1. Educational contentProject 12 is the second project in the programme of study Logistics and Economics atRotterdam University of Applied Sciences and is part of the international learning line of the
curriculum and therefore in English. In this project students are trained in all aspects relatedto transport modes and transport planning.
1.1. The company
Khnle Logistics was founded in 1905 and is an international logistics service provider withover 25,000 employees at 450 locations in more than 100 countries. Khnle Logistics, headquartered in New York, has branch offices all over the world.
Khnle Logistics provides integrated, flexible logistics solutions to their customers. Theirend-to-end supply chain management capabilities include seafreight, airfreight, transport byrail, by road, storage, contract logistics and lead logistics. By means of partnerships withleading carriers Khnle Logistics is able to guarantee all seafreight capacities, as they haveguaranteed space with each shipping alliance. This way they can easily adapt to growingtrade volumes, which is a key benefit when it comes to managing global supply chains.
1.2. Khnle Logist ics Europe
The European headquarters are situated in Rotterdam. It is Khnle Logistics mission to offertheir customers a one-stop-shop concept. In addition to storage and distribution they alsotake care of the required documents for physical distribution and customs clearance. In orderto do this, Khnle Logistics Europe offers a wide range of services:
- Storage of goods in their distribution centres (all bonded warehouses)
- Distribution/transport of goods by deep sea, short sea, air, road, inland waterways
(barging) and rail- Providing all necessary transport documentation- Advice on storage, distribution and insurance- Customs activities
1.3 DC in Dist ripark Eemhaven
Khnle Logistics distribution centre is situated in Distripark Eemshaven (WillemBarentzstraat 11-19 3165 AA Rotterdam-Albrandswaard). Terminals and transport modesare all nearby. Furthermore, the very latest information and communication technology is at
hand. Companies at the Distriparks offer a wide variety of services which may include asignificant level of added value. These value-added services comprise storage, repackaging, labelling, assembling and stripping and stuffing of containers.
Distripark Eemhaven is 65 hectares/161 acres and has a storage capacity of 49.42108acres. There is a good connection with the container terminals of ECT Home, RotterdamShort Sea terminals, the Rail Service Centre and Hanno/Uniport, with an annual throughputof over 2.5 million TEU. There is also a connection with the European hinterland by meansof motorway A15, an inland waterway and short sea terminal, and there are severalstevedores. Business park Waalhaven Zuid is just a stones throw away from DistriparkEemhaven. Several logistics service providers are situated here, such as Maersk Logistics,Nippon Express, Menlo Logistics, Geodis Vitesse, Hudig & Veder, VAT logistics,
Eurofrigo/Nicherei, Prologis, Mitsui Soko, TPV and of course Khnle Logistics.

The rented DC in Eemhaven is a low rise-building of 32.81 ft high (10m), with traditionalpallet racks fit for Europallets. The DC has a capacity of 6,000 pallet places and all requiredtransport equipment, such as lift trucks, is available.Khnle Logistics distribution centre in Eemhaven is a bonded warehouse, as are the otherEuropean DCs in Antwerp (Port number 725 - Scheldelaan 610, 2040 Antwerp), Hamburg(Beim Schrderschen Hof 7, Hamburg), Bremen (Neustdter Hafen Terminal 21, Senator-Borttscheller-Strae 1, 28197 Bremen) and Le Havre (12 Quai Lamand, 76600 Havre).
1.4 The situation
Khnle Logistics Europe has received a Request for Quotation (see appendix 1) from anAmerican electronics manufacturer, called Electroparts, which is a relatively new company.Electroparts produces electrical parts for car manufacturers all over the world. Their productrange includes spark plugs, ignition timers, starter motors, automatic transmission units, wires, ignitions, car fuses, alternators, receptacles, lighting units and other electricallycoupled parts. Electroparts has been so successful that they are expanding all over Europe.
Recently Electroparts has signed new sales contracts with a number of car manufacturers inEurope to supply car wires: BMW in Germany, Fiat in Italy, Nissan in the UK, Vauxhall in theUK, General Motors in the UK and Peugeot in Paris (Terms of Delivery: CIP). In the futurethey hope to find even more European customers and sell more products.
As Electroparts does not have any trucks or other transport means themselves, they need tooutsource logistics to a logistics service provider / freight forwarder. Therefore they areseeking a logistics service provider to take care of transport, storage and delivery of theirproducts. To be able to compare the prices and services of the logistics service providers, they have sent Requests For Quotation (RFQs) to a number of forwarders, among whichKhnle Logistics.
Most of the products can be delivered directly to the customers (direct route), but when theamount varies every week or month (delivery on demand) the pallets need to be stored in aEuropean depot (indirect route) before they are delivered to the customer.

1.5 The assignmentResearch on routeYou are an intern (stagiaire) at Khnle Logistics. The Sales Manager has received therequest for quotation (see appendix 1), but as this is a new route, he cannot make thequotation (offerte) yet before some research has been done on a number of criteria, such astransport modes, costs and sustainability. He has therefore asked you to do research on thisnew route and compare all parts of the route on possible transport modes, and per transportmode the transit-time, the price and the degree of sustainability. With this information thesales department can make a quotation, which can be sent to Electroparts. You are free toadd any other research criteria/parameters in modal choice. From all the interns who areworking on this assignment, the sales manager will choose the completest, the best andmost convincing best route as input for the quotation.
Cost overviewOn the basis of your research two scenarios must be compared on price, e.g. the cheapest
route and the fastest route (by deep sea shipping). A detailed costs overview must be givenper month and per year (annual costs) and the costs per TEU must be calculated.
Advice rush ordersElectroparts has also asked to give advice about rush orders (by airfreight). What are thecosts for the total amount of containers and what is the price per TEU? What is the transittime by air to all final destinations? Compare this price to the cheapest deep sea shippingroute.
StorageThe price for storage in the European DCs is known by the sales manager, so this does nothave to be researched by your project group.
Legal mattersIn the RFQ advice has also been asked about legal matters (incoterms, risk, liability, bondedwarehouses, and the required transport documents).
Transport planningIf Electroparts approves and signs Khnles quotation, the quotation will become an order, which will be sent to the planning departments (road, rail, sea, air), where a detailedplanning will have to be made. In order to assist these departments as well, they also wantyou to make a detailed transport planning / time table of your best route. With this planningthe planning department should be able to carry out the entire operation (so make sure thatit is complete, detailed and that no parts are missing!).
The transport planning should be based on real time schedules of the transport companies,so list the names of the carriers / operators / empty container depots / ports/ terminals /stevedores, give exact addresses and postal codes. All details in every transport movementmust be described and every second in the planning must be accounted for. Dates must belisted, as well as departure and arrival times, transit times, the number and types ofcontainers, number of trucks needed, loading schedule at factory (based on 4 dock shelters),distances to rail and the relevant ports, cut-off and available times of rail or port terminal(and opening hours), which rail operator, which port in US and why, which ship (name), [forindirect route: storage in which DC in Europe and why] delivery at factories, return emptycontainers, demurrage etc.).
The first deliveries take place as of 1 February 2015. This means that you will have to startloading weeks in advance (calculate backwards).

2.2 Supervision
Important general information about working in projects can be found in the documentAlgemene Projectrichtlijnen LE on N@tschool (only available in Dutch).
Lecturers rolesThe project groups are composed by the coordinator of this project. The lecturers in thisproject perform the role of supervisor, who guides the project groups. Simultaneously theyare also Client (opdrachtgever), which means that during the final assessment, they play therole of Sales Manager of Khnle Logistics, asking you to clarify your research. Supervisorscan also take on the role of expert, so they can also answer questions related to thecontents. In case of additional questions or organisational matters that cannot be answeredby your supervisor, please send an email to the coordinator of the project.
In addition to the supervisor, a peer coach will be assigned to each group. The project groupcan ask the peer coach for assistance/feedback max. 3 times. Furthermore, peer coaches
organize a number of meetings in which support and advice can be given to the projectgroup. The role of the peer coaches is additional to the supervisors role. Peer coaches arenot allowed to give Project Action Plans or Reports to their group.
JustificationThe project has originally been developed by Mr F. van Poelgeest with the input and quotesfrom Khne Nagel. Later revisions in the English version by J.P. van Hoeve have been doneon the basis of input from Sebastiaan van den Brom (International Forwarding AgentBasamro), Mr P.D. Roeleveld of RailCargo Netherlands and DSV. New quotes are addedregularly, but as quotes are usually only valid for a limited period of time, they should beconsidered as a good indication, rather than 100% accurate.
2.3 Project group roles
Each group has a project leader, who is in charge of this project. A project leader isaccountable for the planning (according to the Project Action Plan), delegates tasks, monitors progress and takes final decisions. As a chairman you conduct the meetings, youmake the agenda and check all outgoing documents. Moreover, you check the minutesbefore putting them on N@tschool. In case of emergencies the project leader contacts thesupervisor to discuss the matter at hand. One of you is the secretarytaking the minutes and one person is the archivist, taking careof saving all the documents in a structured way. Others are active group members.
During the meetings the students discuss the tasks, the quality of the products, theperformance of the individual group members and the planning for the next time. Warnings(yellow cards) and dismissal from the group (red card) are initiated by the studentsthemselves and recorded in the minutes. The group (not the supervisor) is responsible forthe quality of the products, so students are requested to be pro-active and initiate questionsto the supervisor.

4. Products
4.1 Project Action Plan
For this project first a Project Action Plan has to be made. The Project Action plan is the
planning according to which this project will be carried out and should therefore be completeand very detailed.
First structure the route and divide into subparts (e.g. Factory-coast USA, USA-Europe etc.).Then go into more detail (pick up empty containers loading schedule at factory transportto coast etc.). and list which information should be gathered by means of questions andsubquestions (the more detail, the better, a few pages of questions covering your entireresearch is quite normal in this project!), which sources you are going to use to find yourinformation and who is going to do what (question source responsible).Try to be asdetailed as possible in your questions to be able to derive enough input for your researchand your final documents.
Part of the Project Action Plan is the cooperation contract in which you write down thecontact details and which agreements are made about the cooperation. What do groupmembers expect from each other concerning attendance, work attitude, quality of thedocuments, who to inform in case of illness and what measures are taken if a student doesnot obey the rules? The format can be found on N@tschool.
4.2. Final Report
In the final report you research all parts of the route on possible transport modes, the transittime per transport mode, the price and the sustainability (see assessment form in the
appendices).
In each chapter of your report another part of the route is researched and described in detail,e.g. pick-up empty containers, loading schedule at factory, factory to port, port USA to portEurope etc. The operators and carriers are listed and compared, the ports that can bechosen must be compared on distance and connection to the ports, and the connectionswithin the port are described. Maps, sailing schedules and rail schedules are given, costsare calculated and compared. Do not forget any surcharges and make sure the informationis well-substantiated by mentioning your sources. Each chapter ends with a conclusionabout this trajectory / part of the route in which the cheapest, fastest shipping route, and themost sustainable option is described and compared.
In addition to this you give advice on how to take care of incidental rush orders (price andtransit time). Also the required transport document must be listed and an example given inthe appendices.
In the last chapter you give a scenario analysis of two routes, e.g. the cheapest and thefastest route by deep sea shipping/or the most sustainable route. You give a cost overview(per week and year and per TEU) and the total transit time of each of them.
In the Conclusion and Recommendations you explain which route is best and why. Moreover, you give a detailed Transport Planning of the best route according to your group. The Transport Planning of the best route should be given in detail, accounting for everyminute from pick-up (how many containers, which type, which empty depot, which trucking
company, how many trucks, loading at factory etc.) to delivery, including exact dates, addresses, postal codes, distances, cut-off and available times, which transport mode,

trucking companies, shipping companies, rail operators, stevedores, which documents, which DC, insurance and so on.
The format of the report can be found on N@tschool. The maximum size is 30 pages(without appendices). The report will be assessed on both content and English.
4.3. Presentation and defence
In week 9 the defence takes place as follows. The sales manager and one of the salesrepresentatives of Khnle Logistics invite two groups at the same time to explain and defendtheir report. You both give a 10 minutes presentation about the recommended route, afterwhich you ask each other critical questions about each others recommended route. Thesales manager will use the report of the winning group to make the proposal/quotation tothe customer. It goes without saying that this group gets the highest mark.

All documents, agendas, minutes, Project Action Plan, concept and final report, should beput on N@tschool on Friday before the actual meeting with the supervisor takes place.Additional agreements can be made with the individual supervisor. e.g. some also prefer toreceive the documents by email. Documents that are handed in late will not be assessed.
4.8. Complaints
For the School of Built Environment (IGO) the complaints regulations apply. Thesecomplaints regulations are laid down in the appendix of the study guide. If there is a complaint about a test or an exam, the student should first discuss this with thelecturer in charge, the coordinator of the project or the educational manager. If this meetingdoes not lead to a solution, then there is a possibility to appeal to the Examinations Board
IBB (see article 3 of the complaints regulations). The complaint should be addressed to thechairman of the examinations board and be submitted at IBB front office.
