Communication
In the past ten
years Snaga has
successfully
educated citizens
on how to recycle
everyday items.
Make an impact on
the behaviour and
values of citizens in
the direction of
adopting the
philosophy of reuse
and waste prevention
in their everyday life.
I
In 2013 Snaga
decides to move up
the waste hierarchy
from recycling
to actively promoting
reuse and waste
prevention.
Because we have
power
and
because we have
responsibility.
Inspire people to take
independant actions.
CSR campaign
Get Used To Reuse
Addressing citizens
with the help of the
music, a video
manifesto,
workshops and
urban interventions.
Encourage a sustainable attitude towards
things, taking rational shopping decisions
and giving value to all those things that
money cannot buy.
CSR campaign
Raise Your Voice Against
Food Waste
Addressing
citizens with the
help of the
music
Snaga is encouraging citizens to reduce
the amount of waste they produce,
promoting reduction, reuse and
responsible consumption.
Addressing people reusing the song
“Let‘s fly” (recorded in 1978).
Food waste: our aim is to
change the relation and
perception of food so that it
will again become an
important value and thus
reduce food waste.
A different approach
The initiative addresses
the problem of food
waste by giving voice to
dustbins.
Dustbins protesting in the city centre,
in parks, in all Ljubljana‘s markets,
at local community events …
CSR campaign
Responsible and ethical
consumerism
In Ljubljana we play a vital role in helping achieve sustainable society and more responsible consumerism.
GOOD PRACTICE EXAMPLE
Hygienic paper made of multilayered
cardboard packaging – circuit of closing
material flows
The Municipality can provide sources for the amount of hygienic paper it needs. This results in economical and environmental savings according to the principle of the Zero Waste strategy.
In the next three years in JHL and other public enterprises, 7,5 million pieces of liter packaging (532 m3 packaging waste) will be recycled beacuse of sustainable hygienic paper usage. 6.920 m2 of forrest or 1.661 trees will be kept from logging. 196 tons of CO2 emissions will be reduced. The 25% financial saving at Snaga Ljubljana is achieved by purchasing this type of hygienic paper.
GOOD PRACTICE EXAMPLE
Center of Re-use and Repair
Cafe (Povšetova street 4)
The center consists of a shop, sweing room and workshop. In just two years, the number of sold items increased from 50 to 140 per day. The center opened in 2013 and presented jobs for less employable people.
Repair Cafe operates withing the Center of Re-use and makes proffessionals, such as electrician or carpenter availavle for helping with repairing and transformation of the itmes.
GOOD PRACTICE EXAMPLE
Snaga’s House of Re-use in children’s
creative city Minicity
Children get to
know re-use,
trading, sharing
and responsibility
with food the
exciting way.
GOOD PRACTICE EXAMPLE
Snaga’s users recieve a publication
every year. In 2016 it was entitled
“Snagazin – a magazine for a better
lifestyle”.
The publication
was designed as
a magazine,
where the main
interest appeared
to be the people
and not waste
management.
Those, who buy,
use and dispose
on one side and
those, who sew
cheap clothes,
extract toxic
metal and
produce cocoa,
rice and coffee in
slavery.
GOOD PRACTICE EXAMPLE
Making paper from Japanese knotweed on
semi-industrial level; the joint project by the
Municipality of Ljubljana, Snaga, RE-
GENERACIJA association, Botanical Garden
of the University of Ljubljana and Institute of
Pulp and Paper.
In 2016, five partners from different fields and sectors teamed up to re-use. One of the first practices of making paper from Japanese knotweed was realised in Ljubljana on semi-industrial level.
Snaga used this paper with the english version of Snagazin.
GOOD EXAMPLE PRACTICE
Upcycled furniture and equipment in the
administrative building of RCERO
Ljubljana.
In the waste
management facility of
RCERO, Snaga
creatively re-used,
upcycled and recycled
items that form the
interior. The life span
of the equipment is
prolonged and the
sustainability is
achieved.
The Trash Design team sharpened more than 500 board pallets, refurbished 16 chairs, 7 table lamps, 20 metal wheel rims, 5 bathtubs, a closet, 8 drawers adn 4 casks. 100 beer and wine bottles, 400 paper tubes and 70 meters of wooden beams were given a new life.
CHALLENGES AND PLANS
The use of compost, produced in RCERO
Ljubljana on agricultural lands around the
city.
In the facility of RCERO Ljubljana, more than 20 thousand tons of biological waste is processed annualy. During the treatment process from separately collected biological waste, compost of the highest value is produced.
By using the superior technology in RCERO Ljubljana, we achieved the highest possible quality of the produced compost, which can be used on agricultural lands.
CHALLENGES AND PLANS
Manufacturing scented candles from waste
oil. The strategy for making funerary candles
is being framed as well.
Paraffine candles: • Paraffine does not exist in natural form and is
not renewable. • It is obtained by dry destilation of brown coal
and oil derivates • Paraffine candles produce toxines by burning,
most of which are carcinogenic • The sooting ends up deep within the lungs • Candles, made from bee and vegetable wax are
expensive, but environmental-friendly. They also interfere with the food chain
Two environmental issues …
Waste oil: • Housholds mostly drain the waste oil • Risking the clogging and contamination of the
surface and ground water • 1 liter of waste oil can contaminate 1000 liters of
water • There is no treatment for this type of waste in
Slovenia, collected quanitites are transported abroad
… one effective solution.
Scented candles made of waste oil: • Vegetable origin • Made from local renewable resources • Don’t interfere with the food chain • CO2 neutral • Health and environment-friendly • Burning with lower temperature and last 30%
longer • Contain regulated synthetic scent components • Handmade by people with mental health illness
Do-it-yourself (DIY) candle from waste oil production kit: • Most eco way of recycling this type of waste –
avoids transport, energy, chemicals, otherwise necessary for industrial production
• Solves the clogged drain issue and reduces water treatment plant workload
• Savings – candle purchasing is no longer necessary
• Easy and fun to use
Health and environment-friendly vegetable candles made of waste oil
CHALLENGES AND PLANS
Opening of an alternative shopping center in
the center of Ljubljana.
»Alternative shopping center« would
enable a sustainable consumption
experience: A first slovenian store
without packaging, a rental service
and a multipurpose cafe with local and
fair trade offer, events.
The project would combine
sustainable approach to waste and
resource management, change
consumtion patterns and lifestyle,
allow economical, environmental
socially useful services in one
place, it would encourage creativity,
gender equality and green jobs.
A fourth unit could
be added – a small
hotel
(Bed&Breakfast)
that would be
consistent with Zero
Waste strategy. The
equioment would be
recycled and
artisticly upgraded.
Bed linen, towels
and the res would
be fair traded.
CHALLENGES AND PLANS
Build and open „Creapolis”,
Creating a better place
CREAPOLIS
• The collection center with warehouse for „waste“ for RE-USE, repair, up-cycling…
• Second hand shop with upcycled goods and occasional open air market
Conceptual design • Repair shops for furniture, electronic equipment, bikes, clothes
• Rental shop with used items • Educational part (Academy
for sustainable citizens, thematic courses, workshops, etc.)
• Meeting point at coffee bar served only local food and food from fair trade.
