Working Principle • The kit will be loaded with the
Sonar, Radar and it will be controlled by a RC controller.
• The kit will be able to Scan the vast areas of any kind of water
body in short duration of time.

Innovation and Research
• Research – Sonar signals need to be processed to extract image information – From the received sonar signals it is required to remove noise
and also tune the image processing algorithm as per the water properties
– The system has to adopt to various water bodies and help in identification of drowned body, its location and position
– The developed system need to adopt for various climatic conditions and lighting conditions (day/night vision)

Problem that is being Addressed • A total 3, 90,884 accidental deaths were reported in the country
during the year 2011. – A total of 6, 94,390 cases of Un-Natural Accidents have caused 3, 67,194
deaths and rendered 5, 06,348 people injured during 2011. – The major un-natural causes of accidental deaths were Road Accidents
(37.3%), Railway Accidents and Rail-Road Accidents (7.6%), Poisoning (8.0%), Drowning (8.1%), Sudden Deaths (7.3%) and Fire Accidents (6.7%).
– 29708 deaths have occurred during the year 2011 due to drowning (boat capsize).
• We propose a through water imaging equipment that can scan the water front in defined areas and generates images of the water bed indicating the location of drowned bodies. The system would have a display as well a local coordinate system to show the presence of human bodies and their positions. The system will be based on sonar imaging technology that can beam sonar signals which scans the water front in defined areas and automatically generates the images indicating the presence of drowned bodies.

Work Involved
• The proposed work consists of three major parts: 1. Development of sonar based radar unit for data
acquisition 2. Development of novel image processing algorithms for
drowned body detection 3. Development of novel image processing algorithms for
drowned body detection based on night vision data sensing

Market Potential and Commercialization • The proposed system will be designed and developed
as a prototype and will be used in demonstration of its capabilities as mentioned in the objectives.
• Technology transfer can be taken up with interested companies in commercializing the products. Many of the tourist spots, restaurants and water parks can buy this product and can be used as safety equipment.
• The developed product can be standardized and can be compulsorily made available for every village, taluk and districts.
• Rescue teams and disaster management teams can use the developed system for search and rescue operations. The system developed could lead to business opportunities.
