EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Learning Support Center of Student Affairs has organized English Communication Skill
Development Program with the name “English for ALL by Albert Laurence” (E4ALL) for 8 years
with free of charge. The objective of the program is to develop AU Freshmen’s confidence in
English communication and to promote a concept of self-directed learning through 7 Steps to
English Proficiency initiated by Rector Magnificus of Assumption University, Rev.Bro.Dr.Bancha
Saenghiran. The program is offered to through practicing of English conversation, reading
comprehension, pronunciation, public speaking, creative writing and news reading with the real
studio experience. Updated schedule, news, upcoming events and gallery were uploaded to the
website of www.e4all.au.edu.
There were 206 students registered to the program in 2016 with 39 trainers and 2 teachers.
173 Students from 206 students or 84% have successfully passed the requirement of the program.
There was an orientation (First Gathering) for new members on August 17th, 2016 to mark the
opening of the annual program, and was remarked the opening by Rector Magnificus. Number of
teachers in the program were reduced from 3 to 2 persons, due to the reassignment of 1 personnel
from Learning Support Center to Center for Student Leadership and Experiential Learning. Thus
the center emphasized on training the trainers by increasing the number of workshops for trainers
from 3 hours to 6 hours. There were 2 workshops for trainers on August 18th and 19th of 2016 (3
hours each). The objective of training the trainers’ workshop is to prepare new trainers to
understand the concept of the program and to develop skills to be able to lead activities in classes.
Due to the higher student’s demand to improve writing skill from student need survey, we
have added “Creative Writing Workshop” module to the lesson plan. Student’s Level of
Satisfaction towards course curriculum was 4.21 of 5-point-scale and Student’s Level of
Satisfaction towards facilitators/teachers was 4.26. Overall Student’s Level of Satisfaction
towards 4 skill improvement was 4.12. Top 5 skill improvement in the program were Confidence
in Classroom Presentation, Public Speaking, Essay Writing, English Pronunciation and Writing
with correct English Grammar, respectively. In 2016, Rector Magnificus has launched a new
version of 7 steps to English proficiency with a new guideline of how to use Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) to improve English skills. We will include activities related to
the usage of ICT to the program’s curriculum next academic year.

PROJECT RESULTS AND PERFORMANCE
1. Introduction and Overview
Learning Support Center of Student Affairs has organized English Communication Skill
Development Program with the name “English for ALL by Albert Laurence” (E4ALL) for 8 years

The program is offered to freshmen for the entire 7 weeks of innovative and creative games
and activities through practicing of English conversation, reading comprehension, pronunciation,
public speaking, creative writing and news reading with the real studio experience.

1. To enhance English Communication Skills and to promote English speaking environment
for Assumption University students with free of charge.
2. To encourage students to practice reading, listening, speaking and writing through activities
based on the 7 steps to English Proficiency by Rev. Bro. Bancha Saenghiran.
3. To develop student’s confidence in communication for English speaking community.

4. Project Performance
1. 206 students have registered to the program with 39 trainers and 2 teachers
2. Total Teaching hours: 12 Sections x 3 hours x 7 times = 252 hours
3. 173 Students from 206 students or 84% of participants have successfully passed the
requirement of the program.
4. An average of student’s confidence in English Communication before joining the program
was 4.26 /10. And the average of Level of Need to improve English Communication skill
was 9.01 /10
5. A Survey on Need Assessment has been done with 540 freshmen who were interested in
English Skill development before joining the English for ALL program in 2016. The main
purpose of the survey is to have an overall information to design the suitable curriculum for
our members of that year. The result of the survey shows that respondents would like to
improve the following skills with the following numbers: Speaking skill = 306 students,
Writing skill = 141 students, Listening skill = 53 students, and Reading skill = 40 students

NEED SURVEY TO IMPROVE ENGLISH COMMUNICATION
6. Due to the high demand to improve writing skill, we have added “Creative Writing
Workshop” module to the lesson plan in Week no.6 of English for ALL 2016. Seven
Weeks modules included the following contents:
Week 1: Getting to know members to build up confidence and Introduction to 7 steps to
English Proficiency initiated by Rev.Bro.Dr.Bancha Saenghiran. Rector
Magnificus.
Week 2: Listening Comprehension and Conversation practice.
Week 3: Phonetics Symbols, Pronunciation and Word Stress/ Sentence Stress
Week 4: Reading Aloud Practice with trainers as student coaches
Week 5: Career Planning by Career Development Center. We have invited A.
Sunia Borribanbureephand and A.Supavadee Vongthumma, career
Counselors from Career Development Center, to be guests speakers for
student self-assessment by MBTI (Myer’s Briggs Typed Inventory) in
personality traits and to plan a future career.
Week 6: Creative Writing Workshop.
Week 7: Studio Experience. Students were doing their final projects at the studio.
Students were asked to read news and video recorded by the studio to reflect

their own performances. If their performance of the final project reaches 70%
with another 70% of the attendance, they will successfully passed the program
with a certificate of achievement.

Overview
1. Student’s Level of Satisfaction towards course curriculum = 4.21 of 5-point-scale
2. Student’s Level of Satisfaction towards facilitators/teachers = 4.26 of 5-point-scale
3. Student’s Level of Satisfaction towards skill improvement in Listening = 4.31,
Speaking 4.14, Reading = 4.21, Writing = 3.83 and Overall = 4.12 of 5-point-scale.
4. There is a significant development of Student Confidence in English Language Usage
after the program at 0.01 point
5. Students in the English for ALL program has passed the regular English courses to
another level with the following statistics: Basic English (Passed 74, Failed 2) and
English I (Passed 82, Failed 0)
6. Top 5 skill improvement in the program were Confidence in Classroom Presentation,
Public Speaking, Essay Writing, English Pronunciation and Writing with correct
English Grammar, respectively.

Support Center, Student Affairs. The purpose of the assessment is to study the relationship

Follow up process
After the program of the First semester, the team has reviewed their English course
grades as reference to follow their performance in English proficiency. Students who have
failed in English course will be called back for an interview and further intervention. In 2016,
156 English for ALL students, out of 158 members, has passed regular English courses. Their
grades are shown as follows:

7. Recommendations and Suggestions
At the end of Academic year 2016, Rector Magnificus has launched a new version of 7 steps to English proficiency with a new guideline of how to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to improve English skills.
