handouts for livelihood. Also social misfits arecreated from such negligence. The future of Norton as a community liesin our children and the kind of education we give them todaydetermines the kind of Norton we will have in future.

So as a lady councillor l was touched and I tried by all means to help

    some of the orphansPROJECTS

    SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION

This practice is sustainable and can be replicated by others. What needs to be done is to source for funding. Thecommunity needs to be encouraged to help the less fortunateamongst them.

Publishing/informing others of the plight of others also helpsto source for financial assistance.

Leading by example also helps, today as Councillor I haveused my own resources, the next day it will be someone else, individuals or coporates.

    LESSONS LEARNED

I have learned to network, seek assistance on behalf ofothers. That is the major reason why I am a Councillor tospeak on behalf of others and to source that which isrequired by our communities.

To be a ray of hope for the less privileged

To be a problem solver in the community

Education is a basic need for every human being,

depriving one of that basic need is amounts to abuse.
