Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit institu-tions of higher education, recognizes those students who distinguish themselves in scholarship, loyalty and service. The only honor society permitted to bear the name Jesuit, AΣN encourages its members to a life-time pursuit of intellectual development, deepening Ignatian spirituality, service to others, and a commit-ment to the core principles of Jesuit education.

Alpha Sigma Nu was founded in 1915 at Marquette University. The men’s honor society, known as Alpha Sigma Tau until 1930, spread from Marquette to Creighton University, to Saint Louis University, and to the University of Detroit in its first decade. In 1924, Gamma Pi Epsilon was founded to honor outstanding women. Alpha Sigma Nu and Gamma Pi Epsilon pursued separate but similar paths for almost 50 years, expanding nationally and cooperating on campuses where they existed together. The society born of their merger in 1973 is open to men and women at Chapters on all 28 Jesuit campuses in the United States, two in Canada, and one in South Korea. Some 2,000 mem-bers are inducted each year.

Alpha Sigma Nu Alumni Clubs encourage the 76,000+ members to be ‘leaders for life’ framed by the teachings of St. Ignatius Loyola and the academic vigor of their Jesuit education, honoring the commitment to the AΣN values. The Clubs organize service projects, hold career networking events, sponsor speaker events series, and coordinate ongoing formation experiences such as retreats, to name a few.

Alumni Club membership includes all Alpha Sigma Nu and Gamma Pi Epsilon alumni in the Club’s geographic area. Members are encouraged to keep the Central Office updated with current contact information to receive local Alumni Club event news. Find a Club near you:

Juniors, seniors, and students in graduate and professional schools who rank in the top 15 percent of their classes may be considered for membership. Each Chapter may nominate no more than four percent of the junior and senior classes from each school and college of a university. The method of selection varies from campus to campus but is always based on scholarship, loyalty, and service. Chapters may also induct honorary members, persons who are not students in the school but who display the outstanding qualities sought in Alpha Sigma Nu members.

Activities, which vary from Chapter to Chapter, are led by student officers and an Alpha Sigma Nu Faculty Adviser. Chapter programming features many events throughout the year which highlight the Society’s tenets and support the mission of Jesuit education, often through collaboration with other mission-focused organizations.

Selection to Alpha Sigma Nu is one of the highest honors awarded on a Jesuit campus and includes an expectation of lifelong pursuit of the AΣN and Jesuit ideals.

Scholarship is the most important qualification.• A depth of comprehension and breadth

of knowledge• A passion for knowledge, ideas, and critical analysis

Loyalty means an intellectual appreciation of Jesuit ideals and a commitment to these ideals on the intellectual, social, moral, and religious levels. • A deep sense of decency, truth, and justice• Efforts to advance the good of society

Service to others is an integral part of the philosophy of Jesuit education and of Alpha Sigma Nu. • Use one’s knowledge to contribute to the world • Reflects a concern for the local and global community

Alpha Sigma Nu

The name of Alpha Sigma Nu signifies the Greek words Adelphotes Skolastikon Nikephoron (company of honor students). The AΣN key bears the three Greek letters together with the eye of wisdom.
