About Worcester Polytechnic InstituteFounded in 1865, WPI was one of the nation’s firstengineering and science universities. Today, it is anational university with 14 academic departmentsoffering more than 50 undergraduate and graduatedegree programs in science, engineering, technology, business, the social sciences, and the humanities andarts. Those offerings in clude interdisciplinary majorsin interactive media and game development, envi-ronmental engineering, and robotics engineering(the nation’s first BS degree program in that field)

WPI places a high premium on excellence inundergraduate education, with strong student-facultyinteraction and a unique approach to active, collab-orative learning through a project-enriched curricu-lum. Through the university’s innovative GlobalPerspective Program, students have the opportunityto make a difference in communities and organiza-tions around the world by applying science andtechnology to help solve critical social and culturalproblems. About two thirds of undergraduates traveloff campus to complete professional level projects, working at 26 project centers on five continents.

WPI awarded its first advanced degree in 1898.Today most of its academic departments offer grad-uate programs that can be pursued on a full- or part- time basis. WPI’s world-class faculty work with students in a number of cutting-edge research areas, leading to breakthroughs and innovations in suchfields as bioengineering, energy, information securi-ty, materials processing, and the learning sciences.

WPI alumni have been responsible for a numberof world-changing innovations, among them theliquid-fueled rocket, the airbag safety system, andthe Segway Human Transporter.

About Project Presentation DayOnce a year, WPI students take time out from theirstudies to present to their faculty advisors and spon-sors the results of their Major Qualifying Projects,or MQPs (one of two significant academic projectsall WPI students complete). The MQP is a profes-sional-level design or research experience generallycompleted in teams and often sponsored by corpo-rations or other external organizations. The projectsmirror the kinds of professional work students willtackle in their careers.

The project experience prepares students tolead team efforts, to communicate professionally, to meet deadlines and exceed expectations, to dealwith ambiguity and unexpected difficulties, and toconsider not just the technical, but the ethical andsocial dimensions of their work. The projects mustbe thoroughly documented in written reports, andvirtually all teams make oral presentations of theirresults. These are the presentations you will seetoday.

Not infrequently, Major Qualifying Projectslead to publications in peer-reviewed journals, pre-sentations at regional and national conferences, andpatents. Some become the foundations for entrepre-neurial ventures. Others become useful innovationsand products for their corporate sponsors. But nomatter what becomes of an MQP, the chances are it has already served as an effective capstone to aWPI education and a profound steppingstone to asuccessful and rewarding career and life.
